we can say its not a big deal because they are encrypted and all the server should know is which mailbox theyre put in and the ip addresses of the clients that connect, and that this is better than signal etc who have your phone number tied to it. but why overly simplify to the point of misrepresenting the technical reality?

to be honest that sounds kinda nightmarish and very manual config-y. i would rather have a system that has portable user data/key based identity. though that would be an incredible refactor for the fediverse and maybe is actually impossible to do now that things are underway
