I am not picking on anyone, but here's some advice that can save your life: after a natural disaster (flood, hurricane, earthquake etc.) never ever go into dirty water or climb or walk across debris fields without wearing proper long sleeves and trousers, sturdy clothing, safety shoes, gloves etc. Basically everything is contaminated by damaged septic tanks and all kinds of dirty spikes, rusting nails and shards. Even a nick that draws a mere drop of blood can lead to tetanus or worse if you wade in water or hurt yourself touching or stepping on something. For the same reason avoid beaches the first few days after typhoons. Please don't wear sandals and shorts for this. When I was working in up in the north of Japan in March and April 2011 so many people around me ended up in emergency wards with tetanus, both locals and well meaning volunteers.

In 2025, 678m of The Haga Forest Railway in Shiso, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, was restored from scratch, by local volunteers: retirees and high school students who without any special training or skills restored the trackbed, laid the ballast, sleepers and rail track, by hand or with small diggers they borrowed from local contractors. Relying on their own labor, they could finance the whole build with small grants from the local government and a small crowdsourcing campaign. When they were done they borrowed a diesel engine and some cars from a municipal storage facility, restored them and started running it for tourists and locals. Other volunteers built a small station building and engine shed, another group organized the trees and vegetation around the track for a more beautiful and scenic route.

When we build something, like a doorframe or entrance, we are faced with nearly infinite choices in materials, form, colors, shapes, etc. This dilemma is usually solved by striving for agreement, based on individual decisions that accumulate over time and history and shared judgments: we form culture and culture forms us. And every time we build something we make—or are forced to do so—a choice. Even unconsciously, humans are want to assign meaning to every choice they make, no matter how insignificant. Because we are rational beings. However, in architecture, modernism doesn't work as a style or fashion: it is an ideology. It muscles in that gap between infinite options and rational meaning. "You can only chose me", it says, and here is why. It even comes with an arsenal to launch at those who defy it: "You are uneducated, uneconomical, kitsch, pastiche, slavish copy, reactionary" and so on, even though all of these things can be said with even increased accuracy on an ideology masquerading as a style among others, based on the ideas of a group of men in Weimar in the first years of the 1920s. Imagine this situation with a builder in the 1880s, the 1910s, or the 1420s? Impossible. Modernism (or its proper name in architecture, lInternational style" is not a style like Baroque or Rococo or Art Deco, it is an ideology.

When we build a home we are faced with trade-offs. We can use our savings or we can take out a mortgage. We can pay someone to do it for us or we can build it ourselves. Same goes with materials and how we source them. Our ancestors mostly didn't have these choices, they had to do with what they had at hand, or simply do without. Thankfully, they figured it out and we can learn from them. Thanks to modern tools, handbooks, educational videos and global friendships, many of their methods and techniques are eminently possible for us to pick up. It takes a lifetime to master (for example) thatching, but an apprentice can thatch a roof well enough to charge money, with a patient master overseeing the work. Or you can learn it yourself, from videos and handbooks by starting small (thatch a chicken coop or a play house for the kids). You won't be able to do it well enough or fast enough to get paid, but you can do it well enough for yourself. The same goes with materials. You can order wheat straw or reed or palm fronds and have it delivered from anywhere in the world. That will save you a lot of time of course, but it isn't cheap. Or you can harvest your own materials if you have them growing nearby, or if not, start by growing them (you can buy a few kilos of thatching wheat seeds online for example). It all depends on your circumstances, how much time you want to spend on it and so on. Obviously, when I say that it is technically possible to build a beautifully charming and robust thatched roof costing you nothing at all, I am not saying that it makes commercial sense at all. It doesn't. When I sell hand harvested thatch my customers are paying for the ultra high end of quality because I can pick the highest quality thatch in the world and deliver it to the exact specifications of the highest paying customers in the world. There is no way you can win on volume in the exciting world of thatch harvesting. I enjoy discovering how our ancestors built environmentally friendly sustainable homes without a mortgage and without waste. And I use this account to share this with anyone else interested. If your dream was to live in a cob cottage like Thomas Hardy or a Georgian townhouse or a solid timber cottage with grass roof or a cool Nubian vaulted homestead, it might be impossible to find or afford a mortgage for it, but it isn't impossible if you are willing to learn the skills necessary to do parts of it yourself. And most likely you will end up with something that will endure without wasting.

Japanese alcohol can be an acquired taste so even if you get a small bottle chances are you won't finish it in on sitting. Opened sake starts going bad but will keep far far longer (months!) if you take basic hygiene precautions when handling the cap or cork or bottle top. Never ever touch the inside of the cork with your bare hands or let it rest on a table. Always wipe it down with a clean cloth or rinse it under water or even apply disinfectant to it before replacing. Nothing kills sake like bacteria. You can buy special openers to allow you to handle the corks safely, but it isn't necessary. Or you can just get enough interested friends together to finish the whole bottle in one go. As intended.

It is influenza season. In children, abnormal behavior and delirium is a fairly common occurrence during and directly after illness. Every year there are cases of fatal accidents which is why doctors recommend to never let children with influenza sleep or stay alone, and that windows and doors and balconies are carefully locked. If possible precautions should be taken to nurse sick children on the ground floor of houses and with temporary childproof locks. Parents should sleep in the same room but with head positioning as far away as possible and wear masks (not the child). Ventilation should be rapid and frequent but windows should only be opened while the child is carefully watched. Delirium can be sudden and even small children can move fast. Even a single accident is too tragic to be contemplated. Parents beware.

This year's ginnan fruit harvest has been the worst I can remember. Almost no trees had any fruit in Tokyo this year and the ones who did had only a couple of handfuls. The reasons for this are unclear, I can't find any literature on the subject.
