We’re chatting on Signal, enjoying encryption, right? But your DIY productivity agent is piping the whole thing back to Anthropic.

Friend, you’ve just created a permanent subpoena-able record of my private thoughts held by a corporation that owes me zero privacy protections.

Even when folks use open-source agents like #openclaw in decentralized setups, the default /easy configuration is to plug in an API resulting in data getting backhauled to Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.

And so those providers get all the good stuff: intimate confessions, legal strategies, work gripes. Worse? Even if you’ve made peace with this, your friends absolutely haven’t consented to their secrets piped to a datacenter. Do they even know?

Governments are spending a lot of time trying to kill end-to-end encryption, but if we’re not careful, we’ll do the job for them.

The problem is big & growing:

Threat 1: proprietary AI agents. Helpers inside apps or system-wide stuff. Think: desktop productivity tools by a big company. Hello, Copilot. These companies already have tons of incentive to soak up your private stuff & are very unlikely to respect developer intent & privacy without big fights (Those fights need to keep happening)

Threat 2: DIY agents that are privacy leaky as hell, not through evil intent or misaligned ethics, but just because folks are excited and moving quickly. Or carelessly. And are using someone’s API.

I sincerely hope is that the DIY/ OpenSource ecosystem that is spinning up around AI agents has some privacy heroes in it. Because it should be possible to do some building & standards that use permission and privacy as the first principle.

Maybe we can show what’s possible for respecting privacy so that we can demand it from big companies?

Respecting your friends means respecting when they use encrypted messaging. It means keeping privacy-leaking agents out of private spaces without all-party consent.

Ideas to mull (there are probably better ones, but I want to be constructive):

Human only mode/ X-No-Agents flags
How about converging on some standards & app signals that AI agents must respect, absolutely. Like signals that an app/chat can emit & be opted out of exposure to an AI agent.

Agent Exclusion Zones
For example, starting with the premise that the correct way to respect developer (& user intent) with end to end encrypted apps is that they not be included, perhaps with the exception [risky tho!] of whitelisting specific chats etc. This is important right now since so many folks are getting excited about connecting their agents to encrypted messengers as a control channel, which is going to mean lots more integrations soon.

#NoSecretAgents Dev Pledge
Something like a developer pledge that agents will declare themselves in chat and not share data to a backend without all-party consent.

None of these ideas are remotely perfect, but unless we start experimenting with them now, we're not building our best future.

Next challenge? Local Only / Private Processing: local-First as a default.
Unless we move very quickly towards a world where the processing that agents do is truly private (e.g. not accessible to a third party) and/or local by default, even if agents are not shipping signal chats, they are creating an unbelievably detailed view into your personal world, held by others. And fundamentally breaking your own mental model of what on your device is & isn't under your control / private.

Every dissident organization eventually wonders whether it has been infiltrated, and the honest answer is that it probably has been, or will be, or would be if it ever became effective enough to matter. The documented history of state counterintelligence programs reveals an uncomfortable truth that no detection checklist can fully address: when the state decides to penetrate an organization, it brings resources, training, and patience that most targets cannot match. The more important question is not how to spot the spy but how to build structures that render the spy's presence futile.

The FBI's COINTELPRO program, which officially operated from 1956 to 1971 but whose tactics continued long after its formal termination, placed informants inside virtually every significant dissident movement of its era. The Black Panthers, the antiwar movement, the civil rights organizations, the socialist parties, and the environmental groups all discovered, often too late, that trusted members had been reporting to handlers throughout. The Church Committee investigation revealed not merely passive surveillance but active provocation: forged documents designed to create internal splits, anonymous letters spreading rumors about leaders, and agents deliberately encouraging illegal activity to justify prosecution. When FBI assistant director William Sullivan testified about these tactics, he was blunt about the operational mindset: "No holds were barred. We have used these techniques against Soviet agents. They have used them against us. We did not differentiate."

The modern informant ecosystem operates with even greater sophistication. The FBI's Confidential Human Source program, formalized after 2004, represents a professionalization of the old COINTELPRO methods. Leaked guidelines reveal that agents build extensive dossiers on potential recruits before making contact, collecting "derogatory information" that can be used for leverage. They may use covert identities to approach targets, and they are not bound by the same meeting limitations that constrain standard undercover operations. A single field office can authorize payments up to one hundred thousand dollars per year to a single informant, and the guidelines explicitly permit recruiting journalists, clergy, and lawyers with proper authorization. The network is vast, and its members are selected precisely because they can blend in.

The British case of Mark Kennedy illustrates what deep infiltration actually looks like. Kennedy spent seven years living as "Mark Stone," an environmental activist. He attended protests across Europe, formed intimate relationships with multiple women in the movement, and became a trusted figure who participated in planning and actions. When he was finally exposed in 2010, activists discovered that his passport, his backstory, his entire persona had been manufactured by police handlers who monitored his movements and communications daily. The women he deceived were not naive; they were experienced activists who had known him for years. One of them later testified that "he was trained in manipulation techniques, he was trained in lying. A backstory was created for him by and with his employers. He had a back-room team of people supporting him wherever he went." Kennedy was not an outlier. The subsequent Undercover Policing Inquiry revealed a pattern spanning decades, with officers stealing the identities of dead children for cover and receiving explicit or tacit approval for their sexual deceptions.

The Brandon Darby case in the United States demonstrates how the agent provocateur operates. Darby was a celebrated activist who had co-founded Common Ground Relief in post-Katrina New Orleans. When he began working as an FBI informant in 2007, he used his reputation and his influence as an older, more experienced organizer to cultivate relationships with younger activists planning protests at the 2008 Republican National Convention. Two young men, Bradley Crowder and David McKay, constructed Molotov cocktails after extended exposure to Darby's militant rhetoric and were promptly arrested on information Darby provided. At trial, witnesses testified that Darby "was the one to suggest violence, when the rest of us clearly disagreed" and that as "an older seasoned activist, Darby had a lot of sway over Crowder and McKay." Both men went to prison. Darby, the man who by multiple accounts had encouraged the escalation, testified for the prosecution.

These cases point toward a fundamental asymmetry that detection-focused security culture cannot overcome. The state can afford to be patient, to invest years in building cover, to provide resources and training that make their agents useful to the organizations they infiltrate. The activist trying to spot the spy, by contrast, has only suspicion and intuition to work with. The standard advice to watch for inconsistencies in background stories, unexplained access to resources, or eagerness to push toward illegal activity is not wrong, but it fails against the competent infiltrator who has been coached to avoid exactly these tells. Worse, a detection-obsessed culture breeds the paranoia that COINTELPRO documents explicitly sought to create. An FBI memo from 1970 advised agents to encourage "the impression that there is an FBI agent behind every mailbox" because the resulting suspicion and internal conflict would do more damage than any individual informant. When movements consume themselves with accusations and counter-accusations, the state wins without lifting a finger.

The cypherpunk tradition offers a different framework for thinking about the infiltration problem, one that begins by accepting the presence of adversaries as a design constraint rather than a failure to be prevented. Eric Hughes wrote in A Cypherpunk's Manifesto that "we cannot expect governments, corporations, or other large, faceless organizations to grant us privacy," and the same logic applies to organizational security. The goal is not to achieve perfect exclusion of adversaries but to build systems where their presence cannot accomplish its purpose.

In cryptographic terms, this means designing for security under the assumption that the adversary knows everything except the secret keys. In organizational terms, it means decentralization, compartmentalization, and communication channels that the infiltrator cannot compromise regardless of their access. When no single person holds enough information to destroy the network, the value of infiltrating that person drops dramatically. When communications are encrypted end-to-end, the informant can report what was said in the meeting but cannot hand over the contents of private channels. When organizational structures are flat and redundant rather than hierarchical and centralized, the removal of any individual, whether by arrest or exposure, does not cripple the whole.

This is not an argument against vigilance. Organizations should still vet members, should still pay attention when someone's story does not add up, should still refuse to tolerate the aggressive and divisive behavior that documented infiltrators have consistently displayed. The point is that these measures are a second line of defense, not the primary one. The primary defense is structural: build so that even successful infiltration cannot achieve its objectives.

The historical record is clear that the state will infiltrate opposition movements whenever it perceives them as threatening. The tactical response of attempting to identify and exclude infiltrators has repeatedly failed, missing the real agents while enabling the paranoia and internal conflict the state wanted all along. The strategic response is to accept infiltration as a given and design accordingly, treating the spy not as a catastrophe to be prevented but as an environmental hazard to be engineered around. The cypherpunks understood decades ago that the only sustainable answer to pervasive surveillance was cryptography that made surveillance ineffective. The same principle applies to the spy in the room: the goal is not to keep them out but to ensure that their presence changes nothing.

Over the past two weeks, protests have started across Iran. Very little of what is happening is being accurately reported, and a significant amount of false information is circulating. Much of it is deliberately engineered by the Islamic Republic regime and the IRGC to buy time while they suppress the protests.

It’s been a week and the internet has been completely shut down, and there is no contact with inside Iran. This is unprecedented. Mobile communication is unavailable—text messages and landlines too. People cannot even communicate with each other inside Iran.

The last time the regime imposed a nationwide internet blackout was around six years ago. At least 1,500 people were killed during that period. It set a very grim precedent, and what is happening now is even more severe. I haven’t heard anything from my friends and family in days. Even some of my friends who are very tech-savvy—I haven’t heard anything from them.

A very small number of people had smuggled Starlink terminals in before this, which has made it possible for a very limited number of videos to come out. Why aren't there more of these? because it's difficult to smuggle, they are expensive and they are extremly risky to own or use in Iran (the regime will put you away in jail for 5 to 10 years if they find out you have one).

The reason for these blackouts is that the Islamic Republic regime ruling Iran doesn’t want any kind of exposure to their killings—so people can’t tell the world what’s happening to them.

It’s like the regime covers up the whole country with a very heavy blanket and then starts killing and shooting people under it, and their crimes go unnoticed.

The main reason I’m writing this here is that while our people are being shot, we (the Iranian diaspora) open any social media or platform and see tons of accounts claiming that we’re telling lies about a massacre happening in Iran.

To this moment, there have been reports of 12,000 people being killed in only 2 days. For those who cannot fathom the 12,000 number for #IranMassacre, I can only say that it is probably much higher. And the number will grow even more once the regime starts executing those who are detained. The regime announced that the first execution will be tomorrow. Check: #ErfanSoltani and spread his name.

I know how evil this regime is because I was a political prisoner during the 2022 protests; some of my cellmates were executed. I lived my whole life in Iran until two years ago. My friends and family are still there. I’ve received messages from them. Also, there have been many firsthand accounts from doctors in hospitals and protesters on the ground that confirm different pieces of these numbers. External sources also confirm reports of these figures. Even the Islamic Republic regime itself admits to a few thousand so far—which, based on its (full of lies) past, is a huge understatement.

There are hundreds of videos from Tehran alone showing people receiving the bodies of family members, with hundreds and thousands of bodies lying on the ground—in warehouses or in trucks.

There is a countrywide internet blackout (#DigitalBlackoutIran), making the flow of information extremely difficult. We have no media journalists recording footage of these atrocities. We rely on citizen observations and recordings, our past experience with this regime, and investigative research to build the picture.

I don’t even know if some of my friends are dead or alive at this moment. We don’t know. I was barely able to get confirmation that my wife is alive and safe, but I’m not able to get confirmation for all of my friends.

Why did people take to the streets and start protesting?

We (the people of Iran) have been trying to overthrow the Islamic Republic regime for more than two decades now, through a number of uprisings, and every time we have faced guns and executions—and hundreds or thousands killed. Unfortunately, we cannot take down the IRGC corps (200k armed forces) with just bare hands.

The Islamic Republic regime ruling over Iran is one of the most evil groups of humans you can ever imagine. They have caused misery for the people of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and others through their terrorist proxy networks. They fund these networks and provide them with weaponry and everything needed—at the expense of the Iranian people’s lives and prosperity. Their Islamic tyranny has also forced our people in Iran to be cornered in a cut-off country, with a severe economic situation, hyperinflation, and zero human rights.

When the Islamic Republic took power, it forced women to wear hijab and dictated their lives. They have killed women simply for the fact that they may show a few strands of hair (hence the 2022 protests for Woman, Life, Freedom after the death of Mahsa Amini).

Every day people are being hit with more and more inflation. When I left Iran, $1 was equal to 30,000 IRR (which in itself was already a many-fold surge). Now it is around 2,000,000 IRR. The currency has depreciated, and so much of this depreciation happens in steps overnight. You wake up and literally overnight you have lost 20%, 40%, or at times 50% of your savings in a single day.

Do Iranians need Israeli intervention—or Israeli propaganda and American propaganda—to make us revolt against this regime? Absolutely not. There is legitimate ground for being dissatisfied with the way things are run. Every time protest is met with violence. Every time more people get killed. More anger. How can you silence someone who has lost her son, or his daughter? This builds up and erupts every time much more strongly than before.

The silence is something I cannot comprehend.

People try to voice concerns wherever any atrocity is going on. But some people living in the West, with full access to information, decide to ignore this because they think it is some master plan by intelligence agencies. We didn’t need any intelligence agency to be dissatisfied with and outraged by the Islamic Republic regime.

Some people might think this regime is against Israel, so in order to be against Israel they should support this regime. No. If you have any problem with Israel, it doesn’t change the fact that the Islamic Republic has been—and currently is—killing people. Be our voice.

And then there is misinformation and propaganda—calculated propaganda.

Good information gets out, but misinformation is heard louder, shared more often, and unfortunately is in the mainstream.

In 2020, around this time of the year in January, they shot a whole passenger plane in the sky with two rockets. Not a fighter jet—a passenger plane. 90% of the people on that plane were their own citizens. They lied for straight-up three days until foreign intelligence agencies revealed it was shot by missiles. After that they admitted it: “Yeah, we shot it with rockets, sorry.” For three days the regime tried to hide the evidence. They brought bulldozers to bury any evidence of that plane but, fortunately, international reports revealed the truth. Then, once the truth was out (and only then), the IR regime changed their narrative and declared that they actually shot it with missiles.

The Islamic Republic regime has mastered a propaganda system.

If they cannot physically eliminate dissent or physically eliminate the opposition, they hijack its intellectual software. They hijack the intellect behind it. How? By narrative capture.

Satellite technology is a good example. They tried to eliminate satellite dishes—cracking down on people just because they wanted to watch TV channels from all over the world—but they weren’t able to do it, because it was cheap and easy to smuggle. So if they cannot physically destroy it, they hijack it: sending influencers and analysts to satellite channels to spread their propaganda and agenda.

That’s why you see media influencers and personalities all over the world protecting the Islamic Republic. We know for a fact they are being funded. There have been data leaks showing ties and connections, proxies, money networks.

This is a massacre. This is a brutal situation. People are being killed in the streets. The regime has put a huge blanket over the country, silenced all voices, and with the history it has, it has shown what it does in such circumstances.

We have seen some solidarity. We have seen some voice. But we have also seen silence, denial, propaganda, and people playing into it.

Be our voice. Talk. Raise awareness. Don’t muddy the water for a regime that only buys time and kills as many people as it can.

The Situation

The fundamental problem is that you cannot wish reality into a different shape. The masses believed that fixing the problems caused by the last fix would eventually produce paradise. It does not. It never has. The only thing central planning creates reliably is misery for those at the bottom of the pyramid.

Humanity has achieved much. Hunger and plague have been largely overcome for hundreds of millions. But instead of embracing what made this possible, the satisfied masses of the West spit on it. Rule of law, functional markets, economic freedom. Instead of dismantling harmful corporatism, the call is for more democratic control, more government blessing, more protection from above. As if history taught nothing. As if only a productive lifestyle, not a parasitic one, can advance the human condition.

Our systems are fragile. Built on redistribution and top-down control rather than individual achievement and decision-making. Economists and complexity theorists increasingly understand this fragility. We face two options: delay the decay or accelerate the collapse. There is no third path where intervention finally works.

The task ahead remains what it was decades ago. We need a more disentangled world, more decisions made by individuals, more diversity. One rule suffices for human cooperation: do not steal.

You probably know all this already. The question that matters is: where do we go from here?

Three Steps

First, stop waiting for mass approval. Deprogram yourself from collectivist thought and hoping the masses will wake up. Do not waste time trying to fix politics, win over majorities, or receive mainstream validation. You are on your own for now. Every achiever is alone at first, possibly for a long time. Societies break down collectively, but they are rebuilt individually.

Second, realize that you must be a builder. There is no one to wait for. No blueprint to hand to future architects. If you do not act, nothing will be. If you do not implement your goals, they will never materialize. And even if someone else builds what you wanted, you would have no claim to it. You would be a free rider, and free riders cannot complain when the thing they wanted never appears.

Third, cooperate and compete. The division of labor was one of humanity's greatest discoveries. But neither cooperation nor competition works for those who produce nothing. You cannot sit around waiting for the market to fulfill your dreams. The market does not create. It only amplifies the actions of those who do comparatively well while eliminating those who produce waste. Entrepreneurs bring things into existence. People who act and face reality. Individuals who invest, think, build, then compete and cooperate. The market rewards and punishes. It creates nothing.

These three steps build on each other. They are complete only together.

Opposition

Understand that what we do is cultural entrepreneurship. We create cultural systems. And the current culture does not welcome our input. It opposes everything we represent. The dominant culture offers security through numbers, comfort in conformity. Everything we build threatens its structure.

If you doubt this, present the ideas of cryptoanarchy or radical individualism to your peer group. Watch the reaction.

This opposition has consequences. Developing the current system into something new would consume enormous energy with little probability of success. It makes more sense to build independently of what exists. We have no chance of mass approval before we have already outcompeted existing systems. And even then, approval is not a goal worth pursuing for its own sake.

The competition with dominant culture involves real risks. We are met with resistance. Those who defend the current order will take action against alternatives they perceive as threatening. Being active as a cultural entrepreneur building a competing way of life carries personal risks. Take reasonable security measures. Do not be naive. But do not lock yourself in a castle and become ineffective either. You can lose by being overpowered or by being scared into submission while your capacity for action withers. Good security defends against the first. Courage defends against the second.

Beyond the Digital

We have made progress in some areas. Decentralized communication exists. Censorship-resistant social networks are being built. Cryptocurrency provides an alternative monetary rail. These are real achievements.

But they are nowhere near sufficient.

A parallel society cannot run on social networks and payment rails alone. The cypherpunks gave us the communication layer. Bitcoin gave us the money layer. What we lack is nearly everything else: the production layer, the physical infrastructure, the human institutions that make daily life possible without dependence on hostile systems.

The future will not consist of money-movers and coders only. Coders and financiers create platforms and tools. But life comes from those who produce real goods and services: thousands of trades and products that people actually need. The farmer, the carpenter, the machinist, the small merchant. A society of app developers and traders starves in a day. If you are reading this and you are neither a coder nor a financier, you may be exactly who is most needed.

This means embracing the physical. Not everything is digital. Life does not happen on the internet. Because we are not welcome in contemporary institutions, we cannot delegate the physical to them. Mixing our activities with their banking, their justice systems, their identity infrastructure makes us vulnerable. Create physical places to meet and trade. Physical currency and barter networks. Warehouses, marketplaces, workshops. Protect your personal perimeter but do not hide entirely. There is no life and no progress in staying dug into a digital fortress.

The combination of digital and physical creates real power. Digital communication enables coordination across distances. Physical production creates the goods and services that sustain actual human life. Neither alone is sufficient. Together they enable something new: a distributed society that can grow slowly across geography while building real economic substance.

You are not alone in this, nor should you try to be. Division of labor requires others. We need peers who provide new insights, new capabilities, or simply understanding. Trade and economy are about relationships more than transactions. Business relationships become friendships, collaborations, new ventures. A new society requires social fabric. Invest in relationships. Find or build your tribe.

What Is Required

You will feel fear. This is appropriate. Fear keeps you alert, ensures you maintain security practices, protects against carelessness. But you must rule your fear rather than letting it rule you. Use it as a tool, not a cage. Your future depends on whether you can act despite fear rather than being paralyzed by it.

Many have asked where the networks are, the movements to join, the leaders to follow. There are none, at least not in the way they imagine. What exists is a distributed collection of people who have decided to build rather than wait. Entry requires becoming one of them.

What we do is risky, and we know it. What we build has value, but we know our implementations might not be optimal. We have learned that quality of associates matters enormously. Energy spent on those who only consume is energy unavailable for building.

We are not offering free passage. If you wait for others to solve your problems, implement your vision, lift you up, you will wait forever. It is not anyone's job to do work you must do yourself. Do it yourself. If you do, others who build will notice, and collaboration becomes possible.

Passivity accomplishes nothing. What matters is action: building, trading, producing, creating. Talk has its place, but talk without action is just noise. Those who act are rare and valuable. Those who only discuss are common and contribute little.

Our world is not a place of entitlements. What we build costs us dearly and continues to. Compensation matters. Honor matters. Keeping commitments matters. We are merchants, craftsmen, builders, entrepreneurs. Contrary to stereotype, this requires being civilized and trustworthy. Trade depends on reliability. We hold ourselves to this standard and expect the same from those we work with.

Be patient. Good things take time. Be quick to act, but patient in building.

You might think all this is too demanding. That there must be an easier path, a lighter burden. Perhaps there is, but we have not found it. What we have found is that the rewards of building are real, even when the work is hard. The alternative is waiting for a freedom that never arrives.

The Peculiar Phenomenon

Consider the strangeness of the arrangement. Billions of people labor under taxation, conscription, regulation, and surveillance. Most accept this as natural, even beneficial. They are told that this represents "self-government," that the state is merely themselves acting collectively.

Yet a moment's reflection reveals the absurdity. When the state taxes you, do you feel you are taxing yourself? When its agents arrest you, are you arresting yourself? When it conscripts your children for war, have you conscripted your own children?

The puzzle is not why states exist. Force is an effective tool. The puzzle is why anyone celebrates the arrangement. Understanding this requires examining what the state actually is, rather than what it claims to be.

What the State Is Not

The state is not society. Society consists of individuals engaged in voluntary cooperation, exchange, mutual aid, and association. These relationships emerge spontaneously wherever people interact. The state, by contrast, is an organization imposed upon society, claiming authority over all persons and property within a territory.

The conflation of state and society has intensified under democratic governance. "We are the government" becomes the refrain. But this formulation leads to absurdities. If the democratic government is simply "the people," then every act of the state is an act of the people upon themselves. Taxation becomes voluntary contribution. Imprisonment becomes self-confinement. War becomes collective suicide.

The state is not a voluntary association. Every other organization in society must persuade people to join, to pay, to participate. The state alone claims the right to compel. It alone obtains revenue not through willing customers but through threat of violence. This is not a minor distinction. It is the defining characteristic.

The state is not the protector of property. This is perhaps its most successful deception. The state presents itself as the guardian of property rights, the enforcer of contracts, the shield against theft. Yet the state itself survives only through systematic violation of property. Taxation is not a service fee. It is confiscation. The thief who steals your wallet and the state that takes your income differ only in the latter's claim to legitimacy.

What the State Is

The German sociologist Franz Oppenheimer, writing in 1907, identified two means by which people can satisfy their needs. The first is production and voluntary exchange. Oppenheimer called this the "economic means." The second is the forcible appropriation of what others have produced. He called this the "political means."

The state, Oppenheimer concluded, is "the organization of the political means." It does not produce. It confiscates. It does not serve. It extracts. Every dollar spent by the state was first taken from someone who earned it.

This analysis explains the fundamental division Oppenheimer and later John C. Calhoun identified: society splits into taxpayers and tax-consumers. Those who bear the burden of supporting the state, and those who live off its disbursements. Bureaucrats who pay income taxes are, on net, tax-consumers; their salaries come from the productive sector. The same is true of state contractors, subsidy recipients, and beneficiaries of regulatory protection.

The state's historical origins confirm this analysis. No state in recorded history emerged from a voluntary social contract. States arose through conquest. Nomadic warrior bands subdued agricultural peoples and established themselves as ruling classes. The "social contract" is a rationalization invented centuries after the fact by intellectuals eager to legitimize what had been established by the sword.

How the State Preserves Itself

A puzzle remains. The state is a minority. Even vast modern bureaucracies represent a small fraction of the population. Why do the many obey the few?

David Hume answered this question in the eighteenth century: even the most dictatorial government rests on the support of the majority of its subjects. Étienne de La Boétie, writing in 1553, had already identified the mechanism. Tyranny persists not primarily through force but through voluntary servitude. The many choose to obey. They could stop at any moment. As La Boétie wrote: "Resolve to serve no more, and you are at once freed."

This is why ideology matters more than arms. The state must convince subjects that its rule is necessary, beneficial, or inevitable. Various ideologies have served this purpose: divine right of kings, scientific expertise, democratic representation. Each wraps predation in the language of legitimacy.

The alliance between state and intellectuals is ancient and essential. Rothbard called them "court intellectuals." Their role is to provide the rationalizations that make state predation palatable. A robber who stole your money while claiming his spending "stimulated the economy" would be laughed at. When the same argument is clothed in Keynesian terminology and delivered by credentialed economists, it carries weight.

Modern academia functions as an ideological factory. State-funded universities train successive generations of intellectuals whose livelihoods depend on state patronage. They set the boundaries of "respectable" thought. They brand alternatives as extremism. The Supreme Court exemplifies this dynamic. Originally conceived as a check on government power, it has become, in Rothbard's words, "another instrument for furnishing ideological legitimacy to the government's actions."

Custom reinforces ideology. La Boétie observed that "custom becomes the first reason for voluntary servitude." People raised under the state come to regard it as natural, inevitable, part of the order of things. They cannot imagine alternatives.

How the State Transcends Its Limits

Constitutional limits are meant to constrain the state. But who enforces these limits? The state itself. The Supreme Court decides what the Constitution means. Unsurprisingly, each generation of Court decisions has expanded the scope of permissible state action. Written parchment cannot restrain living power.

War is the state's preferred method for transcending its limits. Randolph Bourne, writing as America entered the First World War, observed: "War is the health of the State." In wartime, emergency powers are assumed, opposition is silenced as treasonous, and the population is mobilized behind the state apparatus.

Each modern war has left a permanent legacy of increased state power. The income tax, once temporary, became permanent. Agencies created for wartime never dissolved. The emergency never quite ends. A new crisis always emerges to justify what the old crisis established.

This is the ratchet effect. Each expansion of state power becomes the new baseline. Even after wars end, the state rarely contracts to pre-war size. "National security" becomes permanent justification for permanent surveillance, permanent military expenditure, permanent secrecy.

What the State Fears

If the state depends on consent, then withdrawal of consent is its fundamental vulnerability. La Boétie saw this clearly. The tyrant appears mighty, but he has "nothing more than the power that you confer upon him." Simply refuse to cooperate, and he falls "like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away."

The state fears decentralization and secession. It must maintain its territorial monopoly. Rothbard noted that decentralization means "greater competition between governments of different geographical areas, enabling people of one State to zip across the border to relatively greater freedom more easily." The right of exit disciplines power. When people can leave, rulers must moderate their exactions or watch their tax base disappear.

The state fears independent intellectual centers. The alliance of state and intellectuals can be broken. Rothbard noted that the Renaissance and Enlightenment were achieved by working outside (and sometimes against) entrenched universities. Independently funded academies, publishing houses, and research institutes can produce and disseminate ideas that the state-sponsored intellectual class will not touch.

Above all, the state fears clarity. Its survival depends on mystification. If the average citizen saw taxation as theft, conscription as slavery, and war as mass murder for the benefit of the ruling class, the ideological legitimacy would collapse. The court intellectuals work ceaselessly to prevent this clarity. They complicate simple truths with jargon, obscure predation with euphemism, and dismiss dissent as naive or extreme.

The Task

Understanding the anatomy of the state is not mere intellectual exercise. It points toward action. The scope of the political means must be shrunk; the scope of the economic means must be expanded. Decentralization must be encouraged at every level. Independent institutions must be built and sustained. The mystifications of the court intellectuals must be exposed and refuted.

The state presents itself as the embodiment of civilization, the alternative to chaos, the protector of order. In reality, it is simply organized predation. Every tax is theft. Every regulation is a command backed by violence. Every war is murder and destruction dressed in flags.

The task is to see clearly, to say plainly, and to build alternatives. The tyrant's power rests on the pedestal of consent. That pedestal can be pulled away.

The Rumor That Wasn't

NIP-17 gift-wrapped messages promise privacy through a clever three-layer design: an unsigned "rumor" (the actual message), wrapped in a signed "seal" (encrypted to recipient), wrapped in an ephemeral "gift wrap" (hides metadata). The unsigned rumor supposedly provides deniability: if leaked, no one can prove who wrote it.

This is cryptographic theater.

Here's why: Bob receives a gift wrap, decrypts it to find a seal signed by Alice's real key, then decrypts the seal to read the rumor. Now Bob faces a devious choice. He can prove to anyone that Alice sent him something by showing the signed seal. The seal's signature is undeniable, only Alice's private key could create it. But Bob can't prove what the message says without revealing his private key, which would compromise all his messages.

This creates the perfect gossip attack: "Alice sent me something inappropriate, here's cryptographic proof she messaged me, though I won't reveal my key to show you what." The signed seal enables reputation destruction without proof of content.

The Zero-Knowledge Twist

But it gets worse. Bob doesn't need to reveal his key at all. Using zero-knowledge proofs, Bob can prove the exact message content without revealing his private key.

The ZK circuit proves: "I know a private key that (1) corresponds to Bob's public key, (2) decrypts this signed seal to reveal specific content, and (3) the seal has Alice's valid signature." The proof takes 10-30 seconds to generate on modern hardware and instantly convinces anyone that Alice sent that exact message.

The rumor being unsigned is irrelevant, the signed seal already breaks deniability. It's like putting an unsigned letter in a signed envelope. The signature on the envelope proves you sent that specific contents, even if the letter itself has no signature.

The Fundamental Triangle

You can only have two of these three properties:

Decentralized + Authenticated = NIP-17/MLS → Messages are signed, creating proof
Authenticated + Deniable = Signal/OTR → Uses symmetric MACs, requires server coordination
Decentralized + Deniable = Anonymous systems → No authentication at all

Why? In decentralized systems, messages must be self-authenticating so relays can verify them without coordination. This requires signatures. But signatures create non-repudiable proof, the exact opposite of deniability.

How Signal Actually Solves This

Signal achieves deniability through a completely different approach:

No signatures on messages, only on one-time key exchanges

Symmetric authentication using HMACs that both parties can forge

Trusted servers that coordinate without verifying signatures

Malleable transcripts, either party can fabricate entire conversations

After a Signal conversation, Bob can create a fake transcript showing Alice said anything, and it's cryptographically indistinguishable from real messages. This is deniability: not that messages can't be proven, but that "proof" is meaningless because forgeries are undetectable.

Signal's approach requires centralized coordination. Messages flow through trusted servers that don't verify signatures. Keys are distributed by servers that clients trust. This is antithetical to Nostr's decentralized philosophy.

The Marmot Reality Check

I investigated whether the Marmot protocol (using MLS) solves this. It doesn't. MLS has the exact same vulnerability: every message contains a FramedContentAuthData with the sender's signature.

RFC 9750 explicitly states: "MLS does not make any claims with regard to deniability." In fact, MLS deliberately chose non-repudiation to enable abuse reporting, the opposite of deniability.

The MLS architects made the same choice as Nostr: accountability over deniability. This isn't a bug or oversight, it's a fundamental tradeoff.

The Uncomfortable Truth

Perfect deniability is impossible in Nostr's architecture.

To achieve Signal-style deniability, Nostr would need: - MACs instead of signatures (breaks relay verification) - Trusted coordinators (defeats decentralization)
- Synchronous key exchange (kills asynchronous messaging) - No per-message authentication (enables forgery)

The current NIP-17 design provides: - Network privacy: Gift wrap hides who's talking - Content secrecy: Only recipients can decrypt - Partial deniability: Can't prove exact content without key revelation

But it deliberately sacrifices: - True deniability: Recipients can prove communication occurred - Gossip protection: Vulnerable to "Alice sent me something bad" attacks

What This Means for Nostr

The Nostr community should acknowledge this tradeoff explicitly. NIP-17 is excellent for censorship resistance and metadata privacy, but it's not suitable for truly deniable communications. Users needing real deniability should use Signal or Session.

The unsigned "rumor" provides psychological comfort but no cryptographic protection. The signed seal is the vulnerability, and it's unfixable without redesigning Nostr's entire authentication model.

This isn't a failure, it's physics. Cryptography has limits. The impossible triangle of decentralized, authenticated, and deniable messaging is truly impossible. Every protocol must choose its compromises.

Nostr chose decentralization and authentication. That's a valid choice. But calling the messages "deniable" because the inner layer is unsigned? That's not cryptography, that's marketing.

The gossip attack is real. The ZK proof works. And the rumor isn't deniable after all.
