This time in random gear I found on campus: the monochromator that was used to make the first x ray photo with an accelerator!

You’ve probably seen a prism split light into a rainbow. X-rays can be split the same way with a crystal monochromator instead of glass.

In August 1970, right here at DESY, physicists Gerd Rosenbaum, Kenneth Holmes and Jean Witz fitted a quartz crystal monochromator onto our synchrotron beam and captured the first-ever X-ray diffraction picture using synchrotron radiation: of a strip of insect flight muscle. That first smudgy image kicked off the entire field of using particle accelerators for structural biology, and eventually gave DESY its own EMBL outstation.

The antique monochromator in this video is a real piece of that history.

In super rare cases, the collisions in the large hadron collider are not between protons or ions, but between photons! (because those protons&ions sometimes create photons. #CMSPaper 1398 is a meta-analysis of CMS results with Higgs bosons, Z and W bosons, and top quarks. It is interpreted in the Standard Model Effective theory looking for subtle changes with respect to the standard model predictions that are seen over more than one signature arxiv.org/abs/2504.02958

We are always looking for new particles that we can use to study the quark gluon plasma. This #CMSPaper shows the phi meson (a bound state consisting of a strange quark and strange antiquark) is quite a useful "hard probe" (I know, jargon) to measure the QGP in an extra way arxiv.org/abs/2504.05193

#CMSPaper 1395 observes a totally unexpected extra behaviour of #topquark pair production; we see significantly more top quarks than we expect, and they kind of behave like they come from something particle-like. We are reluctant to just call it Topponium, but very exciting! arxiv.org/abs/2503.22382
