There are 3 separate things to consider along with their lags, interactions with each other, and various feedback loops:

1. Greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere
2. Heat in the planet's systems (air, land, water)
3. Climate impacts.

As far as the atmosphere goes, the bulk of the human CO2 buildup is going to last for 300-1000yrs after we stop emitting without hacking the carbon cycle for active drawdown. That's one lag.

As long as the excess greenhouse gasses remain, heat is being actively trapped/added to the planetary system. Much of that heat goes into the oceans. (as does much of the CO2) but with deleterious impact of it's own: acidification, ecosystem impacts, weather & climate impacts, etc. So stopping emissions doesn't stop global warming. That's another lag.

And since the heat continues to build up - especially in the oceans (which will take a long time to be undone), climate impacts will continue to worsen. Another lag.

Then there's the interactions between all of those. for example, far too many people are unaware of the hard temperature limits of photosynthesis - the principle means by which plants draw down CO2 from the atmosphere. The laws of physics and chemistry mean that photosynthesis stops working once the ambient cell temperature reaches 100-110F in many plants (including most food crops).

And then there are the feedback loops. e.g. excessive heat evaporates water resulting in water vapor in the atmosphere. Water vapor is itself a very potent greenhouse gas resulting in more heat buildup in the terrestial system. Or rising global temperatures mean less snow and ice, so the albedo changes resulting in more heat absorbed by the planet, which is why arctic regions are warming 2.5x faster than equatorial regions.

All of these then impact the climate and weather in ever increasing and unpredictable ways like the ocean currents and jet stream slowing causing ever more drastic impacts.

While all this sounds dire, I do have hope and will now talk about things we can be doing that will have significant impacts on atmospheric CO2 levels which need to be reduced before anything can get better...

It takes far more courage to stare down the barrel of a gun while you’re armed with only a whistle and a phone than it does to point a gun at an unarmed protester.

Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.

The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. So many people in #VanLife groups putting their lives at risk with their #Solar systems. The problem is inverter size vs system voltage. People are running 3500W and even higher wattage inverters on a 12V battery bank. That's 300A of current!! Not only do the wires need to be massive, expensive, and hard to negotiate around curves, but at those current levels you'd need to constantly monitor the torque on the connections and any heat build up in the wires.

Every connection is going to have some resistance. The higher the current the greater the voltage drop/heat build up through that resistance. This then causes thermal expansion/contraction which will loosen those connections resulting in even higher resistance and heat. Note the positive feedback loop. There's very little room for error at such high current levels. the same process can happen with a poor crimp.

12V is fine up to 2kW. 24V to 4kW. Anything above that and you should just go 48V.

Jones was staying in Room 428 at the Residence Inn by Marriott in North Portland and had called down to the front desk to report a malfunctioning toilet.

Christopher Frison, a chief maintenance engineer at the hotel, arrived at Jones’ room about 5 p.m. on July 27, 2020, and knocked several times. Frison also called out “maintenance,” gave his name and waited, holding a plunger, he testified in court.

That’s when “Jones opened the door ready to defend himself and his room,” according to U.S. District Judge Adrienne Nelson’s 22-page opinion.

According to Frison, Jones was wearing a sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head when he “swung” the hotel door open, reached with his right hand behind his back and suddenly pointed a handgun at Frison’s chest. He said Jones held his gun in two hands, both arms outstretched.

“What the hell are you doing? What is going on?” Frison said he screamed. “All I could see was the white of his eyes. I could see the anger in his face. I wasn’t there as a threat. I was there as a maintenance worker.”

Frison testified that Jones pointed the gun at him for four to five seconds before uttering twice that he “f----- up.”

The judge found that Frison’s lawyers didn’t need to prove that Jones intended to shoot Frison or cause him physical injury. It didn’t matter if the gun was loaded or not, according to her opinion. It was clear Jones “intended” to place Frison in fear of imminent harm, she ruled.

“Simply put, that Jones opened the door quickly and pointed a gun at plaintiff is sufficient to establish defendant’s liability for civil assault,” Nelson wrote.

A device exploded inside the Goldenson Building in Harvard’s Longwood medical campus early Saturday morning, according to a message from the Harvard University Police Department to University affiliates. That's just it. Sodium Carbonate is the 6th most abundant element on earth 2.6% of the earth's crust. It's a very low impact to mine or extract - even from seawater. And the batteries can be made without copper or other rare, expensive, or toxic materials.

The lack of toxic materials means it's much cheaper & easier to recycle (although maybe the financial incentives won't be there - at least initially)

Compare that to rare, environmentally costly to mine lithium which is only 0.0017% of the earth's crust. Battery-grade lithium carbonate costs range from $10,000 - $11,000 per metric ton vs. $600 - $650 per metric ton of battery grade sodium carbonate. Lithium batteries are quite flammable leaving behind a toxic mess. Sodium ion batteries are quite stable and have a much wider operating temperature range. No more EVs petering out in cold temps.

Succulents will be fine, but any woody plant with new growth will lose a lot of water to transpiration. Heatwaves aren’t supposed to come until the new growth has barked over to keep water in.

Give thes plants and trees a deep watering NLT Wednesday or Thursday. Like 5 gal each. Enough to sink deep and remain available as surface moisture evaporates. Mulch will help too. When the leaves start wilting it’s already too late. But if they’ve been prewatered they’ll recover.

NYTimes: A nonpartisan government watchdog, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, also known as CREW, has sued the Trump administration for dismantling the Freedom of Information Act office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a complaint filed on Friday, the CREW lawyers called the action “arbitrary and capricious,” citing emails from the agency that read, “Hello, the FOIA office has been placed on admin leave and is unable to respond to any emails.” Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has gutted many of the department offices that communicate with the public.
