We headed out into the forest to shoot auroras and had a wonderful show. My guests couldn&#39;t believe it. We woke them at 11:30pm and said we&#39;re heading out to shoot. I wasn&#39;t sure about making that call, but Shellie gave me a nod to do it anyway. So glad I did. <br/> <br/>These folk have travelled across the world to photograph auroras, and we&#39;re doing our best to make that possible. Most of Arctic Norway and Sweden and Finland is under cloud cover tonight, and the solar winds forecast was negligible. But like I said, a dozen little things turned in our favour. <br/> <br/>We have a really good rain shadow and tonight it delivered again. Clear skies. And we&#39;re right under the aurora oval, so even a KP 1.6 can generate a decent show. <br/> <br/>Plus Shellie&#39;s reminder that, yes we&#39;re here to wake them in the middle of the night and say &#34;get dressed!&#34; Plus the zillions of generous things our friends here have done to make it possible to run this kind of workshop. <br/> <br/>I&#39;m rambling now. We had a nice day out earlier, and then a marvellous few hours shooting aurora by moonlight. There was one wave come through that filled the entire sky from East to West, North to South. Everyone did well. The second night we went harder, and ventured into the forest on a quiet little trail. <br/> <br/>Under the moonlight we captured the fresh snow and frost that blanketed everything in white. A gentle moment from earlier this evening, before the disco lights came on. <br/> <br/>We trudged our way through the snow to a corner of a lake, and admired the view. Just a hint of aurora in the early evening. Enough to make the trip worthwhile. <br/> <br/>For the next three hours we waited out on the lake. Experimenting with cracks in the ice. Waiting for a big aurora show. And we waited, then waited some more. There&#39;s a point at which we get too cold or too tired. Or both. We have to get up early tomorrow, so at 10pm we headed back to the car. <br/> <br/>On the winding roads, covered in ice and snow, we enjoyed a little warmth from the engine. And through the windscreen watched yet another big show of nordlys kicking off in the sky. We&#39;d missed them by maybe 30mins. <br/> <br/>We had a good laugh about it. I picked this one from the same time of night, to match the other two 10mm shots in this thread. <br/> <br/>I am struggling with editing these, because the colours are so intense. It looks un-natural, as though they are doctored. Yet I&#39;ve backed off the saturation by double my usual amount. It really is an intense display when the big ones zip over head. <br/> <br/>What colours are real? The camera is seeing a lot more colour than our eyes do. We did see the red and greens in the night, for sure. At times the sky was like daylight, but green and red. If you tinker with white-balance you can push those reds into purple, and the brighter greens into yellow hues. It&#39;s shot with a 10mm fisheye, so it&#39;s more than 180° of view from top to bottom. That burst of corona above the fjord is directly above my head, and then continues behind me to the south. Just wanted to share something right away, because it&#39;s a little bit exciting. <br/> <br/>I wasn&#39;t in the mood to head out and shoot tonight. I was tired to the bones after yesterday&#39;s outing, and the thought of leaving our cosy cabin to stand in the cold just in case things kicked off was marginal at best. But the satellite data was pretty convincing. And I knew a half decent spot to shoot from, about 10mins drive away. <br/> <br/>I grumbled and made a fuss and got in the car and stood out there. Buzzed a buddy and he came to join too. And then it went off like a frog in a sock. Maybe the second best aurora of the season so far. Just a few ribbons at first in the south, then a beautiful band that started in the East and reached right across the horizon to the west. We have no sun for another four weeks at least, but instead we get to play with moonlit nights. It&#39;s pretty dark for an F2.8, but on a night like this that don&#39;t matter. <br/> <br/>Sharing this screenshot from my editing. note that the only treatments applied were to tweak the curve to lift the shadows a little. This has not been super saturated. The moonlit nights give you intense colours on camera. The naked eye did not see this level of colour, although some of the bright moments you definitely can see the green. You see ripples moving across the sky in this footage, and the colour shifts. Some auroras barely move at all, others on this night were racing much faster still. They vary a lot. But hopefully this footage conveys the dynamic nature of auroras. <br/> <br/>The other thing this footage demonstrates is the different between still photos and video. A 4sec exposure for the stills, versus 1/25th of second for video. This was shot on a Lumix S9 with an F2.8 lens and ISO 128000. The wider the lens, the more you diminish the events in the sky. The narrower the lens, the less of the action you get in the frame. <br/> <br/>And then there&#39;s a question of how close you push elements of the scene into the foreground. The lens choice also plays with the perspective. Am sure a few of the more dedicated landscape photographers here can attest to the tendency for ultra wide lenses to make an otherwise magnificent mountain range look small and trivial. <br/> <br/>Would love to see what other folks here are doing with the fish-eye perspective. Was about 1/200th at F8 and ISO 2500. A touch of editing in Capture One. Not much required, just lift the white point a little to give a bit of pop and in my case I lift the blacks as well to make the dark edges a little softer. Did you even know that this little bird existed? It&#39;s a Rufous-vented Tit and they love the higher elevations in Bhutan. They rumble through the lower shrubs in packs, munching on seeds and looking for anything more juicy that might be hiding amongst the foliage. <br/> <br/>These guys happened to flitter close enough to me to get that 500mm into action. Had just finished dodging some yaks when they came along. I enjoy these unplanned encounters with nature so much.
