It look like at least on my server, the answer to the question of whether new followers can search old posts is no they cannot. I tested by searching an account I started following a few months ago and I cannot search for any posts from that account before I started following except for those that I personally boosted.

So, assuming it's the same on all servers, if you follow yourself from another server you will only be able to search for new posts you make going forward.

Whether you can search from your server depends on whether your server admin has enabled the search service. If the search service is enabled, all you need to do is add from:me to your search query to search your own posts.

My understanding is that people on other servers can search your posts if your account settings have made them discoverable. They would do this by adding from:(at)account(at)server to the search query.

Posts are discoverable for your followers if the privacy setting on a post is set to Public and not "Quiet Public"/Unlisted. Posts are also discoverable for non-followers if you have enabled the "Include public posts in search results" setting under Preferences -> Privacy and reach. This appears to be off by default on Kolektiva if my Kolektiva alt is any indication.

Finally, a quirk about how Mastodon works: Posts will only be searchable from a server if that server has actually seen that post, which it will have only if you have at least one follower on that server or someone boosted the post who had at least one follower on the server. Servers do not pull posts from other servers if there's no one to show the post to on that server, and do not retroactively pull old posts for new followers. So, if you're going to create an account on another server for this purpose, I would make sure it's on a server where you've consistently had at least one follower for an extended period. I'm not sure if new followers can retroactively search for old posts at all, but to give it the best chance of working it would need to at least been on a server where you already had another follower when the post was made.

Back in 2019 a group of devs tried to fork the project with a less awful name (Glimpse) with a stated goal of improving the UI/UX and generally making the app more accessible, and the devs were maligned and harassed for it, and the project basically got driven off the internet.
