Here's the horror show at my community garden that I described several days ago. The "tilled" section has been plowed and looks weed free and inviting. But in reality the lawn of common mugwort that was previously there has just been broken up into thousands of little clumps, soon to reestablish in areas of the garden that previously didn't have it. Yes, though if you have weeds with rhizomes it doesn't hurt to leave them on hard ground for a few days so that they can desiccate a bit before being tossed in. When space in my garden is tight I like to dig the holes with a post-hole digger. Then I can have a 36" pit ... and not even mint is going to escape that depth.

At my community garden one can choose to be on the tilled side or the non-tilled side. I chose the latter because I can use it year-round (e.g., I sow peas and fava beans in February). But the photos below provide the other big reason: common mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). When you have a lawn of this, the very last thing you want to do is plow — every single one of the thousands of rhizome segments will survive and thrive. As some of you know, a Mississippi pesticide company sued me in 2019 over my negative review of its scam device, the Spartan Mosquito Eradicator. That litigation ended this year when the judge threw out the case on the merits. But given the legal system in the United States, the company wasn't forced to pay the substantial legal fees I'd racked up. So I filed a malicious prosecution claim. Well, this week I received a settlement check that fully covers my costs. Next on my to-do list: get the EPA and FTC to investigate the company for fraud. Once you have a supply of Mosquito Dunks, use them to make "Buckets of Doom" for your yard. Mosquitoes will oviposit into these containers and their larvae will die. Everyone should have a supply of Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits. The former are donut-shaped cakes of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), a strain of bacteria that kills mosquito larvae (use in bird baths, rain barrels, etc.). The latter has the Bti toxins (but not live bacteria) and can kill larvae within minutes if you are impatient. Buy some for the neighbors.
