🏙️ Over the past two years, Dunedin's city center has become greener and more biodiverse thanks to the installation of street-side planters.

🐞 This change, though modest, proves popular with a range of insects that have moved in even though the city center remains dominated by gray non-permeable surfaces.

🌇 This real-world example shows that urban dwellers with limited green spaces can still have a positive impact on urban biodiversity through the use of planters and raised garden beds.

🪴 The upgrade of Dunedin's George Street comprises three consecutively installed blocks, each with a slightly different theme. The first block is dominated by native plants, the second features more flowering species, and the third has a mixture of both.

🚗 Finally made it to the park, about an hour and a half northwest of Beaufort. Because there was an early cold wave coming all the way down south where I was, I chose to try out a "camping cabin." This is merely two rooms with beds. No water, but it did have a heater.

🌳 Got out to hike as soon as I could. When near the Neuse river, I came upon a huge Sweetgum. The base is about a meter/yard in diameter, one of the largest trees in this park, and rare for this species. Standing at the base, I could barely see the limbs and yellow leaves.

While in Beaufort, I wanted to support local businesses and - what luck! - I found an ice cream shop.

They had cookie dough (one of my favorites) and pumpkin pie flavors, among many other tempting flavors. Both very creamy and had that "chewiness" that comes from good quality.

10/10 Will eat there again. And again.

Small Town Resistor with Global Impact

🚗 I traveled next to Beaufort, NC, pronounced "bo fert" (unlike Beaufort, SC which is pronounced "byoo fert"). It has a little historic district. In that district is this house, where a man named Jacob Henry lived.

Henry was the first Jewish member of the North Carolina legislature in 1808, at a time when members were expected to take an oath agreeing to the "truth of the Protestant religion" and the "divine authority of the New Testament."

He resisted.

🗣️ After another legislator attempted to oust him, he made a speech that is now famous. In it, he
🔹 Agreed that if religious principles incompatible with freedom and safety of the state, then they should be excluded from being a representative
🔹 Stated that he did not know of any incompatibility among the many diverse religions then existing in the state
🔹 Wondered whether the oath was dictating modes of belief similar to the countries in Europe (which the independence movement recently fought against)
🔹 Confirmed he was supportive of government and his religion had taught him to act properly. Thus, there was no reason to keep him from his post.

✅ He was allowed to retain his post as a representative.

❌ The oath was then adjusted to apply only to leadership and was eliminated altogether in 1835.

His speech was soon referenced nationally, even globally, by other resistors, and is still to this day.

🦋 Just saw this ragged Gulf Fritillary, surviving to the end of the season. Not surprised to see it because I do two things:
🔹 Maintain late-blooming flowers for butterflies to feed on
🔹 Allow native Passionvine (Passiflora incarnata) to grow in a large area. This is the *only* host plant for the caterpillars of this species.

🐛 Back in the Spring, I actually saw a caterpillar on a Passionvine leaf. Could this be the same individual?

😋 I add myself to the natural interconnection, a consumer of the Passionfruit and spreader of seeds.

My mother's house has been a collection point for furniture, small items and "memorabelia" for a blended family, so months of planning have been completed to determine who gets what.

And here is the lesson reiterated: Older people have collected too much stuff that the younger generations do not want.

How bad can it be? Here's one of multiple large jars of coins. What were these kept for? The only current use I know is to give to young people to freak them out. I'm keeping 2 jars for Halloween.

🌻 A short stroll by #NativePlants on a path in my garden. It's a quiet misty morning, after a rain, with birds singing.

💮 When this was recorded in early summer, the large patch of butterfly weed flowers had gone by. Mostly on the left terraces, there were black-eyed susans, but also coreopsis and fleabane in bloom. Anise hyssop was beginning to flower.

🌼 Waiting in the wings for their show are goldenrod and beautyberry, maybe some thistle in there, for late season feeding. But I need to clear out some competion so they can grow.

🪷 Looks like I'll be getting gifts from local pollinators. First, I let locally native Maypops (Passiflora incarnata) grow in my #garden. Complex and beautiful flowers.

🐝 Then I enjoy Carpenter Bees, very important native pollinators, while they do their thing. The caterpillars of the Gulf Fritillary butterfly also eat the leaves as their sole source of food. So I enjoy those butterflies as well.

🥝 Later, when the fruit grows and turns purple, I get Maypops to eat with their tropical tartness. And I don't have to go to the store. Thanks, pollinators!

🍄 It has been raining off and on for days here and the daytime temperatures have been between 85F and 100F (29C to 38C), so I think these are an unusual appearance of the tropical traveler fungus Leucocoprinus birnbaumii.

🍄‍🟫 Also known in temperate regions as Flower Pot Parasol where it shows up more commonly.

Really stood out from a distance on our walk during a cloudy morning.

🦋 Over 40% of assessed species fell in numbers by 50% or more—and two dozen species suffered more than 90% losses.

🦋 "Butterfly habitat should be woven into all parts of our landscapes—farmland, utility corridors, solar arrays, bike paths, roadsides, natural areas, and backyard and community gardens—to provide homes for common and wide-ranging butterflies as well as rare and at-risk species."

Always trying to get a shot of Goldfinches but they are very skittish. Finally, when I'm far away, a trio, known in this #garden as The Marauders, pick seeds from Coneflowers while a Tiger Swallowtail feeds on a Shasta Daisy.

They should continue to have food through the early winter because I have made sure to maintain flowers and shrubs that will support them, like Beautyberry, Asters, and Thistles.

🐌 There was evidence of animal populations despite being an urban creek. Mussel shells and snails were abundant.

After about 30 minutes, I found what I was looking for. It was not doing so well. Maybe it had been a victim of people playing in the creek the previous day.

🦞 This is the Nashville Crayfish. Notice the long claws with orange tips with a black band. Also the "saddle" coloration on the carapace helps with identification.

🛶 We have River Keepers, but we need more Stream Keepers, people watching out for the creeks near their homes.

🔬 There are citizen science opportunities for young people, and habitats and rare populations to protect.

Check out the little waterways near you.

🦋 Horace's Duskywing caterpillars feed on Goldenrod, which I have. But there are other #Nativeplants that I should find nearby or grow to support a population: Dogbane, Buttonbush, Sneezeweed, and Boneset. A few of these are hosts to other Butterflies.

🐝 Before sunrise, a Bumble Bee sleeps on the mound of a Coneflower. That's dedication to the job. Gets up and starts working immediately.

🐛 Unbee-knownst, a caterpillar munches below. Probably a Geometer Moth caterpillar but haven't been able to get confirmation yet.

Good example of two ways insects interact with plants ecologically. Some eat them, other pollinate them.

Just in time for #NationalPollinatorWeek, the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation has released an important report related to butterfly conservation.

🦋 Notable Points

🔸Butterflies populations are declining rapidly.
🔸The major causes are pesticide use, habitat loss, and climate change.
🔸We can counter the decline by making sure that 🌱 host plants for caterpillars and 🌸 nectar plants for adults are available throughout the entire growing season.
🔸We should also stop using pesticides in locations butterflies live - including our gardens.
🔸Both of these will improve their resilience to climate change.

It's not complicated. We can do our part to help!

🐝 Sharp-tailed Bees don't have pollen collecting hairs. Don't need them because they lay their eggs in other bee's nests. (This is called being "cleptoparasitic".)

🐝 There have to be enough of their specific prey bees to keep their population going. But insect populations have been dropping for decades, so Sharp-tailed Bees can be very hard to find.

Needless to say, I was thrilled to see one in my garden on a cloudy day.

🦋 Yesterday there was a new species seen in my garden! A Zebra Swallowtail was on the butterfly weed. Striking colors. A little manic and hard to photograph with my phone. Will post a video over on my Peertube account soon.

🌳 This find is of particular interest because the life cycle of the Zebra Swallowtail includes its larvae eating a particular plant: The American Pawpaw.

❓ Where are these Pawpaw trees? If I find them, maybe I can conserve them somehow to maintain this butterfly species. This would be the first insect that I have tried to conserve whose lifecycle extends outside my garden.

😋 Not to mention that I can harvest their tasty fruit.

🥾 Looks like I have a little adventure ahead this summer. Until then, I'll keep moist soil available for males to get nutrients for reproduction.

On my afternoon walk, I thought I saw one of the plastic predator bird statues on a suburban fence. Wrong. It was an actual hawk, probably waiting for a rabbit to appear.

I'm guessing from size and color it is a red-shouldered hawk. Also, there is a deciduous forest and river nearby - their favorite haunt.

Elizabeth Lawrence and Elizabeth Clarkson were contemporaries. They both lived in Charlotte when they made their biggest impact.

🌼 Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, is that they lived on the same street, not far from each other!

🌈 Both the properties have been joined now as the Wing Haven Garden & Bird Sanctuary.

Very soon, I will be visiting there and will post about that visit here as a continuation of this thread.

Two Elizabeths 🧵 2/3

Elizabeth Clarkson (1904-1988) helped found the Mecklenburg (County around Charlotte, NC) Audubon Society.

🦉 She kept a daily journal listing every species of bird she saw in her garden for years. In 1944, this information was compiled in "Birds of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina".

☠️ In 1948, Clarkson documents the effects of DDT on birds and succeeds in having the spray halted in Charlotte. The city eventually resumes spraying, but agrees to avoid her street. (It wasn't until 1962 that Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring about the effects of DDT.)

🐦 In 1971, Clarkson forms the Wing Haven Foundation, Inc. to protect her garden and the birds that reside and visit there. A year later, the EPA bans DDT.

Two Elizabeths 🧵 1/3

Elizabeth Lawrence (1904-1985) was the first female graduate of the very first Landscape Architecture program ever taught in the South. She moved to Charlotte, NC already an award-winning author and practicing landscape architect, and started on her "living laboratory" to determine what grew well in the South. That research fed her writings for 35 years.

📙 Among her numerous writings are over 700 columns for the Charlotte Observer. Five of her books remain in print. She received many awards.

🌻 The garden still exists. The layout and most of the plant material remains original to her.

✅ In 2005, the Elizabeth Lawrence House & Garden is entered into the Archives of American Gardens with the Smithsonian Institute.

✅ In 2006, the Elizabeth Lawrence House & Garden is entered in the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places.

🏆 She is regarded as one of three preeminent figures in the horticultural history of the Southeast, sharing this short list with Thomas Jefferson and J.C. Raulston. She is also listed among the top twenty-five gardeners of all time.

On my tour of the Pelican NWR, saw these Beggar Ticks attracting butterflies. Previously treated as native plants, evidence (including DNA) is piling up that they are not. Probably just as well.

They are found in disturbed areas, such as the maintained trail I was walking on.

🦋 Saw many Great Southern Whites feeding. Their caterpillars feed on Mustards, Peppergrass, Saltwort, and Sea Rocket. They are found in coastal scrub, saltwater marshes, and dunes. Unusual coloration on the body.
