Here, we’ve got a May 1985 tape of Ron, Jim and ace pianist Tommy Flanagan at the hilariously named Struggles jazz club in Edgewater, NJ. I’m a huge fan of the Carter / Hall collab LP Alone Together, and even with Flanagan in the mix, the vibe here is similar: breezy and relaxed, maybe, but not without a deadly focus and a high level of sneaky virtuosity. No one out of the three is really taking solos; they’re moving together as one, circling the melodies, playing around with the rhythms. No struggles detected!

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/810709530594902016

Clydie probably should’ve written a book, she must’ve had plenty of stories to tell. Alas, she passed away in 2019. But some enterprising label should figure out a way to release this album of hers — it’s more than good enough for a wide audience.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/808811554546089984

A necessary cause, now more than ever. Some familiar names in here, some unfamiliar, but it’s all sounding excellent, eclectic and well worth your hard earned cash. Stay tuned for two more volumes!I’ll hand it over to the two Mikes for the final word: “This is not an ordinary benefit compilation. The Perilous Fight is a collective statement of solidarity—a response to the escalating rhetoric, intimidation, and violence shaping daily life in communities across the country. The contributors are everyday Americans using music to speak out against cruelty, authoritarianism, and the atmosphere of fear fostered by the current administration. This first volume is largely instrumental. These are artists are expressing their voice through their instruments.”

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/808086595295199232

The complete recording, made by the legendary critic/A&R man Paul Nelson (who you can hear providing commentary at times), does not disappoint. In fact, it may well be the best overall OG Modern Lovers live performance we’ve got. As the above poster shows us, the gig was headlined by the then-ascendant New York Dolls, but apparently Johnny Thunders heard the Lovers soundchecking and refused to follow them. Thus, the band took the stage well after midnight. But Jonathan Richman, Jerry Harrison, Ernie Brooks and David Robinson (and maybe John Felice?) certainly don’t sound tired; rather, they’re revved up like the proverbial Roadrunner out on Route 128, delivering a powerful, inspiring 50-minute set chock full of classics. This is the good stuff, people, miraculously beamed in from the old world. <img src="

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/807816726412754944

It’s got all the stuff I’ve loved about previous WW releases, plus plenty of added attractions, exploring woozy shoegaze zones (woozegaze?!), getting into Murray Street-era Sonic Youth situations (hey, Steve Shelley is in the band, it comes naturally) and plenty more uncategorizable areas. It’s great, and as I say in the review, it really sounds like a band, individuals coming together for the greater good. And that’s what it’s all about, right? Winged Wheel just wrapped up their first European tour a few weeks back. They went hard, with more than a dozen dates in a row — no nights off! And judging from a nicely shot video from the Paris gig, it all paid off. The band soars effortlessly through the set, guitars intertwining, violin droning, rhythm section driving. The whole thing is capped off by a glorious version of Neil and Crazy Horse’s “Danger Bird,” flying above the city of light like a shadow on the sky.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/807635014267322368

It’s really an art, and it’s very orchestral in that way, because you’re paying attention to dynamics. I would tune all 12 strings to different pitches, have not only just unisons or octaves. I try to make every note have a reason for existing. It’s really fun to put that all together. It’s magical but difficult.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/806457121295286272

Released by the Pre-Echo label, Blue Abstraction gathers eight pieces recorded by Williams on her prepared piano, as she uncovers new tonalities, buzzing percussive elements, weird harmonics, beautiful melodies. An ideal mix of avant-garde approaches and pure playfulness; there are moments that suggest a collab between Thelonious Monk and John Cage. But most of all, you get a sense of Williams as a singular personality, a unique creative force. She described these recordings as “my self encoded on a chrome oxide surface [audio tape].” That sounds exactly right.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/804915199031279616

Here’s a quick bootleg roundup from the past 12 months … https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/801372562277990400/bob-dylan-bangor-municipal-auditorium-bangor

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/803818679666114560

Under the Far Sound moniker, Pedrosa lets his imagination go in a variety of directions — all of them pretty awesome. On the latest release, To Heart, To Earth, Morricone-esque desert noir soundscapes brush up against free-form drifts. From the latter category, I especially love “Reach Back and Grab Something,” the pedal steel / drums duet with Rose City Band’s John Jeffrey, the sonic equivalent of a tumbleweed rolling happily through a barren landscape. Far out sound.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/803646802304909312

Shot in Colorado’s harsh/beautiful San Luis Valley and starring man-of-the-hour Josh O'Connor (who seems to be in every other movie this year, including the new Knives Out installment), it’s an understated gem, both quietly devastating and ultimately uplifting. And its soundtrack is an understated gem as well, made by Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington, two longtime Doom & Gloom faves . You could place its simple, rustic ambiance alongside other rustic OST masterworks as The Hired Hand or Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid; similarly, Fussell and Elkington conjure up the lonesome, wide-open spaces of the west without romanticizing them or falling prey to cliche. Great as accompaniment to the movie, but also just as great all on its own.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/803012525777125376

It is very specific material with specific parameters. There are ways everyone’s encouraged to explore and use their sound and use their musicianship so that we can get to new places. Something I would like to mention, is that I wanted the band to be a forum where all of us as musicians could learn while we’re doing this process. So that it is not a static execution, but it’s a process of learning, ideally, every time we play. I think that’s part of what keeps the music vital.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/802652360646246400

He knew people in every corner of the country who he wrote letters to, played music with, who were partners in crime, or who would show up when he needed a ride to the next gig, a home-cooked burrito, or a comfortable place to crash. To have such a prodigious music career-turned-lifestyle while simultaneously rejecting corporate support meant that he had to rely on these friend networks. No, I haven’t since become a die-hard; I probably won’t go to the Sphere for nine nights next spring. But I did have a great time! It was kind of impossible not to. Maybe the best thing about it was what you can’t really get from tapes — the interaction and communication between band and audience. A stadium full of people who are exactly where they want to be, pushing their favorite band forward into the unknown. I found myself as entranced by the crowd as I was by the music, this mass of people moving ecstatically in real time. As Phish sang during their “Crosseyed and Painless” cover that night: “The feeling returns, whenever we close our eyes / Lifting my head, looking around inside.”

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/802108225096974336

Can we become inspired by the prospect of contributing to the future? Can we shame ourselves into thinking that we really do owe those who follow us some sort of consideration, just as the people of the nineteenth century shamed themselves out of slavery? Can we extend our empathy to the lives beyond ours? I think we can. Humans are capable of a unique trick: creating realities by first imagining them, by experiencing them in their minds. When Martin Luther King said “I have a dream”, he was inviting others to dream it with him. Once a dream becomes shared in that way, current reality gets measured against it and then modified towards it. As soon as we sense the possibility of a more desirable world, we begin behaving differently, as though that world is starting to come into existence, as though, in our minds at least, we’re already there. The dream becomes an invisible force which pulls us forward. By this process it starts to come true. The act of imagining something makes it real.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/801201440366444544

In my experience, she is true to herself to the point of being almost a void — that is, she is void of the crap that the rest of us live by, and it is a striking way of being. One external sign of this is that Kim enjoys performing to the top of her bent, and the way she expresses that is, she smiles the whole time she does it. No one else in rock music does that, and as soon as you see it, you realize how much you’re enjoying yourself too. We all are, always, at the rock shows we attend, because that is why we attend them. And yet you wouldn’t think that from how most people act on stage: only Kim Deal has the honesty to exude that enjoyment physically, to beam it out so obviously, from every fibre of her being, to be met by the audience, its collective breast outstretched for the hug of her essence, its collective face now grinning from ear to ear.”

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/800656965082726400

Well-trod territory at this point, maybe, but Gibbs and co. find plenty of undiscovered areas to explore — and hey, the album features late/great guitarist Pete Cosey, who was one of the primary architects of of this sound. You’ll also hear keyboard legend John Medeski on a handful of tracks. Amasia isn’t about soloists, though; it’s more about the ensemble sound, the collective blend, how the grooves come together and subsequently break apart. Exciting, adventurous music that’s well worth your time/money.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/800476249932939264

The well-traveled boot Teenage Perversity & Ships in the Night, recorded at the Roxy in January is as good an example as you could hope for — a pristine FM broadcast of the band (plus a brief appearance from Iggy Pop!) and audience having what can only be described as a real good time together. Sacred, profane and everything in between, it’s a blast from start to finish. Patti Says: When I perform, I just sort of mingle everything that I’m into at the moment. About a year ago, it was the legend of Scheherazade and Patty Hearst. But it keeps changing all the time. I"m always on a tightrope trying to keep all the stuff together. I got Rimbaud in my blood as strong as James Brown … If you’re really relentlessly into something and you’re into sound, it gets to the point where it doesn’t matter whether you’re good or evil or dream or whatever, you get into this rhythm of sound and you just have to be great no matter who you are.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/800113308368764928

Taking place at the Great American Music Hall very soon after the famed One From the Vault Dead show, it’s a loose, ramble-y affair with plenty of pals lending hands, including Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzmann. Just about 50 years ago, Hancock and the Headhunters were touring behind the classic Man-Child, which would turn out to be their last LP together. The end of a very funky era — an era that had taken Herbie from the outer edges of the avant-fusion scene to the dead-center of the jazz-rock mainstream. On an excellent FM broadcast from Omaha, NE, he’s in full freedom flight, playing a bank of state-of-the-art keys and synths with drummer Michael Clarke, bassist Paul Jackson, guitarist Blackbyrd McKnight, percussionist Bill Summers and reedsman Bennie Maupin shadow his every move. Hang up your hang ups for an hour and get into it. Herbie Says: See, before I was concentrating on the music and trying to say, “Well, how can I make this music in such a way that people could get into it?” I was putting the music on the pedestal, and then trying to figure out a way that people could get into it. I was making that the thing. And I changed my whole idea, making the people the thing first and figuring out what music is going to do them the best and then start the music from there. That makes a big difference. That way you start it from the bottom. You’re starting from the basis of the importance of anything. When you talk about music, you’re talking about values anyway.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/798842249463169024

The first, at Denver’s excellent Ghost Canyon Festival saw the saxophonist in a trio with guitarist Chaz Prymek and drummer Thom Nguyen; even though it took place in a bookstore basement, these three musicians sent everyone soaring into the stratosphere. The next time around Shiroishi was all on his own, but he still made a massive sound, delivering a set that was raw, emotional and often downright sublime. “Sublime” is a good way to describe Patrick’s latest LP, Forgetting Is Violent — in the broader sense of the word. Beautiful, yeah, but also terrifying, awe-inspiring. The overarching theme of much of Shiroishi’s work is memory, bearing witness against the erasure of past horrors and tragedies. His piercing tones, overlapping voices and hushed whispers aren’t always easy to listen to, but they’re impossible to ignore. How do you battle against the current tide of forgetting? Make something unforgettable.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/798570090806247424

One complete gig on their home turf at First Avenue in Minneapolis, plus another compact disc’s worth of onstage highlights cherrypicked from the next 12 months or so. I’ve been mainlining the promo for awhile now and I can faithfully report that the whole thing is, in fact, a miracle! The Dü was thankfully pretty well-documented via live recordings during their existence — while you wait for The Miracle Year, check out a performance from deep in the American heart of darkness … Trenton, NJ! As far as I know, the City Gardens venue was a legendarily debauched/debased spot, and Mould, Hart and Hart seem to be having a not-so-great time there; judging from their commentary at the end, they spent the whole set getting showered with gobs of spit from the audience. Fun! Nevertheless, they give these terrible Trentonians their money’s worth, and much more, raging and roaring almost nonstop through the new New Day Rising material alongside plenty of dips into their impressive back catalog. Love is all around — no need to fake it!

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/798207556823744512

After Danny Thompson passed away a few weeks back, I had to go back to Avocet, the wondrous instrumental LP Bert recorded with Thompson and multi-instrumentalist Martin Jenkins in the late 1970s. It still sounds so good. I also wanted to revisit this very sweet hour-long performance, taped in front of a live studio audience in Athens, OH, featuring Jansch, Jenkins and bassist Nigel Portman-Smith — AKA the Bert Jansch Conundrum. It comes and goes on ye olde YouTube, but it’s up in its entirety for now! The whole thing is a delight from start to finish, it’s got a bunch of great moments: a killer “Ask Your Daddy,” a lovely rendition of Avocet’s “Bittern,” and best of all, a unique “Running From Home” with Jansch and Jenkins singing in a cool round, circling each other beautifully. Jenkins is interesting — a real virtuoso on violin and mandolincello. He even gets a few solo spotlights, including a dazzling medley of jigs and reels that gets everyone in the crowd going. Martin deserves to be better known … maybe he should’ve been in bands with better names than Dando Shaft and Hedgehog Pie?! There they were, John and Exene, locking in on those harmonies that felt like blood-soaked incantations and also specifically the opposite of whatever Fleetwood Mac was. D.J. murdering the drums. Billy playing his Gretsch with that silver jacket and his legs spread impossibly wide, unbreakably smiling and bugging his eyes out at random women, acting like Eddie Cochran if he was from Mars. The visceral, bone-deep reaction, whatever that thing is you feel in your gut, they created was unbelievable. The audience was moving as one life form. People were losing their minds to this band I listened to in the dark in another town. Something about this, something in here, is what I do now.”

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/796304940884688897

Don’t mind if I do. This EAR FiLM production is a downright perfect 15-minutes of music and conversation — voice, guitar, fading Parisian sunlight … what more do you need? Myriam’s records have been a true gift over the past decade or so, if you’ve yet to get into them. But don’t take my word for it! Take these guys’ words for it! Damon Krukowski: When I first heard Myriam’s recordings, they sounded like Vashti Bunyan or another free spirit from the 1960s who seems to have been accidentally caught on tape while they were singing through life.Steve Gunn: Myriam’s music holds a remarkable weight and resonance, transcending any genre or timeframe. Her guitar playing, voice, and words are otherworldly, striking a stark balance of beauty and pain.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/796126738082054144

Danny was perhaps best-known as the always sturdy backbone of Pentangle; in tandem with drummer Terry Cox, he always brought such an incredibly rich and deep vibe to their performances, both in the studio and onstage. I’ll probably have more to say, but in the meantime, check out a nice (occasionally a little glitchy) KPFA-FM radio broadcast from the quintet at their early 1970s height, taking the Berkeley crowd from ancient folk ballads to less-ancient Mingus ballads. Listening to Pentangle is one of the great pleasures in life, as always, truly one of the best bands ever. Just sit back and revel in the 18-minute “Pentangling” that closes things out here — total bliss. Thirty years ago, before I ever even knew much (or any) Pentangle, however, I caught Danny playing with another talented Thompson — Richard — down in San Juan Capistrano. As I remember it, both of these dudes were having about as much fun as two musicians could have (legally, anyway), cracking each other up between songs … or even mid-song. Even when RT’s patented Doom & Gloom set in, the energy was absolutely invigorating and life-affirming. So long, Danny! <img src="

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/795673641287368704

I’ve never been there, but just the words have a relaxing quality. It’s there where Shelley Burgon took her acoustic concert harp a few years back to make The In Between. An entrancing, unbroken/un-amplified 56-minute performance, this is music that (as the title suggests) blurs the lines between the natural and the manmade worlds, finding almost perfect harmony. I say “almost” because you do hear the faint drone of an airplane at one point. Burgon’s playing is gorgeous throughout, minimal and spectral at certain points, lush and cascading at others. It’s the aural equivalent of a breath of fresh Topatopa Mountain air.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/795399047717470208

Effort isn’t really what we look for in Crazy Horse, of course. We want it to be free-flowing, pure and elemental. But it’s fascinating to hear Neil and the gang sinking — and occasionally rising to the surface.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/793224360466022400

It’s appropriately wide-ranging, taking the listener on an interstellar voyage through sound. There are heavy hitters like Joe McPhee and Wolfgang Voigt — the latter’s multi-part reimagination of Lanquidity is very cool indeed. But it’s Jason Adasiewicz’s solo vibraphone medley of “Lanquidity” and “Where Pathways Meet” that takes top prize here, with flowing, luminous overtones gently leading us into unknown worlds.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/789690954015703040

After a freeform sound collage intro, O'Rourke gives the Banana Hall crowd a nice sampling of tunes from that trio of late 1990s classics — Bad Timing, Eureka and Halfway To A Threeway. I think I heard Jim recently claim he doesn’t even own a guitar anymore, but the guy could pick with the best of them!A little over a year before this Osaka gig, I saw O'Rourke open for Sonic Youth in Los Angeles, and — correct me if I’m wrong, Jim Heads! — his entire set was a 30+ minute rendition of “Women Of The World Take Over,” Ivor Cutler’s mantra repeating ad infinitum, until the words stamped themselves on your skull. I was just a kid then, I didn’t really understand what was happening. But maybe I understand now?

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/784888174864465920

Maybe they have and I’ve just missed it. But allow me to rave for a minute here. Antigone is a total marvel, a jewel box of inventive production and arrangements, rapturous (sometimes Bacharachian) songcraft and cinematic moods. That latter aspect is a bit more heightened than on previous Ishibashi albums — she’s spent the last several years immersed in the soundtrack world, earning wide acclaim for the Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist scores. But it’s cool to have her back in a relatively poppier mode, whether it’s the swoon-y sounds of “Coma” or the ambitious moves of “Mona Lisa.” A rich, textured collection that goes deep into the mystery.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/784793648254566400

You should get down with the people a bit more.’ Which was kind of like our (the Dolls’) ethic when we started but then you start getting full of yourself or something… So I think I was trying to get a little right-sized. So, I just wanted to make an entertainment that was… I got into this thing where people would say 'You’re a rock star’ and I would say 'No, I’m a rock singer’ and stuff like that … That’s when I really paid my dues and learned my craft. With the Dolls, we essentially had this rarified existence because we exploded so quickly and started playing all over the world. With the Johansen band, we did go all over the world but also, I spent a lot of time in a van going from town to town and playing like… 300 nights a year. I was just in a working band and we played clubs and then we would have to open for all of these… “heavy mental acts” in hockey rinks. And we would just work, work, work, developing a bit of a work ethic.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/784340333369622528

Details are scant on the man that the Petty Bunco label calls “your favorite unknown guitarist’s favorite unknown guitarist,” but when you’ve got sounds this good, who needs details? Eye I Aye Ivy delivers awesomely cronchy, spiraling grooves that feel a bit like listening to isolated tracks from Stooges genius Ron Asheton. Raw and relentless, but not without a canny sense of melody and imagination. “The Diamond Sea” - Sonic Youth, Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, California, May 15, 1995

https://www.mediafire.com/file/nlnkifinmynkaob/06+Diamond+Sea.mp3/file
, with all kinds of vintage gear going up for sale — including “the Ludwig Phase II Synthesizer that [Lee] Ranaldo called ‘The sound of Washing Machine’s "Diamond Sea”’ and 'preposterously cool.’“ Good timing. It was just about 30 years ago this week that SY was debuting a bunch of Washing Machine tunes while opening R.E.M.’s Monster tour. So! Here’s one of the earliest live versions of that album’s epic closer "The Diamond Sea,” performed at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA. Not quite as epic as it would get over the course of the next year or so — just under 10 minutes. But it’s already a luminous, haunted beauty of cracked mirrors and fragmented feedback. I was supposed to see both R.E.M. and Sonic Youth for the first time about a week prior to the Shoreline show down in Los Angeles. But Bill Berry’s mid-tour aneurysm meant that the Great Western Forum gig was pushed back to the fall — and Sonic Youth wasn’t on the bill by then (it was Luscious Jackson instead). Bummer! Oh well, Sonic Youth can make it up to me all these years later by releasing a ginormous 30th anniversary Washing Machine box set. Pretty please?

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/783705383357300736

More jangle than you can wrangle! Recent must-hears include this long-ago double bill, which has been upgraded with a crisp SBD source for the R.E.M. portion. This is very early days for the band, of course; so early, in fact, that just a week prior, Berry, Buck, Mills and Stipe had recorded their debut single, a little tune called “Radio Free Europe,” at Mitch Easter’s Drive-In Studio up in Winston-Salem, NC. As their 45-minute set shows, R.E.M. had plenty more material in their backpockets, churning with energy, enigma and imagination. That beat!R.E.M. would spend the rest of the 1980s touring the globe. XTC, meanwhile, were about to say goodbye to live performance altogether, thanks to frontman Andy Partridge’s crippling stage fright. But they don’t show any signs of weakness at the B&L Warehouse. This is hardcore power pop, mixing muscle with melody expertly. The rowdy crowd of Athenians love it. Music and Pandemonium!

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/781627972949032960

Allen Toussaint - Community Arts Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, February 18, 1978

https://www.mediafire.com/file/o0j71frvbwpm9b1/toussaint78.zip/file
Vintage live tapes of the genius Allen Toussaint are few and far between — so we gotta get into this 1978 New Orleans audience recording. Yes we can! With a friendly hometown crowd at his feet, Allen is mostly alone at the piano for the show, playing a relaxed set filled with some of his best tunes — “I’ll Take A Melody,” “Southern Nights” (twice!), “What Do You Want The Girl To Do?” — his playing and singing masterful/soulful. I don’t think Toussaint performed a ton during this era, but he sounds totally at ease onstage for these 90 minutes. To wit, there are several seemingly off-the-cuff medleys, classical themes blending seamlessly with Crescent City-style vamps. Most interesting is when Allen jumps over to electric organ for a wild, almost avant-garde improv, a drum machine rhythm wafting in at one point — and hey, is that the Close Encounters of a Third Kind melody drifting in at one point? I’ll take it!

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/779725151978897408

At Westbeth, the latest EG cassette/digital offering, sees the quartet climbing to new heights of improvisational interplay, streamlining their approach without losing an ounce of raw vitality or exploratory attitude. While these musicians are clearly comfortable with one another, they’re not interested in coasting, as rollicking keys bounce off scintillating guitar work, the rhythm section driving things along without falling into predictable grooves. The mellower, more melodic moments are great, too; there’s a playfulness and joy to this music, showcasing a Group at the top (so far, at least) of its game.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/779544639929745408

Bob Dylan - Shelter From The Storm (The Never Ending Tour Years)

https://www.mediafire.com/file/ff4oi1ewu9grgw7/shelters.zip/file
stretching back to that ragged/glorious Rolling Thunder arrangement, but I’m focusing in on the Never Ending Tour years, seven versions that are all pretty radically different — a creature void of form! The mythopoetic “Shelter” is not exactly a greatest hit, but it’s one that Dylan never sleepwalks through, no matter what the era. He always seems to find a new angle on it, whether in the musical presentation or his vocal delivery, each one conjuring up another lifetime. A song of love and devotion on the face of it, but always weirder than you think — what other love songs have lines about being hunted like a crocodile? Ravaged in the corn?! 1988: I don’t think Johnny Cash ever covered “Shelter From The Storm” but here’s a readymade arrangement for him and the Tennessee Three. Dylan’s vocal is suspicious — “You wanna give me shelter from the storm? What is that, a threat?”1991: An almost comically revved up rendition, Bob dispatching the verses in rapid-fire fashion. It actually sounds like he might slip into “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest.” If the Feelies ever need to play “Shelter,” they can take notes here. 1995: A guitar-less, flu-ridden Dylan delivers a breathtaking performance in Prague, floating over Bucky Baxter’s pedal steel at the start and building into one of the most open-hearted vocals of his life. Bob himself can barely believe it. 2000: The “Love and Theft” lineup gets a crack at “Shelter,” and no surprise, it’s a lovely, elegant version, swelling in all the right spots, coaxing a restrained but beautiful reading from Dylan. 2005: A slow-but-steady train arrangement, with some inspired harmonica and piano work from Bob and sterling solos from the then-new Modern Times band. The singing is pretty wolf-y, but it works. 2010: Things get funky, with George Receli laying down a beat that might be at home on a mid-70s Meters record, minimalist breakdowns and Dylan’s roller-rink organ. It’s awesome, with Bob turning the song into a shaggy dog story, his phrasing hilarious. 2015: “Shelter” hasn’t been played since ‘15, and fittingly, its final (for now) form has an elegiac vibe in keeping with the Sinatra years. With Receli providing subtly threatening thunder clouds in the distance, this is designed for a fairly boozy Irish wake. Beauty walks a razor’s edge.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/774204001680015360

And Tropical Fuck Storm’s Inflatable Graveyard is a good live album. Really good. Recorded in Chicago in 2022 and recently released by Three Lobed, it captures the delightfully named Australian quartet in their natural habitat. There’s plenty of the raw, wiry energy that TFS has become renowned for, but it’s not all just blowouts and rave-ups; this is a band that can be devastatingly precise and economical when they need to be — and also highly melodic, as well. Groovy, even. The Clash might be the first comparison you reach for, but I kept thinking of early B-52’s, too. I’m sure it’s no substitute for actually being there, but this Fuck Storm will still blow you away.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/773205886884806657

Eno decided that to survive in the city he needed to imaginatively transform the place into something less overwhelming; after all, he was a Suffolk native raised amid the 'aloneness’ and 'very slow pace of things’ that characterized that sparsely populated coastal region of eastern England. The idea of New York as a 'strange, medieval, huge complex town in the middle of nowhere… suddenly made the place tolerable for me. You can easily live in New York and just see the mess of it. I had the good fortune to catch Dustin doing his thing live this past summer and — as the the title of his latest release suggests — it was a restorative, rejuvenating experience. Golden Feelings music, it turns out, is “tuned to 432 hz, a very subtle shift from the western standard of 440 hz which is nonetheless said to promote mental health and alignment of the chakras.” So yeah! Think Stars of the Lid, think Bitchin Bajas in yoga mode, think blissful, sun-kissed clouds. Stressful times call for healing sonics.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/764323788859080704

That’s where a 15-year-old had to go for these things back then, kids! Nothing too huge, just a staff mention here, a single review there. Charles Aaron reported: “GBV singer-songwriter Robert Pollard writes jittery, surging, sideways tributes to John/Paul, Syd Barrett, Lou Reed, Ray Davies, et al, like a teenager in full flush.” Sounded enticing! Then there was Jim Greer, in his A Year In The Life of Rock ‘n’ Roll column, closing out a long musing on the recently departed Kurt Cobain with this: “I listen a lot these days to 'Exit Flagger’ by Guided By Voices, an amazing song written by 37-year-old schoolteacher Robert Pollard in the middle of nowhere, where I live too, like most people, without a whole lot to go on. I quoted part of the lyrics at the beginning of this piece because however Pollard intended the song, it’s come to mean a lot more to me since Cobain’s death. The song’s lyrics end on a tag line after the chorus, which I have never been able to decipher properly. Just before the guitars begin their quick, cathartic crescendo to the fadeout, Pollard can be heard singing either 'Promise to lead you,’ or 'Promise to leave you.’ Or maybe both. So far it’s the closest thing I’ve come across to a clue in all this mess.” Oddly, Greer would’ve been able to ask Pollard what those lyrics were very soon; the writer joined GBV as bassist sometime in the summer of '94. He was also engaged to Kim Deal! Jim was leading some kind of indie rock charmed life, it seemed (of course, him and Kim never got married and he didn’t last all that long with Pollard and co., but hey). And what about me?! Well, after reading all of this and more, I finally came across a copy of Bee Thousand that fall at Go-Boy Records in Redondo Beach and took a chance — I don’t think I’d heard a note of Guided By Voices yet. And though I was confused at first when I dropped the needle on that bright-red vinyl, by the end I was more or less head over heels. It’s hard to re-create in my mind the weird, mysterious beauty of hearing that LP for the first few times, trying to figure out what was going on, but I know it unlocked something. Parallel lines on a slow decline, the story of our lives. Anyway, here we are 30 years later, and I’m listening to GBV play a typically rowdy hometown show that’s packed with Bee Thousand tunes, plus plenty of Alien Lanes tunes (then called Scalping The Guru, as Bob notes), alongside a host of classic numbers that still sound like they’ve been beamed in from some other, better universe. “Guided By Voices are fucking pussies!” Pollard exclaims bewilderingly in between songs. Hell yeah they are.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/761335815355924480

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Vredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands, December 4, 1982

https://www.mediafire.com/file/zz03en38lgxh5ms/petty82.zip/file
In the final analysis, I’m afraid, it’s all down to what’s on those records and what you put out at the shows. Sometimes it’s easy and sometimes it’s painful but you’ve got to try and evolve your art because you yourself get bored with it if you don’t. And once you get bored with it you might as well just be a plumber, cause it’s a miserable fuckin’ gig if you’re bored.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/761245097045147648

Woodbury is definitely all of those things. But he’s also slowly but surely building a beautiful sound world as JPW. This short-but-sweet EP is like JJ Cale and Cass McCombs going on a long desert road trip with no particular destination in mind. Lonesome drum machines, drift-y vocals, burnt guitar lines — the good shit, as we like to say. And hey, another great dude Chris Schlarb (Psychic Temple/Big Ego Records) shows up to lend his skills to a dank ‘n’ dubby remix of “The Road That Knows No Law.” My only complaint for this one is that it should go on for at least 10 more minutes.

https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/761154168890228736
