I had a 75 mile loop planned starting in the Grand Valley, but after two nights in the high country I was concerned about the amount of wildfire smoke blowing out of the south and decided to change plans. Hiked out and headed for Third Beach instead. It was an amazing trip. I saw bears, swam in alpine lakes, enjoyed sunrise in the mountains, wandered the beach, and slept beside the ocean. There&#39;s a stretch that traverses a sandy hillside, basically at the angle of repose, and while I think it&#39;s objectively pretty safe (it&#39;s really not that steep) it&#39;s spooky as fuck because the runout is hundreds of feet down the slope to a cliff that drops to the valley floor.
