If you don’t have a compaction layer that needs breaking up, I wouldn’t dig there at all. It’s counterproductive.

Just add lots of organic matter to it, whatever you can find, leave it be and keep it mulched over the growing season to protect the soil.

As well as the home made compost I also have a bin of Korean Natural Farming IMO4 inside the shed, a worm bin at home in the garage and a bokashi bin to take any unwanted cooked food waste. And there’s a pile of leaf litter turning slowly into leaf mould.

Storm Bram cut short the day we had planned but he met up with a couple of his besties and let off some steam with them. Followed by them gorging on doggy Birthday cake of peanut butter, honey and yoghurt, a right gooey mess. He played non stop after that with his new toy until he zonked.

The allotment toots now are the last hurrahs of the year. But it is somewhere I go all year round because I can and it’s invaluable for my mental health.

The two palleted compost bays have been freshly turned.

Four compost Daleks contain maturing compost.

Another compost dalek recieves the weekly veg peelings and garden weeds with sawdust added over the top.

I will keep an eye out for any large dips in temperature. We’ve not had anything below -3°C as yet.

I’ve seen similar here with Afghan gardeners on their plots making larger square beds with earth banks to hold the moisture.

Not far from here there’s a farm that still practices a ridge and furrow system which goes back to medieval times. Winter crops are grown on the ridge tops out of the water. Then Summer crops are grown in the furrows to make the most of the rainfall.

Yes, it’s better to let nature work its magic. It saves you doing a job that’s unnecessary and is totally counter productive to nature and yourself.

I collect the excess leaves from the footpaths around here.

It makes the footpaths safer and less slippery underfoot and I’ll make a pile for 2027’s leaf mould and mulch the garden and/or growing beds with the rest.

It’s that time of year again. All that free mulch material to add for the worms to pull down into the garden soil and veg plot.

I have my wheelbarrow at the ready to start removing the leaves from the footpaths and paved areas around here.

The local traditions use whatever is most to hand in the landscape.

Not too far west of us is the start of Cotswold brash country and stone walls.

Here it’s hedge laying which sadly has been decimated by flailing or the hedges have been dug up completely or badly neglected.

Much of the hedge laying is being kept alive by local conservation volunteers. This hedge is likely their handiwork.

Six weeks after filling the comfrey press I’ve removed 1.5 litres of liquid comfrey extract and will refill the tube for making the next batch.

I’m impressed with it. Compressing the dry leaves makes this process go so much quicker. #Allotment #Gardening

Seed sorting out day. Bought seed packets are in the tubs. The envelopes and jars are of saved seed.

All the seed is of heirloom or open pollinated varieties. They have been dried on a windowsill and will be stored in a cool cupboard.

Seed companies in the UK tend to have clearance sales of their stock in Autumn. It’s possible to pick up some real bargains.
