Punting on football for a while

I am a pretty big football fan and have been for most of my life. Yet last night, after another excruciating loss by one of my favorite teams, I came to the realization that I don’t enjoy watching my teams anymore, whether they win or lose. That led me to the decision to take a step back from my football fandom.
A brief history: ever since my early teens I have been a fan of the Texas Longhorns and the St. Louis Los Angeles Rams. I’ve experienced the absolute highs, a National Championship for the Longhorns in 2005 and two Super Bowl wins (2000 and 2022) for the Rams, and the absolute lows, the Charlie Strong and the Jeff Fisher eras respectively. Recently, both of my teams have been contenders, which means I should be a much happier fan. Except I’m not.
The problem with me as a fan is, I’m too invested, and I care too much. It’s gotten to the point where I am nervous before the game, miserable the entire time I am watching the game, and finally, distraught if we lose or already nervous about the next game if we win. There is no joy anymore for me. I seem to be incapable of having the proper perspective (you win some and you lose some) about both teams. Which is why I decided that I need to make a change in my fandom.
Going forward, at least for this season, I will no longer live and die by how my teams do. I will accomplish this by not watching most if not all of the games live, I can check the score once the games are over. Not watching football will also give me more time to spend with family and on my other hobbies that do bring me joy. I think removing myself from the grind of being so emotionally invested in the play by play of each game will bring me much needed relief. Hopefully, I can eventually get to the point where I can watch my teams play again, without being miserable, but that time is not now. A break is what is needed.

https://whatsacomputer.com/posts/punting-on-football-for-a-while
