Looks like two of Bsky's content hosts are currently down (unfortunately including the one where my main account is located). So there's this weird thing where some accounts can get in just fine, but anyone on morel.east-us and oyster.east-us can't load the site right now.

More annoyingly, this isn't based on where *you* are located - it's based on where your account was created/where it paths through. So tunneling doesn't help you. My alt account (merakburr.ursamajorartworks.com) works just fine, but my main account (aliothfox.ursamajorartworks.com) doesn't. EVEN MORE infuriatingly, I am still able to get *notifications* from my main account, but I can't actually connect to read/clear them.

It's been down now for about 90 minutes, which is longer than their usual outages (which often last only a few minutes or a few seconds), but hopefully they get things running again soon.

Please note: some of you may see sticker thumbnails rendered incorrectly in your sticker packs (with a white background instead of transparent like it should be). I'm not sure what has caused this, but it seems to be an issue with Telegram's sticker bot. I've double-checked files and everything looks correct on my end. The issue seemed to happen mainly with people who have been supporters for a while and have large sticker packs. I tested sending the stickers, and even though the thumbnails don't show up correctly in the pack, the stickers themselves seem to work just fine, so there's no reason for concern as far as I can tell. If you're trying to send a sticker from your pack and it doesn't send correctly, please let me know and I'll see what I can do. Thank you!

For years, we leftists have hammered on "freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences." And that's true, it's not, but consider what we often mean by "consequences."

We USUALLY (not always) mean social consequences: getting banned from a community, being ostracized from friends, etc.

But what do those social consequences actually mean in an internet world? It's so easy online to find like-minded people. On social media platforms, we naturally gravitate towards people who think like we do, and anonymity means there are often few (if any) OFFLINE consequences to what we say.

And inside those clusters (or even broader communities) of like-minded people, people radicalize each other, for better or worse. As the groups grow larger and more philosophically diverse, they tend to factionalize and splinter into smaller groups, and the process repeats.

I used to be content to say "we need some diversity of thought in our social groups, but there are some positions that are non-starters." The problem is that nowadays, a lot of the things that were once "non-starters" are now mainstream (or at least widely held) opinions.

I don't really know where I'm going with this rambling, to be honest. I'm not suggesting a course of action. I'm not saying "maybe we need to make nice and let the MAGA dipshits be friends with us again" because fuck that. All I know is that I see a broad social problem with no obvious solution.

And while the right wing certainly has a lot to answer for, I'm not even sure that we can blame them for this specific issue. I think it's the result of being able to construct an online persona (which we all do; that persona is varying degrees of accurate to our real selves) and be always online.

People growing up nowadays are socialized very differently from how we elder millennials were. That's not an "old man yells at cloud"; I'm not saying our way is better or worse. I'm just saying it was different. Any internet access we had was primitive. Our childhood connections were face to face.

The internet - especially social media - has changed the way we socialize. And it began doing that from the beginning, but NOW we have an entire generation coming of age that has *never known anything different* from the always-online, always-connected internet-as-a-part-of-life way.

We have people in their late 20s and even early 30s who have no meaningful memory of a pre-broadband world. And I don't know what that means for the concept of free speech. I have to believe the cornerstone remains the same, but I think it's naïve to believe that nothing in practice has changed.

The way we communicate - the way we speak - has changed. I don't know what that means. But I think it has fundamentally altered the way we look at society and all of the social contracts that it comes with, whether we consciously realize it or not, whether we understand HOW or not.

Really, I think it depends on what qualifies for you as "decent social interaction." I get plenty of decent social interaction on FA, Bsky, and Fedi (Weasyl not so much because it's pretty much dead lol). The social interaction in all three of those places is "decent," but it is also *different* in all three places. The pace is different, the breadth of interaction is different, and the *style* of interaction is different.

Fur Affinity is not a site with a feed that gives real-time notification and delivers Content™, and for a lot of people, *that is exactly why they like it.* They *like* having an inbox they can check, and notifications they can read through and clear without being afraid that they've scrolled past something or missed it. You talked about how you're upset that they got rid of the old forums in favor of Discord, but in a way, the old inbox-style social features are *much more in line* with the "forum-favored" attitude than a modern Bsky/Fedi/Facebook style "feed" would be. No one expects instant/quick responses. You still get engagement, but it may come a day later (or a week, or a month).

If that isn't for you, then I agree, you probably won't get much out of Fur Affinity. But for a lot of people - including non-artists - it's refreshing to have a site where you can log in and refresh a few times a day to "catch up," manage all of your interactions in one session, and then walk away from it.

My honest opinion is that there are a LOT of people on all sides of the Fur Affinity debate who are kind of... expecting and/or hoping for it to be something that it is never going to be. (I think you already know this but full disclosure in case you don't: I was involved in working with the FA admins during the whole rule 2.7 kerfuffle to help them figure out where the site needed to go.) I made connections in that little "workshop group," and I still talk fairly regularly with Sciggles and the others who were part of that.

In some ways, I don't really see Fur Affinity being that much different from, say, a furry-centric Mastodon instance. Yes, the moderation is "centralized," but in isolation, so is the moderation of any Fedi instance. And I realize that the "in isolation" is carrying a lot of weight there, but the point still stands. It's very like a Fedi instance in the sense that at its core, it's run primarily by one extremely tired person with limited resources and a well-meaning staff who are doing the best they can (the ones who were causing most of the problems all just kinda skedaddled).

AT SOME POINT, whenever you post on any kind of social site (which, from reading your other replies to this, you clearly consider FA to fit that definition), no matter how well it is organized or moderated, you do have to accept some degree of "I trust the judgment of the people who moderate this forum." What I say of Fur Affinity is the same thing I'd say of any of the four other sites (Cubhub, Bsky, Weasyl, Telegram) where I regularly post my art: it so far serves its stated functions well enough to continue posting art there, but I don't trust its *continued* ability to do that enough to not be diversified. There's staff turnover, there's changing moderator attitudes, there's resource adjustments, there's unexpected expenses, there's the turbulent regulatory landscape... those things affect most websites, not just FA. And any one of those things could alter it to a point of being no longer viable, at any time.

For myself, aside from the times last year when I was butting heads with Sciggles (who, afterwards, was extremely conciliatory towards me after she recognized the problems her staff was creating), I have never had any negative interactions with FA's moderation, for what it's worth. That's not to dismiss the others who obviously *have* had those negative interactions, but for my part, I've been on FA since 2011 and haven't had major issues, despite being a somewhat visible ABDL artist who does draw mature/adult themes in my ABDL work.

But circling back around to my original point, there are a lot of people who want/expect FA to be something it's not ever going to be: it's never going to be open-source. It's never going to be community-owned. It's never going to be some magnanimous "this site is yours, and I am just its caretaker" thing that a lot of furries want it to be. Sorry, but it's just not. It's never going to be modernized to microblog/social media "timeline" standards, because that is not what the site owner wants it to be, and it's her website.

Now, having said all of that, it's ALSO not going to be a relic that gets left behind from the modern internet. A lot of the major barriers that have prevented them from getting updates done have been coming down. They're deep into tackling their infamous code debt. They've probably pushed out more substantive updates in the last six months than we saw in the previous six years - and to be perfectly frank, Sciggles deserves a lot of credit for making that happen. Since the 2.7 fiasco, she has learned a LOT and has done a really good job at keeping her head out of the *noise* and just getting shit done. She's been listening to the community; they've been allowing comments on their site announcement journals, and the staff has been *engaging with those comments regularly*.

So obviously, by my own personal reckoning, that earns them enough good will for me to give their new leadership a fair chance. As for the social aspect, it's just like the Fediverse: you will get out of it what you put into it. That doesn't necessarily mean posting a bunch of journals and art, but it DOES mean engaging with people on the site. Do you WATCH artists? Do you favorite their art? Do you comment on their art? Do you comment on journals? Do you get involved in conversations on FA? Because they absolutely do happen.

Whether that's something you want to involve yourself in or not is your call. Really, "should I go back to FA" depends on what you want/expect to get out of it. But if you're *purely* asking "Should I give the admin of FA another chance to be fair-minded?" then the answer is absolutely yes. My own personal involvement aside, the proof is in the improvements to the website (including its moderation).

I haven't done enough of a deep dive to really know. What I DO know is that it shows all posts from both places in a single timeline, it supports Bsky feeds, I get notifications from both places, and I can post simultaneously to both sites, and reply to posts from both timelines.

I don't necessarily think it's useful as a full-on replacement for either app, but it's a good "daily driver" to keep things in one place :)
