I actually don't know about facebook personally, it is possible they've got exclusively external vendors doing all the logistics, security, part swapping, etc on site, that's possible, but that still means there are 500-1500+ people working onsite every day and that's not going to change.

look, I'm not saying colo hosting and smaller setups are invalid, but sending everything to a third party is both extremely costly and extremely inefficient at scale, it means you're constantly shipping entire machines about.

At 100 to maybe 400 machines that's perhaps doable if 0.1% breaks every day, but if you have 1000+ and ship entire servers to dell every time you have to replace a harddisk or a stick of ram it gets really hairy

A single rack is ~-42-52U, 2 racks can hold 100 1U servers, that's not complex math. 500 servers can totally fit in 10 racks. Or are you talking exclusively about servers larger than 4U? And that's talking standard EIA racks, if you use e.g OpenCompute you can go way more dense.

even when you have systems that automatically order a new HDD or stick of RAM when it starts having issues, you still end up dozens of cases that don't make sense.

30 people covers maybe a small colocation site, but an actual datacenter has hundreds if not thousands of people working there.

you need electricians, plumbing and mechanical engineers, people diagnosing broken servers, network equipment, building out new equipment, swapping parts, logistics, security, kitchen personnel, cleaning, managers, etc etc. It doesn't run itself.

1) Cat is just a rating for 'capable of xxx mhz'. It doesn't say anything about the material. Copper > CCA.

2) Many 'Gamer Cat7+' cables are not certified; essentially fake.

3) A *good* Cat5e cable is capable of 1gbit at 100(!) meters and maybe 10gbit often up to 30-40 meters.

4) Consider EMI; Don't ziptie your Ethernet to your Power cabling, that'll always suck.

it seems the aurora has subsided already, I haven't seen much of it in the last hour, I do still see a faint shimmer on the horizon but nothing like the clear moving sheen across the sky that I could readily see with my unadjusted eyes and capture with simple photos

It's interesting to see, that must've been really fast moving particles from the solar storm, usually it takes longer for these to arrive, I'm guessing we'll see more intense auroras in the next few hours/days, keep an eye out!

- press SUPER (win key) + T
- you'll see the panes that you can divvy your screen up into. make panels as you please.
- grab a window by pressing super + mouse key (you can press anywhere on the window for this, not just the titlebar)

I would echo this sentiment, for most things it is objectively better than Windows these days.

but as much as I hate to admit it, having e.g the right creative tools available is important too, and if you want truly everyone to switch, it does mean that some people have to sacrifice some comfort, tools, and even hardware

That said, I definitely think it's worth it to still do it, because in the end, if everyone switches we'll get an open ecosystem that'll bring that all back and more

I’m a huge believer in solar/wind. It’s exciting how fast they’re growing. My home batteries + panels almost get me off-grid... in the summer. But not winter.

This is where Nuclear makes sense.

While solar suits homes, heavy industry less so, and e.g steel/cement needs massive constant power AND high heat.

Why?
- Discover etc actually update your Flatpaks and Snaps too, apt/dnf/etc don't do this, and this actually seems like a widespread issue somehow

the best thing about hosting your own server, is watching other social media platforms (and also fedi servers) catch on fire and explode over silly avoidable drama, while you don't even have to try to keep whatever you don't like out of your domain.

#Selfhosting is super easy. In fact I'd say the hardest part is to *not* touch it. You should put it somewhere on some device you can also avoid touching. Only do updates (and preferably automate those), then your server is basically indestructible.

But I also think the brilliant thing here is that it doesn't have to be complicated, neither for the user nor codebase:
- Fedi already uses per user keys, just not for encryption
- you could make the entire thing optional with some checkboxes in your settings somewhere.

I think DMs as is are also fine, they could just be improved; they're already just as secure and private as messages on Discord, Telegram (unless you use their e2ee mproto thing which literally nobody does), Slack, Teams, etc etc.
Most things don't have end to end encryption. You are still using HTTPS encryption towards and from the server. The main issue is if you e.g accidentally mention someone you didn't want to mention, because they get pulled into the conversation hah

And aside from the performance objections, I think mastodon/fedi is a bit weird in that sense. If you e.g make a followers-only account and only ever post followers-only interactions, you can technically make a little "private circle", social media style group chats, which COULD be secure, if MLS was there. I see some understandable concerns with the potential implementation of MLS (Messaging Layer Security) in the fediverse, because it would make moderation harder.

The thing is, while it's an understandable concern, if you simply replace the word "moderation" with "law enforcement" you'll understand why Chat Control exists.

And while I totally get where both come from, if you want security and privacy to work, I simply think there ought to be a limit to it. Otherwise you simply cannot have them.

But Discord is not unique in this unfortunately. And companies that have tried to stand up against it, and had 'warrant canaries' showed multiple times they too get targeted, and sued into silence.

unfortunately it seems the battery and other connectors are completely different, with this one just using wire clamps, and a smaller M6 nut for the battery terminals.
