"In 2025, the government estimated a 5-25 percent chance of a severe space weather event by 2030. However, according to the NAO, the UK is not well prepared. Despite severe space weather being added to the UK's National Risk Register in 2011, and some investment in developing the country's forecasting capabilities, the NAO warned that the government "does not yet understand the full range of possible impacts and cascading effects well."

It has also not "yet set out how resilient it would like the UK to be to severe space weather, nor what level of resilience its spending will provide."

G1 geomagnetic conditions continue today following the CME impact yesterday evening. Further storming up to G2 levels is possible as further small CMEs reach Earth over the weekend.

The solar wind speed is moderate at 400-500km/s and IMF field strength (Bt) is strong at around 25.7nT.

Aurora was visible at high latitudes. Amateur radio operators also reported auroral contacts at high latitudes.

I made a thing!

With the help of Claude AI, I made a new mapping backend for LiveMUF.

The entire thing — 3D WebGL renderer, ionospheric physics, signal animation, Es detection, MUF modelling, band matrix, 2D map, live database connection — fits in a single HTML file of about 3,000 lines. No npm, no webpack, no dependencies beyond D3 and TopoJSON loaded from a CDN. A helper file interfaces with the LiveMUF SQLite database and forwards spots to the map as they appear. I'll need to work on a version for MySQL. It currently only runs on a PC which already has LiveMUF installed and capturing spots to a local database.

It renders propagation paths in realtime, projecting the signal path via realistic estimated bounce points around the globe. Ionospheric height is correctly rendered. Glowing areas appear at the reflection points and show sporadic-E clouds, coloured according to frequency (but not yet directly linked to the estimated MUF).

I'll follow up with more videos.

The sun is spotless for the first time since 2022! This is definitely a sign that we're on the long slide back down to solar minimum. The official synoptic map is currently showing no active regions on the visible disc!

The calm may not last long as there are a number of active regions and unstable filaments on the far side and coming around the east limb. The radio bands are quiet now, but there's potential for filament eruptions in the coming days which will raise the radio noise and improve chances for aurora.

GOES-19's CCOR1 solar imager caught the moon dancing around the sun this morning, as seen in this timelapse.

Two far side CMEs are also visible, at 05h and 09h UT 18 Feb. A C1.5 flare occurred at the same time as the 05h CME but I couldn't find the source, so I assume it was off the limb.

The white flashes are likely caused by the limb of the Earth.

Geomagnetic conditions: Aurora has been visible at high-latitudes for a couple of nights. A new CME from AR4362 in the south-west quadrant (released by an M1.2 flare on 05 Feb) may impact Earth tomorrow 08 Feb. Twofurther minor CMEs, will likely cause disturbed conditions to continue through to 10 Feb.

CME update: NOAA (US) and Euphoria (European) solar wind models suggest the CME imact could be a little later than the early NASA model predicted.

NOAA suggests a double hit, initially late on 5th Feb, with a higher peak around midday (UT) on the 6th. Euphoria suggests a single hit during the morning of the 6th.

Solar Flares: There have been around 19 flares exceeding M level since 10h UT 02 Feb (yesterday). The largest was an M7.2 peaking at 07h UT 02 Feb.

AR4366 continues to be very active. It's looking a little less potent now but the potential for large flares continues.

Apologies to BSky readers who will see this message split over multiple posts.

My XRay Flux Colourgram has lit up like a Christmas tree over the last 24 hours, all thanks to active region AR4366. This region has gone bonkers with activity since it appeared a few days ago. The region is Beta-Gamma-Delta, meaning that X-flare activity was a possibility. It's lived up to the promise!

It's worth noting that flares peaks are denoted by the highest XRay Flux values. In this case, AR4366 has been continually eruptive. Tagging every peak to an explosive eruption may not be accurate in terms of saying "there were this many flares above a certain value". Ongoing eruptions can just cause the flux value to vary up and down. With the flux "floor" now up above M-level, I've only listed peaks above M2.

*A large radio burst and CME were observed with the X8.1 eruption. Earth may receive a glancing blow from the CME in a few days, so stay tuned for further updates.

HF radio conditions: Lower frequencies are feeling the effects of the high XRay flux with periodic blackouts between R1 and R3 on the daylight side. Conditions are likely to remain poor for the next week. Radio noise will be severe and may increasing during the next 3-5 days as further active regions rotate into view.

The fun is over for now, the solar storm has ended. The solar radiation storm has also reduced below S1 level this afternoon (UT), having reach up to S4 level.

It was a complicated storm because there were actually several CMEs launched, with the large coronal hole squeezing the trajectories. Space weather scientists will be pawing over the data for months to come!

What is clear is that things could have been a whole lot more exciting, because when the initial storm front hit us at 19h UT on 19 Jan, the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) Bz was strongly positive, at more than 55nT. This reduced the impact significantly, but had it been negative we could have been looking at numerous electrical grid outages, satellite disruption and more.

It wasn't until a few hours later that the Bz swung south for a long period, giving hours of stunning aurora stretching well into the mid-latitudes.

The flare is now down to M7.9, but is taking its time reducing. The Xray flux was above X level for just over an hour, with the flare peaking at X1.9 at 18:h UT 18 Jan.

Type II and type IV radio emissions were observed. A halo CME was observed, with the bulk going to the east. Modeling in the next 24 hours should determine roughly how much will reach earth. There's back-room talk of G4 strength storms, but it's a little early to determine yet.

The sun is deathly quiet this week with very little flare activity.

Geomagnetic activity is "Minor" to "Low". Some minor aurora was visible last night at high-latitudes. A G1 storm watch is in force for 18 Dec when the fast solar wind from a coronal hole is expected to increase activity.

The fast solar wind and reduced solar activity is causing issues for the HF radio bands which are mostly "fair" to "poor". The lower frequencies are a bit better, but not great.

Hearing about the sad loss of contact with the MAVEN spacecraft reminded me that following my visit to KSC to see the launch, I made a 45 minute video about my amazing experience.

Meeting such an amazing group of space enthusiasts was something that evoked an emotion that has never left me, and I will be with me for the rest of my life. You feel passion, joy and a very strong bond with these people.

"NASA has officially lost contact with a spacecraft that has been orbiting Mars since 2014.

"The MAVEN spacecraft – Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution – abruptly lost contact with Earth on 6 December 2025 while passing behind the red planet in the normal course of its orbit. When MAVEN re-emerged from behind Mars, however, NASA ground control was unable to re-establish a connection."

We're on geomagnetic storm watch from 00h UT tonight. A G3 storm is predicted, but some expect a brief period of G4.

Also keep an eye on the density and speed graph slightly down the page. The first clues of the CME's arrival will show on the Solar Wind Density and Speed indicators and graph. The spacecraft detecting these parameters (ACE and DISCOVR) are located at the sun-Earth Lagrange Point "L1", which is a gravitational balance point approximately 1.5M km towards the sun from the Earth. Once the CME arrives at L1, it'll be approximately 30-40 minutes before arrival at Earth at the estimated 930km/s of the storm.

Solar Flare Alert: An X1.1 flare from AR4298 in the far south-west quadrant of the solar disc peaked at 05h01 UT 08 Dec.

The flare caused a strong R3 radio blackout in the eastern Indian Ocean region.

This flare is not earth-facing and not much material was seen ejecting, so there is not likely to be a big geomagnetic storm on Earth from this event.

The CME from the M8.1 flare on 06 Dec is still directly inbound, expected during the first half of 09 Dec.

Update on X4.0 flare at 08h30UT 14 Nov.

The flare was of long duration with the XRay flux not reducing below M-level until 10h13 UT. A radio blackout affected HF radio in southern Africa for nearly 2 hours. "Radio blackout" is quite a broad term but it indicates a general degradation in signal quality from any flare exceeding M0 level, but the stronger the flare (based on the XRay flux level) the greater the degradation. The scale runs from R1 (minor) to R5 (extreme). An X4 flare is in the "strong R3" category.

A large CME can be seen in SOHO/Lasco C2 imagery lifting off to the west. A type II radio emission was also observed at the time of the flare. This CME is unlikely to cause geomagnetic storms on Earth.

Proton flux levels have increased, bringing back a minor S1 solar radiation storm.

Solar Flare Alert: A strong X4.0 flare from AR4274 peaked at 08h30 UT 14 Nov. An R3 radio blackout affected south-eastern Africa, Madagascar and Indian Ocean regions. A type II radio emission has been detected.

AR4274 is near the west limb so any CME would not be earth-directed.

Geomagnetic conditions appear to have fully calmed down now. The solar radiation storm has also ended.

As far as the sun is concerned, the XRay flux has been down at C-levels since the X5.1 flare two days ago. The NOAA SWPC G3 storm watch will expire at midnight UT, and a G1 watch will be in place for tomorrow (14 Nov), due to the possibility of sub-storms.

The are no big flare players on the solar disc once AR4274 rotates around the limb, so you can have a chance to recharge the camera batteries.

The CME from the X5.1 flare on the 11th arrived last night just after 20h UT. It had a strong northward Bz (magnetic) component. This initially cancelled out the Earth's magnetic field, so the CME impact and following couple of hours were pretty dull until the Bz finally swung south just after midnight (UT).

There then followed a few hours of geomagnetic storming reaching a maximum of G3 level. Sky News's ridiculous headline "NASA cancels space launch as strongest 'cannibal storm' in 20 years heads to Britain" sounds even more ridiculous now. Solar storms to not "cannibalise" other solar storms due to the way their magnetism interacts, and they don't head to a specific place. Geomagnetic storms can compress each other, fast storms can push slower ones and maybe wrap around them, but they do not eat them. The "cannibal storm" term has been traced to an unknown spokesperson at the British Geological Survey. Shame on you!

The launch of Escapade - a mission to Mars, was delayed: Nasa said "...due to highly elevated solar activity and its potential effects on the ESCAPADE spacecraft, NASA is postponing launch until space weather conditions improve".

Aurora (as reported by amateur radio operators) this morning reached as far south as ~54°N. It reached down to ~38°N over N America.

Geomagnetic conditions are still active but are calming down.

Just a quick note to say that the solar storms over the last couple of days have brought me a lot of new followers on Mastodon, so just a note to them to say "welcome to the feed", and I hope you enjoy it!

I'm a factual kind of guy with a sense of humour, not interested in the hype. My posts tend to be about space weather, amateur radio (I don't call it "ham" radio) and radio propagation, with other topics (like cats) occasionally floated in. I make spelling mistakes for a pasttime and posts will get edited (but edits don't always make it across to the mirror feed on Bsky). I also do try to respond to comments when appropriate.

Please don't push conspiracy theories at me. There's a special place for people who believe in that sort of nonsense, and it's not here.

The solar radiation storm has now reduced to S1 (Minor) level at 23h20 UT.

Geomagnetic storm conditions are continuing with so far a few effects at high-latitudes (minor-moderate substorms at Kiruna).

A "reverse interplanetary shock" was observed at 21h42 with an IMF field strength of -23nT.

CME Update: According to NOAA, the CME has hit us (my post about an hour ago with the Goes 18 data).

The problem is that the all-important Bz (magnetic) component of the storm is currently NORTH, and because that matches the magnetic field direction of the Earth the magnetosphere just goes "meh, whatever" and nothing much happens.

So now we wait to see if the field flips to south...
