Zendrolion’s Mystara 3,000 to 2,200 BC

The fifth and final map in Simone’s Blackmoor ethnographic series looked vastly different from the previous four. The reason for this was simple: while the others were precataclysmic maps, this one concentrated on the post-Great Rain of Fire world. As a result, the base map changed completely. Simone continued to use one of Michele Carpita’s maps as a base, but now it was his familiar Brun and Alphatia map. On its edges it included parts of Skothar and Davania, thus making it the perfect choice.
Increased resolution plus a higher zoom factor meant that the different colour-coded populations could be directly labelled, so there was no key this time. There was also no title, which is rare for Simone’s maps.
Perhaps thanks to our familiarity with these land shapes, this map comes off as being far easier to read than the precataclysmic maps. It was a step closer to the modern day of Mystara, and the beginnings of some modern cultures could be seen. The Known World area was particularly interesting, as it showed the expanded coasts before regional cataclysms and subsidence sunk most of the southwestern coastline.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (February 2008)
Mystara 3,000 to 2,200 BC, by Simone Neri, February 2008
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Mystara 3,850 to 3,000 BC

This was the fourth map in Simone’s mostly unpublished series of five historical Blackmoor maps. It was also the only one he seems to have published online; he referenced it in a thread at The Piazza in 2010 about the location of Blackmoor. In his post there, which was on the rather complex and elusive subject of Blackmoor’s position in the world, he wrote:
So, in short, there is not any Blackmoor on Brun “as per ‘Italian’ map”, as larry puts it; according to LoZompatore, and I agree with him, Blackmoor (the empire’s core, and the city) was on Skothar. Then the empire expanded and conquered and colonized lands on Brun, establishing Dragonwatch Keep (from Dragonlord Trilogy, at the now-northern tip of the Endworld Line), the city of Urzud (likely an advanced outpost for the crusaders going to fight the Beastmen), and perhaps other communities. I’d rather exclude the ruined city in Fenhold’s swamp (from CM9), just becouse it’d seat under the arctic icecap before BC 3,000, and also becouse its Blackmoorian origins are given by CM9 as a possibility, not as a fact.
We can see Simone’s conception of Blackmoor very well in this map, with it situated in what would be northern Skothar in the modern world, with colonies or territories stretching into what would be northern Brun in the modern world.
Note that I have two versions of this map. The first below is the one that Simone sent me with the others in the set, while the second below is the original map from the thread at The Piazza. There were two main differences between these maps: the size of the Yannifey area (3 on the maps) and the presence of an elven colony in the Sylvan Realm, in what would later be northwestern Brun. I can’t tell which version was newer conclusively, though I have marked the version with the Sylvan Realm colony as the newer version.
Fan-made Maps by Simone Neri (February 2008)
Mystara 3,850 to 3,000 BC, by Simone Neri, February 2008
Mystara 3,850 to 3,000 BC, by Simone Neri, February 2008 (likely older version)
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. By the end date of this map, it was well into its ascendancy, though at this stage it was still a small nation among many larger rivals.
The period depicted here is so ancient that many of the names in the key are only vaguely related to 1,000 AC Mystara. Zendrolion’s Mystara 8,500 to 5,500 BC

This was the second map in a series of five that Simone created in 2008. For a little more on this series, see the post for the first map, Mystara 50,000 to 8,500 BC. As with the other maps, the labels were all in Italian. This map’s title was “L’alba dei popoli”, which (according to Google) translates to something like “The dawn of the peoples” or “The dawn of nations”.
As with the first map, it again mixes old Mystara names with old Blackmoor names, knitting them together into the prehistory. 5,500 BC is still before the rise of Blackmoor itself — which would be the subject of the next map.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (February 2008)
Mystara 8,500 to 5,500 BC, by Simone Neri, February 2008
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Mystara 50,000 to 8,500 BC

Simone shared a map called “Mystara_04_BC3850-3000.png” in August 2010 on The Piazza. Clearly it was part of a series, but as far as I have been able to find, he never posted the other parts online. When I asked him about it in 2026, he sent me a copy of all five maps in the series. This was the first.
The map deals with Mystara’s ancient prehistory, labelled (in Italian) “The first human migrations”. An examination of the legend will reveal references to the Oltecs, Neathar and Tanagoro, as well as Thonians and Afridhi from Blackmoor. This sets the stage for the series, which seems to have been tracing the history of Blackmoor and its surrounding populations from prehistoric times all the way through to the aftermath of the Great Rain of Fire, from 50,000 to 2,200 BC.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (February 2008)
Mystara 50,000 to 8,500 BC, by Simone Neri, February 2008
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Lower Norwold, 8 miles per hex WIP

In June 2011, Simone posted in a thread at The Piazza asking about maps of the Northern Wildlands. He replied with this draft map:
I started doing this years ago, planning to write a series of mini-gazetteers on this region – lack of time and real life messed up with this project and definitely stopped it…
He also mentioned that he wasn’t sure that it covered quite the region the original poster, Ville Lahde, was looking for.
Simone provided me with a copy of the original file, which actually dated back as far as November 2007, going by the date stamp on the file itself.
It turned out to be a wonderful work-in-progress 8 mile per hex version of southern Norwold, with beautiful terrain detailing but blank of any settlements, labels, or other signs of civilisation — a blank canvas map.
Given his history as pretty much the undisputed king of Norwold mapping, it’s astounding to see an 8 mile conversion of his 24 mile per hex maps — done by Simone himself, no less! The terrain alone is a great resource. It’s such a shame that this map has not seen wider recognition or development over the years — most likely due to its obscure location, hidden in a random discussion thread and then unavailable for many years.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (November 2007)
Lower Norwold, 8 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, November 2007
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Sea of Dread, 24 miles per hex

Simone was an eager contributor to the early issues of Threshold Magazine. The peak of this was issue #3, to which he contributed three whole articles, featuring no less than five distinct maps. In addition to his Ierendi and Minrothad demographic maps and the first two maps illustrating those islands’ history, he also produced a map that fit perfectly with the issue’s theme: the Sea of Dread. He used this in his Minor Islands of the Sea of Dread article, which had the following wonderful introduction:
Whatever the origins of its name, the Sea of Dread is filled with a vast number of large, small, and tiny islands. The educated common man only knows the largest or more important islands and archipelagos – the Ierendi and Minrothad chains, the great island of Hattias and the Thyatian islands east of its, the faraway and savage Thanegioth Archipelago. Only a few people, apart from most experienced seamen, will be able to name even one of the minor islands, but neither they could keep count of all the lonely atolls, keys, and islets scattered through the sea.
Well, if you are not an ever-travelling seawolf, and more akin to watch the sea through the window of your home, or through the pages of a book, then follow us and we will bring you in a short tour of the smaller islands of the Sea of Dread.
Unfurl the topsails!
This is a classic Simone map, concentrating on the physical geography of the area, along with its toponyms. As usual, he brought together numerous sources to provide names for almost every island on the map — including all of the tiny little isles, the smallest of which received numbered key entries (on the Shire Coast as well as south of the Isle of Dread).
He also included a nice innovation: bays marked in a different colour, with all of the named bays around the Known World’s southern coast given their names where they exist.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (March 2014)
The Sea of Dread, 24 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, March 2014
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Ierendi and Colony Islands 602 to 790 AC, 24 miles per hex

Following on from the previous map directly, Simone published this third entry in his The History of Ierendi and Minrothad series in Threshold #5, featuring this map, the fourth and perhaps final one. He started his article with the following overview of the period:
The 7th and 8th centuries were a time ofconsolidation and internal transformation for the Colony Islands’ trading combine, and for the newly-created Kingdom of Ierendi. Both areas experimented with a change of political structure or a reshuffling of social classes to power; in the Ierendian case amidst serious internal turmoil and in both cases with results which produced increased internal stability.
With the Ierendian rebellion and internal upheaval in the Five Shires, Thyatian political and trading power – despite various failed efforts to reestablish it – waned from this part of the Known World, this allowed the rise of the two new trading and maritime-oriented powers of Minrothad and Ierendi, which imposed themselves over competitors both old and new – and each other. Their rivalry, from this age onward, will dominate trade and international relations in the Sea of Dread for the time to come.
I have always felt that historical maps become easier to read as they get closer to the “present day”, and this one is surely no exception. At this point in the history of the region, both Ierendi and Minrothad were beginning to resemble their 1000 AC versions, though of course the devil is in the details.
As far as I know, although Simone wrote one more article to complete this series, this was the last historical map he made for Ierendi and Minrothad.
I’ve said it in previous posts, but it’s worth saying again: I thoroughly enjoyed this journey through the history of the island nations of the northern Sea of Dread — and especially the maps. The level of professionalism evident in Simone’s approach to both the articles and the maps is astounding. I would dearly love to see more of this kind of thing for other nations in the Known World, and indeed elsewhere in Mystara.
Thank you, Simone, for this wonderful series.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (October 2014)
Ierendi and Colony Islands 602 to 790 AC, 24 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, October 2014
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Ierendi and Colony Islands 456 to 602 AC, 24 miles per hex

Three months after his History of Ierendi and Minrothad article in Threshold #3, in which Simone had featured two maps, he returned with the second part of his history — and a third map. Here’s a very informative snippet from his article, which gives a great overview of the map:
The 5th century AC had been a time of great political and economical transformations in the Sea of Dread: it had seen the decline of the old trading combine in the Colony Islands, only to see it restored again and strengthened after some decades of Thyatian control; it also had seen the slow expansion of the Thyatian trade network westward, toward the Serpent Peninsula, virtually unchallenged due to the outright trading weakness of eventual competitors – like the Traladaran states, the Kingdom of Darokin, the Five Shires, or the Sindhi realms – and to the decline of the Colony Islands’ trading combine due to the Silver Purge and its aftereffects.
Even if now that the Colony Islands’ combine had achieved independence and was again becoming a relevant trading competitor for the Thyatian Empire in the east, the 6th century AC saw the continued enlargement of the imperial trading interest to the west, with the gradual establishment of political influence over the Five Shires, the control over the Ierendi archipelago, and the expansion of the westernmost trade routes to the Green Coast of Davania, south-west of Thanegia Island. The Ierendi archipelago was at the center of this Thyatian expansion, whose effects would result at the end of the century in the establishment of the second independent island realm of the Sea of Dread.
This part featured just the one map — he would return with another article and another map in Threshold #5.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (June 2014)
Ierendi and Colony Islands 456 to 602 AC, 24 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, June 2014
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Ierendi and Colony Islands 500 BC to 400 AC, 24 miles per hex

This was the second map in Simone’s History of Ierendi and Minrothad Part 1 article, in Threshold #3. It followed on from the 1300-600 BC map, illustrating another 900 years of the region’s history. This was quite an interesting period, with a lot going on. Simone introduced this period as follows:
The disappearance of the Nithian Empire had quite different consequences on the two halves of the island chain which included the modern Ierendi and Minrothad archipelagos, which developed along widely diverging lines in the five centuries before the crowning of the first Thyatian Emperor.
What’s striking is the different colours appearing in each island group, indicating various power struggles and conflicts over control of each group. This would continue for some time.
Simone would continue his historical exploration in the next issue of Threshold.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (March 2014)
Ierendi and Colony Islands 500 BC to 400 AC, 24 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, March 2014
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Ierendi and Colony Islands 1300 to 600 BC, 24 miles per hex

Just as he followed up his Karameikan demography map and article with an Ierendi and Minrothad entry, Simone also created a History of Ierendi and Minrothad article — both for Threshold #3. He illustrated this new historical article — which was to become the first in a short series — with four maps, of which this was the first. It covered the period of early history following the cataclysmic subsistence of the Sea of Dread coast. The Makai occupied these islands in the west, with elves on Alfeisle in the southeast. These were now joined by a third group: Nithian colonists. Simone explained in his article:
Nithians were attracted to the eastern islands by their natural resources; in BC 1100, under the leadership of the hero-adventurer Minroth, the Nithians quickly took possession of most of the islands of the modern Minrothad archipelago, easily overcoming what little resistance the indigenous (Taymora-descended) population and the Traldar colonies tried to put up. They founded the city of Horonak (on the site of the modern Harbortown) on the largest of these islands, and named the whole archipelago Colony Islands in their tongue.
This is but a tiny peek at Simone’s article — I highly recommend reading the whole thing.
The wonderful thing about this map is the way that Simone tied together the various known histories of the region, dealing not just with the islands themselves, but the migrations moving past and through them, including Traldar (Milenians), Thyatians, Hin, and elves, Not to mention the Nithian colonists, of course.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (March 2014)
Ierendi and Colony Islands 1300-600 BC, 24 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, March 2014
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Minrothad, 8 miles per hex Demographic

This map appeared along with a demographic map of Ierendi in Simone’s Threshold #3 article, The Demography of Ierendi & Minrothad. He summed up the situation depicted on the map as follows:
The Minrothad Guilds are one of the most widely settled areas of the Known World. The 36% of the land has an average or better level of settlement, and — adding in the low-settlement areas — we see that most of the archipelago (67%) shares some level of settlement. Borderlands only make up for the 24% of the whole surface, while wilderness are only 10% of the total — mostly represented by volcanic terrain on Fire, Fortress, and Blackrock islands, and by the unsettled Gregus’ Ridge mountain chain on Alfeisle. Nevertheless, 85% of Minrothad’s population lives in 36% of the land — that is the areas with average or better level of settlement; only 15% of the population lives in lower settled areas.
As far as I know, this has been the last of Simone’s Known World demographic maps to date. I would dearly love to see every nation in the region covered in this style someday. Zendrolion’s Ierendi, 8 miles per hex Demographic

Following on from his Karameikos demographics in Threshold #1, Simone wrote a new article covering Ierendi and Minrothad for Threshold #3. Like the previous instalment, this one also featured beautiful demographic maps. Here’s a sample from the article:
…only a small area of the whole surface of the islands is truly settled; wilderness (37% of total land area) and borderlands (21%) still account for the greater part of the country. In fact, areas with a very high density level (over 130 people per square mile) are only found in the immediate suburban surroundings of Ierendi town, while high density areas (85-130 people per square mile) extend about 15-20 miles around that region, along the final course of the Ierendi River, and on the tract of plain and beachy seacoast north of the capital.
The focus here was very much on population density and “levels of settlement”, and Simone’s map employed a rather attractive set of colour shades to convey this information. It all resulted in a very professional-looking map: highly legible, and immediately useful.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (March 2014)
Ierendi, 8 miles per hex Demographic, by Simone Neri, March 2014
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Traladara 900 to 975 AC, 8 miles per hex

This map was the last in a seven map series Simone made for his History of Karameikos Threshold Magazine #1 article. It brought the story of Traladara to its conclusion, when it became Karameikos. This happened in two stages: first, the Thyatian Conquest, then the Karameikos takeover. Simone’s article dealt with both in detail, so I will just quote here the beginning of the story:
On the eve of the 10th century AC, Traladaran communities were again in a phase of great economic growth; coastal cities had again entered a time of economic rise, and even some inland settlement was growing again (like Vatresh, built over the ruins of Lugsid). The Thyatian Empire, more than ever interested in the vast wood deposits of Traladara, then decided to put its hands on them by conquering the region with the force of arms before the Traladaran states strengthened again or someone else began their conquest.
The campaign was launched in AC 900. The Thyatian armies, led by General Flavian Osteropolus, quickly seized control of southern Traladara, conquering Marilenev and declaring the whole country a protectorate of the empire; Marilenev was renamed Specularum and became the seat of the Thyatian governor of the Province of Traladara.
He went on to describe the whole conquest, which is handily displayed on the map in visual form. It’s a wonderful resource for anyone reading the article, or indeed those who are already familiar with this history — which is surely quite a lot of the community.
In conclusion, this whole series was a great visualisation of the text that accompanied it. The maps gave a sense of grounding and, well, geography, that the article alone could not convey by itself. They were a very welcome addition, and I would love to see more of Mystara’s history presented in this way in the future. Well done, Simone!
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (September 2013)
Traladara 900 to 975 AC, 8 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, September 2013
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Traladara 650 to 800 AC, 8 miles per hex

The penultimate map of Simone’s History of Karameikos in Threshold Magazine #1 once again showed a wounded Traladara. After the collapse of the Traladaran League, things hadn’t gone so well for them. This passage from the article is particularly vivid:
Diseases, misery, and famines plagued Traladara during the Holy Wars and during the whole 8th century AC. Many settlements had been destroyed, many clans wiped out, many people had died and many others had left for foreign lands. Once proud and wealthy cities and towns, like Vaion, Halavos, and Volaga, lay in ruins; Zadreth had been abandoned at the beginning of the Holy Wars due to a plague; and the survivors of Lugsid had abandoned their town to pillage, seeking refuge on the island of Fogor, in Lake Windrush.
Thus, the wars marked the beginning of another time of demographic loss. Dark forces, who had entered Traladara during the wars, continued to feed on those fool enough to ally with them – like Count Koriszegy, whose lands were cursed and abandoned after he had signed a pact with Entropic powers (AC 783).
At this point the primary subject of the map is territorial disputes, pressures between rival populations, and fracturing of contiguous lands. This took the map up to about a hundred years before the Thyatian invasion — the subject of the last map in the series.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (September 2013)
Traladara 650 to 800 AC, 8 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, September 2013
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Traladara 417 to 612 AC, 8 miles per hex

The fifth map from History of Karameikos by Simone in Threshold Magazine #1 focused on the middle years of the first millennium. He called this period the Traladaran League, and it also included the Lycanthropic Plague. As he wrote in the article:
The 5th century AC saw some very important events for Traladara. Around AC 410, merchants coming from the southern isles brought to Traladara the plagues of lycanthropy and vampirism with which they had been infected in the east. This sparsely-populated region of dense woods and small villages was the ideal hideout for a werewolf or a vampire. In the following decades, many communities were terrified by these creatures and Traladara became known as the favourite haven of such horrible monsters.
From there, pressure from Darokin “prompted the formation of the Traladaran League”, and a chance for a united Traladara. However, clan rivalries prevented this from happening. Which brings us to the end point of this map.
This was the period where a lot of political names that would be familiar in modern Karameikos began to emerge, although it still had many older names whose settlements and clans would be destroyed before the modern era. This is a testament to Simone’s work knitting all of these things together.
As far as I am concerned, the major difference between other fan histories and Simone’s work is that he has tended to illustrate his with extensive maps. Given that my original main interest in Mystara, even before maps, was the timeline, it should come as no surprise that this is a winning combination for me.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (September 2013)
Traladara 417 to 612 AC, 8 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, September 2013
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Traladara 458 BC to 350 AC, 8 miles per hex

This map was the fourth map of seven in Simone’s History of Karameikos article — the midpoint. It covered the period of rebirth after the Dark Age. Some relevant quotes from the article:
Toward the end of the first millennium BC, Marilenev arose to become the major city of Traladara, followed by Halavos (built near the site of old Lavv), Lugsid (a settlement born of the shore of Lake Windrush), and other towns.
The end of the Dark Age also saw the first successful attempt at uniting the Traladaran communities into one kingdom.
The turn of the first millennium AC marked the beginning of an age of rapid demographic growth for Traladara.
The modern extent of Karameikos was already somewhat visible by this era, although there would be all sorts of events and disasters in the intervening time.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (September 2013)
Traladara 458 BC to 350 AC, 8 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, September 2013
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Traladara 929-480 BC, 8 miles per hex

The third of seven maps in Simone’s Threshold Magazine #1 History of Karameikos article, this map showed Traladara during its dark age. The Beastmen Invasion was over, the Hutaaka vanished into their hidden mountain kingdom. However, this was the start of the Dark Age of the Traldar. The section of the article begins:
Even with the gnolls gone, the land would not know peace.
And frankly, that pretty much sums it all up. This was the lowest point for the Traldar. For more details, check out Simone’s article — it’s a good one.
The map itself followed the style of the others in the series. In this entry, there were a lot more migrations marked than the previous two maps had.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (September 2013)
Traladara 929-480 BC, 8 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, September 2013
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Traladara 1100-992 BC, 8 miles per hex

This was the second of seven maps in Simone’s History of Karameikos article, featured in Threshold Magazine #1. The first had shown the arrival of the pre-Traldar peoples; this one showed them from their Golden Age around 1100 BC, right up to the Great Beastmen Invasion of 1000. By 992 BC the invasion had largely run its course, with all of the settlements marked red on the map destroyed. Quoting Simone from his article:
The Traldars’ prosperity came to a sudden end when a huge horde of gnolls – the greater part of those tjat had fled from the Nithian Empire in BC 1050 – poured beyond Traldar borders from the north-west (BC 1000). The Hutaakans, aware they could not resist the gnolls’ savagery, decided to retreat to their most secure mountain shelter, the Valley of Hutaaka (seat of the Temple of Pflarr), even abandoning some of their greatest cities like Achelos… The terrible Great Beastmen Invasion which followed (BC 1000-992) saw the nearly total extermination of the Traldars.
This map also showed a split between areas of Traldar control (along the coasts) and those with Hutaakan influence or direct control.
There’s a lot going on in this map, as it deals with a crucial and well-known period in Karameikan history — one which most Mystara fans are intimately familiar with. It’s great to have it in visual form.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (September 2013)
Traladara 1100-992 BC, 8 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, September 2013
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Rakasta 3,000 to 2,000 BC

The sixth of eight maps in Simone’s Rakasta of Mystara series heralded the change to the modern world map. As the subtitle said, this was the Aftermaths of the Great Rain of Fire. Simone credited the original Master Set map, with adaptations by Michele Carpita in addition to his own changes and additions.
The note at the bottom of the map is fascinating reading, as it reveals Simone’s (and indeed the community’s) thinking at the time: we didn’t know the world map’s projection at all. Simone correctly labelled the polar openings as torus-shaped — something that it took me a lot longer to realise, but it’s absolutely true.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (August 2008)
Rakasta of Mystara 3,000 to 2,000 BC, by Simone Neri, August 2008
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Rakasta 2,000 BC to 0 AC

By the time depicted in the penultimate map in Simone’s eight map Rakasta of Mystara series, the major migrations of rakasta populations had mostly run their course. There were just a few movements in this period.
On the other hand, this was also the period in which Simone’s conception of the Tangor Peninsula was formed. A glance at the previous map (as well as Michele Carpita’s historical maps of the same period) will show that they envisaged a cataclysm in the area to explain the stark difference between the Hollow World Set Precataclysmic map and the Master Set world map. Specifically, the former has the Tangor Peninsula broken up. Simone and Michele posited that there was some form of uprising of land to form the modern peninsula. This is visible on this map as the brown area.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (August 2008)
Rakasta of Mystara 2,000 BC to 0 AC, by Simone Neri, August 2008
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Rakasta 0 to 1,000 AC

The eight and final map in Simone’s rakasta migrations series brought the timeline to the modern age. All of the known rakasta breeds were established, with very little movements.
Overall, the progression depicted across the series was classic Zendrolion, showcasing his interests and leaving the community with a terrific resource. It was also significant in that it mapped rakasta — which, along with lupins, had become far more widespread across Mystara’s surface (and beyond!) in later products and articles. Due to this being a late addition, mostly in Bruce Heard’s post-BECMI Dragon articles, they did not otherwise appear on many maps. Thus, Simone was mapping something that hadn’t been done before.
Of course, this would not be the last of his historical or migration maps.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (August 2008)
Rakasta of Mystara 0 to 1,000 AC, by Simone Neri, August 2008
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers.

Zendrolion’s Alfheim, 8 miles per hex Overlay

Shortly after the Piazza opened in 2008, I began posting map threads in the Geographical Mapping subforum of the Mystara board. Simone was kind enough to post in many of those threads, providing a great deal of information on things that could be added to each map.
This overlay of a 3 mile per hex grid on an early version of my Alfheim, 8 miles per hex map was part of one of those posts. He first posted it in the Alfheim thread, then later reposted it in the map thread for Darokin. It was paired with a similar treatment in reverse for O2’s Emerlas, 3 miles per hex map, with the aim of placing the Emerlas in the northern Canolbarth.
This literal interpretation of the maps posed a problem, as the presence of the town of Ainsun didn’t really fit with the isolated borderland feel of the Emerlas. Simone proposed a different solution:
Now, the main problem is that the description of the Emerlas matches that of a border region, where the humanoid warbands easily penetrate and where there are also some non-elven settlements. IF one wanted to keep the size of O2’s Emerlas, he would also have to explain just HOW humanoid bands could penetrate so much near Ainsun without any help arriving from Alfheim’s government.
Therefore, a solution could be to reduce the size of O2’s map so that the Emerlas areas could fit into the uppermost 24-m hex of Alfheim – that is on the area north of Blackwater River on the 8-m map.
In the event, I chose not to touch this rather thorny issue, and as a result the Atlas of Mystara Updated map of Alfheim does not include the Emerlas or any of O2’s features.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (July 2008)
Alfheim, 8 miles per hex by Thorfinn Tait, with 3 mile per hex overlay by Simone Neri, July 2008
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Emerlas, 3 miles per hex Overlay

Simone added an 8 mile per hex overlay to O2’s Emerlas, 3 miles per hex map. It was paired with an Alfheim, 8 miles per hex map showing a 3 mile per hex overlay. He posted both of these maps at The Piazza in the Geographical Mapping forum’s Alfheim map thread. For more discussion of this issue, see the post for the other map.
Although his Piazza post was in July 2008, these two maps were very likely much older. Indeed, in the same post, Simone dismissed the idea of using the placement as is, due to conflicts between O2 and GAZ5’s version of Alfheim. This map neatly displayed the problem: the well-established town of Ainsun (GAZ5) lay just a short distance away from the village of Dorneryll (O2).
The red labels on the map were Simone’s additions, mostly in Italian. They indicate that he almost certainly posted these maps to the Italian MMB some time previously.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (July 2008)
Emerlas, 3 miles per hex by Paul Ruiz, with 8 mile per hex overlay by Simone Neri, July 2008
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Karameikos, 8 miles per hex Demographic

After a flurry of mapping activity from 2006-2008 or so, Simone spent the next four or five years on other projects, producing only a handful of maps. Then he returned in style, contributing a whole new series of both demographic and historical maps to Threshold Magazine #1 in September 2013.
This map illustrated Simone’s article about populations, The Demography of Karameikos. The article comprised an update to his previous take of the area in his Demografia Mystarana. He introduced it as follows:
In this article we provide an overview of the population of Karameikos– how many people inhabit the Grand Duchy, which races, how the population is spread among the country, population density, and so on. First, we will see how Karameikos is described in official supplements, then we will suggest a different approach to the issue of Karameikan population, based on population figures inspired by a comparison with real-world demographic data in the Middle Ages. The goal is to present figures which are more in line with those of European Middle Age countries, while preserving the low-magic, mostly-wilderness character that identifies the Karameikan region.
He approached his map in a similar way to how he handled his Denagoth maps of 2006. However, in the intervening years Simone’s skills as a cartographer had grown, resulting in a more attractive map with a high degree of polish. Really, it was a pleasure to behold. Instead of conforming exactly to the hex grid, he used more organic-looking shapes that mostly coincided with it. This technique avoided making the map look too artificial while still making it relatively easy to count hexes.
While his maps of this period all follow a similar style, this was one of the only maps to tackle demography directly; all of his other maps focused on history.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (September 2013)
Karameikos, 8 miles per hex Demographic, by Simone Neri, September 2013
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. Zendrolion’s Traladara 1500 BC, 8 miles per hex

In addition to his demography of Karameikos map and article, Simone also produced a long History of Karameikos article for Threshold Magazine #1. It featured a series of seven maps tracing the land of Traladara/Karameikos through the ages, of which this was the first.
This map’s placement in the article didn’t make it entirely clear precisely what time period it was intended to cover, but luckily Simone included some dates in the legend, the earliest of which was 1500 BC. I have therefore labelled the map with that date. To quote from the article:
Around BC 1500, a Nithian private expedition led by the Ptahr-al-Dar clans came from the sea and began to settle the coasts of the land corresponding to modern Karameikos; inland, they found the descendants of the Taymora, who they called the “People of the Night”, and swiftly subdued them.
As with his demographic map, Simone used coloured shapes to detail the map. Although they were close, they didn’t quite conform to the hex grid, giving the map a nice, organic feel.
He would continue to track the history of Traladara in six more maps, all the way from the Nithian age here up to Thyatian conquest.
Fan-made Map by Simone Neri (September 2013)
Traladara 1500 BC, 8 miles per hex, by Simone Neri, September 2013
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers.
