Want to message someone in a Russian prison? There’s now an app for that. It costs about three rubles per text, once the censor signs off.

An ad for a messaging app called “Tochka Kontakta” (“Point of Contact”), designed for communicating with prisoners, has appeared on the ZT service’s website. The human rights organization First Department flagged the ad. The ad links to a separate website laying out the new app’s features.

It has long been known that the Russian messenger Max is an unreliable and even dangerous service that constantly spies on its users. But IT specialists continue to find new vulnerabilities and surveillance tools in the app. In mid-May, a user of the IT site Habr shared the results of his own analysis of Max for Android. He not only confirmed previously known information but also revealed previously unknown features of the app. Some of them — such as the ability to disable all encryption on a messenger conversation with a single command — are fairly alarming. Meduza explains what else has come to light about Max and how many people are now using the platform.

Italy’s visa centers in Russia, VMS and AlmavivA, stopped accepting applications submitted through third parties as of May 12, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) reported.

In Russia’s Kemerovo region, cattle are being culled, and checkpoints are being set up around farms and agricultural facilities. According to the official version, the cows are being euthanized due to a skin disease. Unofficially, however, sources say it may be foot-and-mouth disease, an acute viral infection that has also been detected in cattle in the Novosibirsk region.
