I almost died from chicken thighs. I was getting things out of the freezer and bumped some chicken thighs on the top shelf, put them back, finished pulling out the bag of shrimp, then proceeded to pull a chicken out of the bottom drawer as the frozen chicken thighs tried to escape again and landed on my head. 💥

Not as bad as the time when I had a 6 inch log over my head using it as a lever to rock the bumper that was stuck on a ledge of dirt.. and it broke. That rung my bell.

I couldn't see it with my safety squinting eyes (wind ash) ...

I couldn't see it with my safety squinting eyes (wind ash) but I see the sun is in my 'photo of the sun'. The darkness really messes with you, makes you think it's later in the day than it is, then you drive through a wall of smoke and hey, it's still clear and sunny out, then you turn around and go back into the smoke.

I noticed some of the cabbages had firm heads already so I picked a small one. It was almost 3 lbs, or 1.3 kg. Made a cabbage pie with half of it. Shredded cabbage, onion, carrot, parmesan, cream cheese, tomato, oregano, salt, pepper, 3 eggs, and mozzarella on top.

I've been using rayon or cellulose fiber cloths folded up this year. The swedish cloths were used in the past but they're quite a bit more expensive. I do put them between the boxes. It makes for extra work I guess since I'm not really pulling frames out of the lower box for any reason most of the time.

Yesterday I added boxes the big swarm that was caught and the small swarm that moved into the bait hive that I put in a nuc. I also put Oxalic OAE pads in both of those hives and gave them both a jar of food since it was bare foundation added.

I also saw the really fast skinny snake for more than a few seconds. It's probably a Western yellow-bellied racer. I've seen it by these hives a a few times and down the hill by the shed too. No pic.

I plucked and potted the last of the tomatoes and some cabbages tonight. All the tomatoes were ones that will just be extras but this will let me choose the best looking plants. Most of them could be put in bigger pots so that will probably happen soon. I also got a couple of eggplants to sprout.

What should you do when you have a bunch of broken $0.50 sprinklers? Spend several hours designing a replacement part which includes a stainless steel dowel. The winner was the 9th saved version but some of the versions had modifications. How is it different from the others? It copies the original design so it was slightly more complicated to make. A sweeping lofted square curve of sorts with a 135 degree bend in it.

This is the best scenario since most of the foragers would of went back to the other hive. I started seeing some new foragers in the last few days. Drones started flying 6 days ago.

The first radish is up, it's a French breakfast heirloom. They were planted 13 days ago along with the sugar snap peas, arugula, spinach, beets, and other radish types.

There have been 58 (F) growing degree days based on a 43F base mean temp here this year, which is more of a fruit tree blossom thing at that base temp, but it's what I keep track of. Accumulated degrees above that daily mean temp base.

Some even bigger than what I thought would be the biggest that I pulled a couple of days ago. They are Nantes Half Long, grown in a pot, and survived the hot weather, but were pencil sized in August. They taste good, very crisp.

Finally planted some garlic too, after removing some grass roots. It was 53F/12C today.

Picked all the winter squash today. 41 acorn squash that weighed 52 lbs / 23.5 kg. 8 butternut squash 17 lbs / 7.7 kg. Not all the acorn are probably ripe enough but they'll used up first. They were all washed and sprayed with white vinegar and sitting somewhere warm for a couple of weeks before they go off to the cold place.

Picked the first watermelon the other day. It was the one that first set this spring. The tendril was dry, the previous and past tendril was dry and brown, the yellow spot looked good, and it was just a little bit red inside and had no taste other than textured water. 🤣

Plenty more to pick in the coming days. The chickens don't let them go to waste, the 11 year old Australorp likes them.

Pulled a couple of eggplants out today, they were wilting from unknown, both on the north ends of their different beds so maybe just too wet or perfect conditions for whatever they have. They're on the burn pile now and I treated the area and other eggplants with Soil Blast.

I wonder if they didn't get some sort of leaf disease going from all that rain you had. Rust taking hold and then the heat can cause the scorched leaves. I'm not sure about the fruit drop but it makes me wonder if there is enough boron available. It's deficient here so it gets applied yearly but I know that's not the case everywhere.

Tomato, basil, and tomatillo update. It's all growing. ;) I've pruned some of the lower parts of some tomatoes but I'm leaving them kind of bushy on the trellis. Lots of flowers on the tomatillo. Lots and lots of basil which I've been letting flower then dead heading it. There are runner beans on both posts in the raised bed and they've made it to the top of the trellis.

They're probably the cheapest cost to cherry production and yet the most important. The worker has to pick more than 24 lbs. of cherries to be able to afford themselves to be able to buy just one pound. Peppers, eggplants, basil cuttings, and potted marigolds that haven't been replanted yet.

I'm actually really impressed how good the peppers are growing this year. Even the pathetic looking Jalapenos grew out of their root bound funk and look pretty good.

I put some of the basil cuttings I didn't pot up directly in the soil and that seems to be working ok so far.

Saturday garden photo thread. The squash and melons.

The melons are all doing good and the summer squash have got past their wilting stage but there is still some wilting on the winter squash if I don't give them a good soaking of water in the morning as it starts to warm up.

They always grow really good when you're not ready to plant them out. This is all the squash, cucumbers, and melons. Everything good except one watermelon pot and I put more seed in it tonight in case the half sprouted thing doesn't grow a true leaf. They were all planted about 2 weeks ago.

I finally got around to planting carrots in a pot. Nantes Half Long.The bottom soil is pretty dry so it's soaking in a tub overnight. I picked up the potted marigolds that were spread about the garden, I have 10 feet of them, or 22 plus 1 tomato volunteer and 1 clump of oregano. The two squash beds are ready for planting with most of the lumpy goose manure having soaked up the water and softened.

I'm still a week or more out from planting anything. I might have to up-pot some plants into gallon pots. I trimmed the basil and put some of that in water to root. Jalapenos are looking funky, might just be bad genetic plants, I don't need any hot peppers and these are extremely hot jalapenos and not the mild kind they were suppose to be. Sweet peppers look good. No tomato problems except lack of space.

Thinned the beets yesterday and planted some of those in 4 more rows. Looks like some will survive. It was really windy after I got done so they might have been flopping around some. No loss really.

Peas are growing more and the lettuce stumps are taking off again even with help from the chickens one day.

Peas, beets, radish, spinach, and arugula. I tasted a French breakfast radish the other day, it's like a spicy carrot but it was small too. I guess they're good on toast with butter and pepper. Warm low temps forecast for a week so everything should start growing more and I need to get those raised beds finished if the warm is going to continue.

Tomato progress. So far nice stocky tomatoes since I've been able to keep it cool. The round pots are a mix of my experimental soil that killed all but one of the peppers.. 🤣 and some more recycled soil. The saved Campari seed ones are doing good and might be far enough along to pick a winner. Might pull a few and transplant if I get to it soon. The tomatillo is doing good too.

The view into the pasture/orchard is a bit better since I chopped/dug out a lot of the poplar/cottonwood suckers on Sunday. More to take out but I needed a break from swinging the axe and dragging brush so today I moved 250 liters of dirt twice, 4 arm loads of wood, 220 liters of sticks, and 150 liters of leaves... oh and 15 minutes of slicing sticks with the chainsaw for that one raised bed.

The the grafted Spitz apple is starting to bloom now too.

More dirt added on top of the smaller wood and washed in. The woven poly barrier cut and pulled up on the insides and leaves added around the edges to hold it up. Then dirt was put around the edges, more small sticks in the middle, and finally a layer of dirt on top of everything.

Preparing the first new raised bed. I dug out all the better soil and I might dig it down more so I can mix that light colored soil with the wood. I need to cut the willow wood up a little too so it fits tighter. Willow and poplar tree roots will still be a problem but I guess I can dig them out still if needed. I don't want to bury any poly barrier and it wouldn't really be hugelkultur if I did.

The peppers are doing typical indoor pepper things. Last week it was getting humid in there so I opened it up for a couple of days to dry it out. A little bit of edema on some some peppers but it's all lower leaves that will die off anyway. There's a fan that circulates the air down when the lights are on and I have vents open now. Need to prune the geraniums more. Basil is doing great.

I was going to loop some cotton between two sticks, maybe cross it, for the peas, so I was measuring things.. then I went looking for some old bird netting I have.. but then I saw the half height plastic mesh fencing and one of them was ripped up so I decided to just use it.

Problem solved for now, probably new one created for later.

A 4 foot wide raised bed is a lot bigger than the 3 foot ones. I got the two pepper beds finished. They are each 8 feet long. Just need to open up the poly sheeting and and dig a bit of the good dirt out so it's flat or dished and then stack some sticks in the bottom, or cardboard, or both.

I planted a couple of lettuce stumps too that were regrowing in the lower right bed, and put some stakes next to some peas.
