Oh. my. god. is :thunderbird: #Thunderbird's calendar broken. It keeps asking for passwords. And of course doesn't tell for which calendar 🤪. Apparently the only thing it can do is associate a base (!) url (not the full calendar url, no no no) to ONE user/password combination. You have a server with multiple accounts of which you want to access the calendars? No. You put the user@... into the url? Same shit. Something must have changed recently. It was always sketchy, but this is unworkable.

Except when you have some mismatch of channel names or other weirdness going on that updating the channel doesn't land in your nixos-rebuild 🤷

:nixos: #NixOS has made me like :bash: #bash. I use it so frequently with pkgs.writeShellApplication and have accepted to use its non-POSIX "advanced" features like (associative) arrays, the [[ ]] conditional syntax, the variable string mangling magic, etc. I absolutely love how writeShellApplication automatically runs everything through #shellCheck and makes it easy to set runtimeInputs and runtimeEnv. I'd love for it to pass the result through #shfmt though 😉

Today I've been fighting again with this absolutely stupid :nixos: #NixOS bug that dates back nearly 20 years now, which prevents you from naming an executable 'log'. Yes, it is NOT possible on NixOS. 🤦 🤦 🤦 And working around it is beyond frustrating. Fixing it requires a mass rebuild, so it's not that simple. 😩 😂 It's so terrible but also hilarious...

Issue: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/354057

Initial forum post: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/354057

Sometimes you wonder why git thinks the tree is dirty, especially with unlocked files. But if you keep them locked I guess you won't have problems.

My general rule is: If you *can* use a normal git repo, do it. This is what works best and is most versatile. However:

- your TV player might not like symlinks (need unlock then)
- git will refuse to update the tree if for some reason the tree on the remote gets dirty. Even with receive.denyCurrentBranch=updateInstead. This is annoying and caused me to use exports. Exports can also track old versions now.

Then you can just `git annex dead theDupeRemote` and if you want to be extra sure run `git annex fsck --from theRightRemote` (or before, never hurts). Then `git remote remove theDupeRemote` to never see it again (except when it was type=git autoenable=true 😉)

Or as you said, get everything from the dupe one, then dead it.

My strategy would be:

- upload everything to immich (with immich-cli e.g.)
- set up storage template for a nicer folder structure
- add immich storage as special remote with importtree=yes and import from it
- rinse repeat?

Not very elegant though

I have joined the #Immich cult and I am *very* impressed. :nixos: #NixOS made setup a breeze and it slurped 100GB of photos and videos like a champ while staying responsive. Facial recognition is amazing, a bit of manual merging and tagging is necessary, but that's expected. Also the keyword search works nicely - without you ever setting any 😁

For a workgroup that just wants to dump photos and search/tag later, I figured a single shared account works best.

He means put the tags into separate files. Use only a single player that by accident reads this one format. Not what you want.

If you really want the tags to be INSIDE the mp3 files, then the only thing you can do is retag and re-add. It would be cool if you could make a smudge filter that takes git-annex metadata (you'd put your tags there) and on the fly adds those to the mp3 upon checkout. #eMail #selfHosting gurus: I am looking for the simplest possible way to host myself a mailbox I can add to my email clients (Thunderbird, phone, etc.) as usual, so I can move mails there to free up space on the 3rd party "real" emails, then back them up separately on my server.

I do not want receiving or sending emails to work. Just an IMAP or whatever box I can shove emails in the face by dragging them in Thunderbird or with a script.

Ideally available in :nixos: #NixOS

#dovecot? 🤔

Many years I have tried building systems that allow me to declare #Thunar custom actions (contex menu entries), as those *really* don't want you to do that unfortunately.

From merging complex templates into the user config (1-2&image) to diving deeper with an entire #Python plugin system (3) I think the best solution is now #nix/#homeManager 🏠. Here (4) is my current approach.

(4) https://gitlab.com/nobodyinperson/nixconfig/-/commit/b11692719a595da1ab7b9ef994117d02c778029f
(1) https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=11647
(2) https://gitlab.com/nobodyinperson/thunar-custom-actions
(3) https://gitlab.com/nobodyinperson/thunar-plugins

#xfce

Still kinda many hours, but considering I'll reduce maintenance time drastically with this new system compared to the ever-breaking imperative distros, I consider it worth it.

:nixos: #nix and #NixOS do HaaS: Hard-coding as a Service.

You tell it what you want your system to look like and it hard-codes the sh*t out of it.

This comes with all the benefits of hard-coding: Your environment, your PATH, manually installed software, etc. don't interfere with your base system at all. Every program and service sees exactly the dependencies and configurations they were given. The amount of power this gives for servers/embedded/purpose-built machines cannot be overstated!

First time I managed to f*ck up :nixos: #NixOS so badly that I couldn't do anything anymore. But it sure feels that way. If I do nix-shell -p datalad, no build&test, but might just be because this one was cached locally. I wish there was a --explain flag that concisely runs down why exactly something is built.

How does one specify the private host ssh key with :nixos: #NixOS?

- putting in nix store is no-go (publicly readable for all users)
- secret management tools like agenix (and sops-nix?) have a bootstrapping problem: they themselves need the secret ssh host key to decrypt all the secrets.

So how does one then bring up a VM or a new fresh installation? How to specify the user passwordfiles then? This was a major roadbump during my last NixOS install on my laptop.

They wouldn't do this if it didn't make them more money. Probably this is an A/B test where they want to find out what keeps users watching longer. Language barriers keep people from watching videos and as long as they don't lose more views from annoyed users like us than they gain views from people who didn't understand the language before, they'll keep it.

Both equally unhelpful.

I think you can get nix to interpret a path as absolute to that one repo and not put it into the nix store, but that is very dirty.

Someone mentioned it working when the tree is dirty. Also doesn't feel right.

I want annexed files to work the same as any other file. I'm fine with making sure they are present manually, I mostly `git annex assist` anyway to commit and sync. Having to use a fetcher to fetch a file that's present right there just feels wrong.
