2027 Web Platform Feature Ranking

When I was first creating for the web, “The Web Platform” was made up of “whatever Microsoft and Netscape thought would help them obliterate the other.” A lot of what that meant? Write two sets of code to do the same thing. I can probably still write the Flash <embed> and <object> off the top of my head. I wrote about my appreciation for “write-once-2020s” in The Web Is Better.
In 2026, The Web Platform is made of not just megacorporations, but people. The Interop Project has a mission of improve interoperability significantly for the benefit of users and web developers. It does this by soliciting the opinions of those who are interested, including web developers such as myself.
My rankings
Improve interoperability of pointer events on touch devices
CSS flex-wrap: balance. Distributes items in a multi-line flex container so each line has about the same number of items.
CSS grid lanes (masonry). display: grid-lanes creates a layout where items are tightly packed into parallel lanes.
Web app installation via <install> and navigator.install(). Prompts the user to install a progressive web app.
Web app manifest share_target. Allows an installed web app to appear in the device's share dialog as a target for shared content.
Promises from programmatic scroll methods. scroll(), scrollTo(), scrollBy(), and scrollIntoView() return promises that resolve when scrolling completes.
HTML focusgroup attribute. Combines descendant elements into a single tab stop, with arrow-key navigation between them.
WebVTT. WebVTT files are loaded using the <track> element, and the VTTCue API can be used to create or update cues dynamically.
Connection-Allowlist header. Limits which origins a page may connect to using fetch and other APIs.
Allow CSS transitioning/animating display and content-visibility. Useful for delaying display: none until an exit animation completes.
Improve CSS sibling-count() and sibling-index() functions interop. Fix remaining test failures.
CSS margin-trim. Removes the margins of child elements when they meet the edges of the container.
CSS line-clamp property. Limits the text in a block container to a certain number of lines. Also allows custom end text if content overflow occurs.
CSS filter(image, ...filters). Takes an image and a filter, and returns a new image.
(Hooray imperfect democracy!)
Rankings also at https://interop-rank.fxdx.dev/share/artlung-4j6ms4prbdkt/
Selected random thoughts on why
1 and 2 are features that are layout-related for flex and grid.
3 and 4 are about improving how web apps can be treated as first-class applications on non-desktop devices.
7 and 8 are accessibility improvements which stand out to me. As I do more work with video and with accessibility testing, these two stand out.
Most of the rest are about CSS improvements to help write more concise and algorithmic CSS.
9 is one that strikes me as the kind of improvement which can make understanding cross-domain “AJAX”/fetch connections better understood.
So that’s me. Do you make things on the web>? Interested to participate? Get a GitHub account and vote.
Read the rankings of others!
A week ago at Front End Study Hall the urls for several other folks' rankings were shared. Check 'em out.
Ana R
Anthony C
Declan C
Eric M
Jeff B
Paweł G
Sara S
Stuart L
Tyler S
I’d also encourage you to give a read of Adrian Roselli‘s piece: Baseline Does Not Really Cover Baseline Support. Accessibility on the web is incredibly important, and in team development, it typically comes last. That ought to change.
Now you vote next!
Sign my Guestbook | Contact Me

https://artlung.com/blog/2026/10/22/2027-web-platform-ranking/

#webplatform #css #improve #write #interop #better

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

      BE INDIEWEB ENOUGH

I probably will revise this post in the next 24-36 hours. But hopefully not too much. After a good sleep I suspect I’ll have some edits.
Ten years ago I articulated my understanding of “indie web.” I’m cutting and pasting those 2016 words verbatim because they are still what I believe. And it’s still why I consider myself indie web. And I still participate in IndieWeb events.
A repost
I’m still a believer in the web. The “indie web” some call it now. I’ve had a personal website in one form or another for 20 years. I registered “artlung.com” for the first time January 30, 1997. That sounds right and sure sounds like a long time ago.
And yet it’s all quite finite. The state of the world. The state of US politics. It’s all quite a lot to bear. So diversions like this are enjoyable. I’ve let too many projects of mine go fallow for too long. It’s okay to take time off, but right now, this historical moment seems like a good time to remember the power of personal publishing. It’s time to take control of the many and various abilities to communicate to the world. I’m tired of every mechanism we have to talk to people filtered through entities who can censor us. I’m tired of moderating my voice through Facebook and Twitter because of community standards.
The net was once a bastion of free speech. Now I hear every other day about a person whose posts were taken down on Instagram. Accounts suspended for posting about police violence or a nipple. I’m tired of trolls and odious persons who make every space troll-space, insulting, making threats and threads of murder, rape and mayhem in response to people just trying to say their peace in this world. And I suppose mechanisms which take down posts and suspend accounts are intended to make this online space more livable. But in truth the world is not better off when we are afraid all the time to speak our peace. The world is worse.
Free expression is a human right. It’s a basic part of human dignity. But it’s rather higher up the ladder of the “hierarchy of needs.” It’s hard to take “free expression” seriously when people can’t find a decent wage-paying job.
But maybe free expression can save us? Maybe the tools we have at our disposal to tell our truth are the pathway to make the world a better place? People need human connection. Thomas P.M. Barnett wrote a book a few years ago and stressed the idea of “connectivity” as being crucial for nations to have prosperity. I remember many of his talks, all online, and in them he would use the phrase “disconnectedness defines danger.”
This phrase applies to people too. I think about the hard times in my life, and what kept me from destruction were those people who reached out to me to be there for me. Connection is the whole ball game.
And the indie web is a way to do that. It’s not the only thing out there, but it’s an important thing. I think it can bridge the gaps between people. Between people who are angry at each other, even.
I would not attend an Official IndieWeb event for 3 years after writing that.
I considered myself “indieweb” when I wrote it.
No matter that I didn’t have an h-card. I didn’t accept webmentions. I posted to Instagram regularly. I didn’t run any indieweb software whatsoever on my website.
I was as IndieWeb then as I am today. Today, I accept webmentions on a dozen websites, I have an h-card on very nearly every page I maintain. I have backed up Tweets and Foursquare posts and Instagram posts and Flickr files to my own site. I have rel=me tags to associate myself with external sites like GitHub and Mastodon and Codeberg. I send DNS headers to associate myself with Bluesky.
I am no more IndieWeb now than I was then.
It may be true that I have taken action to implement more IndieWeb principles, but there’s no scoring or gamification in it. And a person who does less than me doesn’t “earn” more credibility. A person is indieweb even if they don’t implement every tool, or doesn’t know the difference between PESOS and POSSE.
To me, principles 1, 10, and 11 are the key ones.
Own your domain & data. Your identity, your content, your metadata.
Pluralism. With IndieWebCamp we’ve specifically chosen to encourage and embrace a plurality of diverse approaches & projects. This background makes the IndieWeb stronger and more resilient than any one approach.
Above all, Have fun.
When I hear folks express concern that they don’t accept webmentions, aren’t a programmer, don’t have micropub endpoint, AND SO, they are “less” I feel genuine frustration. If some person claiming indieweb-ness says you and your site are “less” they are failing at the goal of pluralism.
Self-publishing to our own domains is what matters most. If you are doing that, I am in solidarity with you. The principles of indie web, a web for human beings–empowers human expression and is a tool to make common cause with others.
Yesterday Senator Bernie Sanders wrote this:
This is what billionaire ownership of the media means:
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shut down the No Kings account for hours during the height of their protests.
Meta suppressed accounts supporting Brazil President Lula da Silva in the recent election.
Larry Ellison’s TikTok blocked advertising for a documentary criticizing Elon Musk.
Fight back. Defeat oligarchy. Preserve democracy.
IndieWeb principles support that fight. When indieweb folk talk about silos and site deaths we are pointing out the shortcomings of walled gardens and the doomscroll, the shadow ban, and “the algorithm.” Nevermind enshittification and the algospeak which people have taken to speaking to avoid the attention of censors.
We may not be an organization that advocates for specific political aims. As a group we do not take stands on Palestine or Ukraine, on ICE or Trans rights, but we are political in our way on the issue of free expression and in opposing silos which prevent human beings from communicating in the way they wish to. To the extent that pluralism is aligned with basic human rights to the right to live lives free of violence and to expression we are aligned, but it’s not explicit. And just as I type this understand, despite running many IndieWeb events over the years, I do not speak for the organization. Moreover, I don’t know anyone who plausibly can.
The statement we do make, in our way, is in support of self-publishing and identity and pseudonymity on the web. Publishing is a radical, political act. It’s not an accident that the US administration views publishing and distributing zines as worthy of jail time. The fascist impulse to jail publishers and distributors of information is a tragic irony–the United States for all its faults exists as a political entity in part because of pamphleteers:
Pamphlets were used to broadcast the writer’s opinions: to articulate a political ideology, for example, or to encourage people to vote for a particular politician. Early modern news pamphlets also made extensive use of stock imagery to describe, highlight, or criticize various social and cultural events and issues. During times of political unrest, such as the French Revolution, pamphleteers were highly active in attempting to shape public opinion. Before the advent of telecommunications, those with access to a printing press and a supply of paper often used pamphlets to widely disseminate their ideas.
The line from pamphleteers to Samizdat to personal websites, to me, is a straight one. And people who are aligned with me on these topics I feel in solidarity with. In IndieWeb zoom calls I answer questions about tools and code. My goal? To democratize and demystify and to share the empowerment I feel on my website with those who are curious to give it a go.
Enter AI
Into the web I love so dearly has come a new force: “AI.” It enters every conversation. I wrote my own opinion on it here. And I recently began collating metaphors for it here. They are not flattering. A printing press constitutes power, and power must be accountable. Wikipedia has a page called “deaths linked to chatbots.” Companies which provide popular AI tools are utterly unaccountable.
And on the positive side, I use the autocomplete aspects of Copilot to good effect, and don’t begrudge those whose software-making has been improved by the tools. And also, there are versions of these tools which run right off of your own laptop. AI is not a person or a genius or anything. It’s software. And the more things you connect it to, the more risks you take if that software goes wrong.
And software writers are using AI. Are they reckoning and acknowledging the current and future harms of these tools? Can they not see the disregard for existing law on the rights of creators? Do they see the way data centers consume resources and pollute? Are they ignoring critics? Are they in alignment with the powerful forces which say “this is how it must be?” I think they see a tool that can help them do work, and then elide the secondary effects.
I would like for this to not splinter the positive ecosystem indieweb principles have facilitated. I can read a recent pair of posts which–approximately oppose each other–the first from Brennan, the second from Aaron, and I agree with both.
Stakes is high
Twitter in a very real sense elected Donald Trump President the first time. And that company now empowers the oligarchic bullying of Elon Musk now. Facebook empowered a genocide in Rohingya. Go read Erin Kissane and Zeynep Tufekci on the social and political stakes of web silos. Bluesky/ATProto and Mastodon/Fediverse use web technologies and may be the path to a replacement for those services. But it’s also plausible that government regulation could change things, too. I think there’s broad agreement among regular people that big tech companies: social media and AI, ought to be held accountable for their products in the same way tobacco and automotive companies are held to account. (To the extent they are).
People are proud to say “I got off Instagram.” I understand that. I also don’t begrudge a human being for using Instagram to sell their art or see their sister’s new baby photo. A silo is neither good nor bad. A silo has behavior that either supports human thriving and does not do harm, or it does not. Lately, there’s a lot of harm happening from TikTok and YouTube and Facebook and Instagram and Substack. Look to the “criticisms” section on the Wikipedia pages for those services.
I want to see accountability. I want to defeat oligarchy and preserve democracy, as Bernie wrote. Companies which are unaccountable ought to be opposed. Personal websites can provide both social refuge and activist tools for change. I will continue to advocate for the indie web, the small web, IndieWeb, and humane web. I am happy to make common cause, and spread the word about the indieweb.
As in 2016, the world is a mess, and times are hard, and there’s work to be done. I’m hopeful that folks can find a way to take the building blocks the IndieWeb has articulated to make their websites work they want, to do work that needs to be done.
Sign my Guestbook | Contact Me

https://artlung.com/blog/2026/10/19/be-indieweb-enough/

#enough #free

#rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

      Not that William Gibson

I sometimes find myself amused at the errors of recommendation systems.
I worked for a streaming music company for several years, and music services are NOTHING but recommendation systems. Heck, walk into a record store or turn on an FM radio and those entities are recommending you listen to music or pick up music. And it’s easy to get wrong.
So when I got an email about “New deals from an author you follow” with a subsection entitled “Top William Gibson books for you” I am more than willing to take a look.
Here’s a screenshot of the email.
Well, I do love Virtual Light, quite a lot. I’ve not heard of #cyberpunkNOW and the Dystopian Moment: The London Reader, Volume One, and may check it out.
But the third book: Letters to My Son, Vol. 1 is unfamiliar to me. It’s from 1917: Here’s the entry for the book on the Forgotten Books (publisher) website.
There’s plenty of foult to go around here. The publisher appears to be doing work to make older work easily available on digital platforms, they could provide more clarity on the author, and that a book written in 1917 could not be authored by the Neuromancer-writing author William Gibson born in 1948.
But all of it points to how much automation modern retailing depends on. Amazon knows I like William Gibson. I’ve bought his books and audiobooks many times over the years. Amazon wants to sell things. The error of collating two different William Gibson’s work is prosaic, forgivable, and to me points out the essential fallibility of our computer systems.
And none of this gets fixed with any new computational powers we have in 2026. Human judgment to scale good recommendations is required. Otherwise, what we have is what my father would deride as “C work.”
It is not excellent.
It is not infallible or amazing or unbelievably good.
It’s not the astounding tech which fiction–including Gibson’s–has been promising for my entire life. HAL 9000 was on movie screens in 1968 and would not make this error.
I don’t know where we went wrong, but we are past time for every human being to be realistic about what computers do. I think it’s happening. But we ought to apply the same skepticism to our understanding of how computers used in law enforcement, the military, and government work, too.
That’s what my email from Amazon inspired me to write today. Thanks for reading.
Sign my Guestbook | Contact Me

https://artlung.com/blog/2026/10/13/not-that-william-gibson/

New Bot Day! Bad Robot is based on the corporate logo of Bad Robot Productions. Bad Robot first appeared in 2001, ahead of tv and film projects running through a meadow, then J.J. Abrams’ kids say “Bad Robot.” Welcome to the collection!

Sign my Guestbook | Contact Me

https://artlung.com/blog/2026/10/14/bad-robot-welcome/
