Every welfare state sells itself on the same premise: that the government exists to protect the weak, redistribute risk and smooth the sharp edges of a market economy that would otherwise chew through the vulnerable without mercy. Scandinavia in particular has spent seventy years exporting this image to the rest of the world and Sweden above all has become shorthand for a kind of state that supposedly cares. Free healthcare, generous parental leave, cradle-to-grave social insurance - the brochure is seductive and millions of migrants arriving in Europe over the past two decades have absorbed it uncritically as gospel.

What the brochure omits is that the modern Swedish welfare state was built, quite literally, on a eugenics program that ran for forty-two years, from 1934 to 1976, sterilizing an estimated 63,000 people, the overwhelming majority of them women, most of them poor, many of them disabled and virtually none of them meaningfully consenting to what was done to their bodies. This was not a rogue institution acting outside the law. It was state policy, passed by parliament, defended by every major party except the communists and administered through the same bureaucratic machinery that today issues residence permits and integration certificates to new arrivals.

The people targeted were not chosen at random. Swedish authorities used IQ tests, social worker assessments and institutional classification to decide who counted as a "misfit" unworthy of continuing their bloodline. A child who failed to read the blackboard because nobody had checked her eyesight could be declared mentally subnormal, shipped into a special school and coerced into signing sterilization papers by the age of seventeen. Siblings orphaned by a mother's death could be tested, classified as "idiots" and sterilized before they had any legal capacity to refuse. Filmmaker Kjell Sundstedt only discovered decades later that his aunt and four uncles had lived through exactly this and that the family had kept it silent out of shame at what the state had done to them, not shame at anything they had done themselves.

The justification was never framed as cruelty. It was framed as fiscal responsibility and social engineering — the belief that a welfare state could only remain solvent and orderly if it stopped producing citizens who would need to lean on it. German academics did not invent this framework independently. They traveled to Uppsala, studied its methods and used it as the direct template when they founded their own Institute for Racial Biology in Berlin in 1927, an institution that went on to provide the pseudoscientific backbone for Nazi eugenics policy a decade later.

Sociologist Masoud Kamali has been blunt about the sequence: German scientists took the Uppsala model to Berlin and that transfer helped lay the intellectual groundwork for what became institutionalized Nazism. Sweden stayed neutral through the war and is remembered internationally as the humane counterweight to its neighbor's atrocities, yet its own sterilization program continued for three full decades after the Nuremberg trials had supposedly settled, once and for all, that states do not get to decide which of their citizens deserve to have children. Norway sterilized roughly 40,000 people under comparable laws, Denmark around 6,000 and thirty US states ran their own programs well into the postwar period, with North Carolina alone sterilizing 7,700 people, two-thirds of them Black. The uncomfortable truth is that Nazi Germany did not invent this ideology. It borrowed it, industrialized it and then everyone else kept practicing a milder version while pointing at Berlin as the sole villain.

If you are a migrant from India, or from anywhere in Asia or Africa, currently navigating a European integration system, work permit renewal, or citizenship application, this history is not a museum curiosity. It is a direct warning about the character of the institutions now assessing your worth as a resident. The same state apparatus that decided a poor Swedish teenager was too "unintelligent" to have children is structurally identical to the one now scoring your language proficiency, your labor market value, your cultural compatibility and your criminal record to decide whether you deserve to stay. Bureaucracies do not become incapable of this kind of categorization simply because the categories in fashion have changed from "racial hygiene" to "integration potential."

The specific danger for migrants from India and other parts of Asia is a particular kind of misplaced trust: the assumption that European institutions are uniquely rational, procedurally fair and immune to the kind of majoritarian cruelty migrants may associate with weaker states back home. Sweden's own history says otherwise and says it for forty-two consecutive years, well past the point where any reasonable person would assume a democracy had learned its lesson. The compensation scheme launched in the 1990s reached barely 3,000 of the estimated 60,000-plus victims and even that modest gesture only came after a former minister publicly admitted, in 1997, that she had initially refused to pay compensation because the sterilizations had, after all, been entirely legal under Swedish law at the time. Legality and legitimacy are not the same thing and the gap between them is exactly where migrant communities remain most exposed, because migrants rarely have the political capital, media access, or generational memory to contest a policy decision made against them decades before anyone notices the pattern.

To be fair to the modern Swedish state and to the European project more broadly, defenders would point out that the sterilization program was abolished in 1976 precisely because Swedish civil society, feminist movements and eventually the press forced accountability onto a political class that had preferred silence. They would argue that the postwar human rights architecture (the European Convention on Human Rights, the Council of Europe's own 2011 condemnation of the program, the UN's classification of forced sterilization as violence against women) exists specifically to prevent repetition and that modern immigration bureaucracies, however flawed, operate under far more scrutiny, litigation exposure and press freedom than the closed institutional world of 1950s Sweden ever did. That argument has real weight and anyone reading this should weigh it seriously rather than assume that history simply repeats itself on schedule.

But weighing it seriously is different from trusting it blindly and that is the entire point. States rarely announce the next group they intend to categorize as inconvenient. They simply do it, through committees and IQ-style assessments dressed in new vocabulary and the people least equipped to notice are always the ones with the least institutional memory of what the state has already done to somebody else.

Munger pointed to Berkshire's financing of the Anadarko transaction as an example. The company controlled premier acreage in the Permian Basin, the most valuable oil-producing region in the United States. Berkshire received preferred securities with an attractive yield, substantial downside protection and exposure to capable operators. The critical variables were obvious. The decision did not require months of investigation because the central facts driving the outcome were already visible.

Modern finance often creates the illusion that every investment decision can be reduced to an exhaustive checklist. Munger believed the opposite. The highest-value skill is identifying the few factors that actually matter and then having the confidence to act before everyone else finishes reading documents that are largely irrelevant.

3. His third lesson may be the most important because it explains how Berkshire evolved from a good investment vehicle into one of the greatest wealth-compounding machines in history.

According to Munger, Berkshire's most successful investments often emerged when Buffett and Munger abandoned the very rules that had previously made them successful. The best example is See's Candies. Today, investors discuss the acquisition as if its brilliance was obvious. In reality, Buffett and Munger nearly failed to buy it. The company appeared expensive compared to the types of statistically cheap businesses they had traditionally pursued. They were anchored to a framework that prioritized low valuations and tangible assets. By those standards, See's did not look particularly attractive.

Munger later admitted that Berkshire was only barely smart enough to make the purchase. A partner repeatedly argued that they were analyzing the situation incorrectly. Taken together, these three ideas reveal something profound about how Munger viewed investing. He did not believe superior results came from predicting the future more accurately than everyone else. He did not believe they came from gathering more information than everyone else. And he did not believe they came from rigidly following a predefined system. Instead, he believed superior results came from understanding reality more clearly than everyone else, identifying the few variables that truly matter, avoiding obvious mistakes and remaining intellectually flexible enough to abandon cherished ideas when the evidence demanded it.

Most investors spend their careers trying to become smarter than the market. Munger spent his trying to become less foolish than the competition.

1. 1906–1924 (~18 years)
San Francisco. WWI. Spanish Flu. Two decades of noise, no progress.

2. 1929–1954 (~25 years)
The longest drought in market history. The Crash of '29 didn't bottom until '32 — and the Dow didn't reclaim that peak until the mid-1950s. A full generation.

3. 1966–1982 (~16 years)
The invisible bear. The Dow oscillated between 600–1,000 for 16 years. Vietnam, Nixon, stagflation, oil embargoes. Real returns were deeply negative once you adjust for inflation.

4. 2000–2013 (~13 years)
The "Lost Decade" that was actually 13 years. Tech bust → 9/11 → GFC → European Debt Crisis. The Dow in 2013 sat roughly where it did in 2000.

Total: 72 years of the last 126 spent going sideways.

The chart looks like a rocket ship in hindsight. It didn't feel like one to anyone living through it.

One uncomfortable question keeps coming back whenever I look at modern wars not as a citizen, not as a moral commentator, but as an investor watching the machinery of capital allocation: which of the recent wars has actually improved the life of any nation involved in it? Take Russia’s war against Ukraine. Has life improved for Ukrainians, who live under destruction, mobilization, demographic trauma, debt dependence, and infrastructure damage? Obviously not. Has life improved for ordinary Russians, who face sanctions, isolation, militarization of society, inflationary pressure, lost human capital, and a future increasingly subordinated to the logic of permanent confrontation? Again, no. Even if certain sectors profit, the nation as a living organism does not become healthier, freer, richer, or more secure.

Look at Israel and Gaza. For Gaza, the catastrophe is visible without explanation. But has Israel become a better place to live because of the war? Has the state become more stable, more united, more trusted, more secure, more attractive to capital, more attractive to its own most productive citizens? The answer is hard to defend as “yes.” The same question applies to the confrontation between Israel, the United States, and Iran. Which society became meaningfully better off? Which middle class became safer? Which taxpayer became richer? Which young generation inherited a more predictable future? The answer, again, is almost nowhere. Modern war seems increasingly unable to produce the old promise of national renewal, historical correction, or political rebirth. It produces exhaustion, debt, surveillance, insecurity, fiscal pressure, migration, polarization, and permanent emergency.

This is where the investor’s view becomes colder than the political view, because markets reveal what official language often hides. If we ask who benefits, the answer is rarely “the nation.” It is rarely the average citizen, the taxpayer, the young family, the soldier, the small business owner, or even the long-term stability of the state itself. The visible beneficiaries are often the industrial and financial structures positioned around the war economy: defense contractors, missile producers, drone manufacturers, ammunition suppliers, cyber-security firms, intelligence contractors, logistics groups, reconstruction intermediaries, commodity traders, energy infrastructure firms, and the financial institutions that fund, hedge, insure, securitize, and distribute the entire process. Look at the equity charts, the order books, the margins, the capitalizations, the political access, and the “strategic importance” suddenly assigned to these companies. Rheinmetall, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, Leonardo, Thales, Elbit, Hanwha Aerospace, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and a broader universe of American, European, Israeli, Korean, and Japanese defense-linked companies do not experience war as tragedy in the same way societies do. For them, war is demand visibility.

The result is still difficult to ignore: modern war increasingly redistributes quality of life away from populations and toward systems that monetize insecurity. The citizen receives taxes, inflation, mobilization, anxiety, censorship pressure, reduced social spending, higher debt burdens, and a permanently degraded sense of future normality. The corporate sector attached to conflict receives contracts, subsidies, urgency, political protection, long-duration procurement pipelines, and a moral vocabulary in which every budget increase becomes “security,” every margin becomes “resilience,” and every industrial expansion becomes “deterrence.”

This is what makes today’s wars different from the grand historical narratives many people still carry in their heads. The WWII, despite its almost unimaginable destruction, produced a world in which some defeated and devastated countries eventually rebuilt into more prosperous states. Germany, after catastrophe, occupation, division, guilt, destruction, and defeat, became both West Germany and East Germany, each reconstructed under different systems, and eventually reunified into one of the richest societies on earth. Japan was destroyed and then rebuilt into an industrial power. Western Europe, after being ravaged, was integrated into a new security and economic architecture. The moral price of that history cannot be romanticized, but the postwar order did contain a visible reconstruction logic: institutions, industry, infrastructure, social contracts, currency regimes, and national economies were rebuilt around a promise that ordinary life would become better after the fire.

The disturbing question is whether that logic still exists. In the current era, war often ends less with a Marshall Plan for society than with a procurement cycle for corporations. It does not necessarily produce new constitutional settlements, new social contracts, or broad-based national renewal. It produces frozen conflicts, militarized budgets, sanctioned economies, fragmented trade routes, energy shocks, refugee flows, intelligence expansion, emergency legislation, and a permanent political argument for why civilian priorities must wait. Housing can wait. Healthcare can wait. Education can wait. Infrastructure can wait. Industrial policy cannot wait, once it is attached to missiles, ammunition, drones, satellites, chips, sensors, naval systems, or energy security.

As an investor, I find this morally ugly but analytically important. The market is telling us that the age of “peace dividends” has been replaced by the age of “war dividends,” and those dividends do not accrue evenly to nations. They accrue to sectors. And once that becomes the operating model, the most dangerous question is no longer who wins the war, because often nobody truly wins in social terms. The more precise question is who monetizes the permanent preparation for the next one.

Es geht hier nicht um ein zusammenbrechendes Regime oder um Krieg, sondern um demokratische Verschiebungen im Wählerverhalten. Und dennoch zeigt sich ein vertrautes Muster: lange Zeit wird ein Trend ignoriert, relativiert oder als temporär eingeordnet, während er im Hintergrund an Stabilität gewinnt.

Viele erkennen die Veränderung, aber nur wenige ziehen früh Konsequenzen daraus - sei es politisch, gesellschaftlich oder strategisch. Parteien reagieren spät, Institutionen noch später, und ein Teil der Bevölkerung verhält sich ähnlich wie 1945 in einem ganz anderen Kontext: abwartend, beobachtend, nicht unbedingt überzeugt, aber auch nicht bereit, früh Position zu beziehen.

First, take the blueprints of a highly secret and advanced Russian component designed to trigger a nuclear chain reaction, originally developed in Arzamas-16 and allegedly obtained by the Americans. Second, subtly modify those designs so the device would no longer function. Third, pass the altered blueprints to the Iranians. Fourth, the Iranians, relieved that they wouldn’t have to invest years into developing their own trigger, would adopt the Russian design. And finally, the outcome: the bomb would fail, and the program would be set back.

The plan was clever, but step three posed a serious problem. If you are an Iranian nuclear scientist and someone shows up with sensitive Russian bomb schematics, you are unlikely to accept them at face value. To solve this, the CIA decided to use a courier who would seem credible: a Russian nuclear scientist who had been on their payroll for years. The scientist was deeply uncomfortable with the assignment. His defection had been driven not just by money, but by a belief in the “end of history” and alignment with what he saw as the free world, and delivering nuclear weapons designs to another state ran directly against those convictions. For operational security reasons, he was never told the plans had been deliberately sabotaged. Instead, he was reassured that Iran already possessed similar designs, and that his role was merely to help track how information moved within their program.

He accepted the explanation and set off. But along the way, he did what any competent scientist would do: he carefully reviewed the material. Spotting flaws in the design, he corrected them. In trying to make sense of what he had been given, he effectively removed the very sabotage that the plan depended on.

The result was the exact opposite of what had been intended. Instead of undermining the effort, the operation may have handed over a workable, modern nuclear trigger design. The man who later revealed this story to a journalist was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for disclosing classified information. As for the Russian scientist at the center of it all, what ultimately became of him remains unclear.

Portugal used to be one of Europe’s easiest countries to move to. Open migration rules, a relatively low cost of living, safety, and quality of life made it especially attractive for foreign workers, freelancers, and families. That situation has changed, and the latest official data shows this very clearly.

The Bank of Portugal recently published a detailed analysis of migration flows based on records from the national social security system, Segurança Social. The study only counts foreign nationals who are registered and actively contributing, which the bank considers a strong indicator that a person is actually living and working in the country. At the same time, the bank openly states the limits of this data: it does not include children, retirees, people not working, or migrants without legal status. Even with these gaps, the numbers are good enough to reveal the direction Portugal is moving in.

Between 2016 and 2019, immigration into Portugal grew steadily. The trend only stopped with the outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020, when inflows dropped sharply. From early 2021 until mid-2023, immigration accelerated again, driven by post-pandemic recovery, remote work, and Portugal’s still-favorable migration regime. The absolute peak came in May 2023 and again in May 2024, when net migration reached roughly 24,000 to 25,000 people in a single month.

That peak did not last. From the second half of 2024 onward, inflows fell dramatically. Average net arrivals dropped to about 7,000 people per month, compared with around 17,000 per month in the second half of 2023. In 2025, the slowdown continued. Between January and August, around 95,200 foreign nationals registered with social security, which works out to roughly 11,900 per month. One year earlier, the same period saw 147,400 registrations, or about 18,400 per month. In practical terms, immigration fell by almost one third in just one year.

At the same time, the number of foreigners leaving Portugal is rising fast. According to the same social security data analysed by the Bank of Portugal, more than 45,000 foreign nationals exited the system in 2024. That is a 39.6 percent increase compared to 2023. The year before had already seen a sharp rise in departures, meaning exits have now increased for seven years in a row. This is not a one-off correction; it is a sustained trend.

This is where public debate and reality diverge. Portuguese media and political discussions often focus on the idea of “too much immigration.” The data shows something else: Portugal is struggling to keep the foreign workers it already has and is attracting fewer new ones. This matters because the country’s economy increasingly depends on foreign labor, especially skilled employees, independent professionals, and self-employed workers. These groups are essential for maintaining economic growth, filling labor shortages, and compensating for Portugal’s aging population.

The death of 37-year-old U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good - shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis - sparked nationwide outrage and protests. Thousands of rallies, vigils, and demonstrations have been planned across the country in response. Minneapolis has seen thousands of federal immigration agents deployed - more than local law enforcement - and local leaders have even sued the Department of Homeland Security, claiming the operation violates the state’s constitutional powers. Federal judges have had to step in to restrict ICE tactics against peaceful protesters after accusations of arbitrary detentions and excessive force.

Protesters across multiple states are not just marching; they’re openly demanding that ICE be removed from their cities, accusing federal agencies of terrorizing entire communities. The data confirm the paradox: overall immigration is down, emigration during the war is high enough to moderate growth, and yet aliyah from Western countries is rising largely because insecurity and antisemitism abroad are rising, not because confidence in Israel’s internal direction has been restored.

Here the birth figures matter not in volume but in composition. The fastest-growing cohorts are Arab Israelis, where Mohammed has been the most common boys’ name for years, and the ultra-Orthodox Jewish population, whose exceptionally high fertility drives much of the headline increase. Both groups, for very different reasons, are largely anchored in worldviews and education models that resemble the Middle Ages far more than a modern, innovation-driven society. When population growth is concentrated in communities with low labor-force participation, limited STEM integration, and education systems oriented more toward tradition than innovation, high fertility does not offset brain drain, it amplifies it. The country is simultaneously losing globally mobile human capital while expanding segments that, under current political and educational arrangements, do not replace it in function, output, or fiscal contribution. That demographic asymmetry, not raw birth rates, is where the long-term risk actually lies.

This is how a country can add 112,000 people in a single year and still feel thinner, more fragile, and less confident about its future. Man nennt es Vernunft, es ist aber schlicht Bewegungsangst. Der Angestellte, der seit Jahren kündigen will, aber noch dieses eine Projekt „sauber abschließen“ muss, der IT-Spezialist mit global gefragten Fähigkeiten, der pünktlich um 7:30 einloggt, weil man das so macht und weil man vorher sicherheitshalber den Betriebsrat konsultiert. Nicht aus Zwang, sondern aus innerer Disziplinierung.

„Ich habe einen sicheren Job“ ist der deutsche Ersatz für eine Lebensphilosophie. Sicher wovor, bleibt unklar. Vor Entwicklung vermutlich, vor Entscheidung ganz sicher. Im Jahr 2026 ist die Stabilität eine Abhängigkeit mit staatlicher Rückendeckung. Sie wird monatlich ausgezahlt, in Rentenpunkten visualisiert und mit Urlaubsanträgen sediert. Solange heute alles gleich bleibt, wird morgen schon irgendwie funktionieren, heißt es, und diese Annahme wird erstaunlich selten hinterfragt, obwohl sie empirisch immer schlechter funktioniert.

Den eigentlichen Sicherungsmechanismus liefern Schulden. Hypotheken über 3 Jahrzehnte, zerlegt in überschaubare Raten, die genau so hoch sind, dass man sie bezahlen kann, aber nie niedrig genug, um sich frei zu fühlen. Wohneigentum gilt als Reifeprüfung und wirkt zuverlässig als Bewegungshemmnis. Jeder Monatsbetrag ist eine kleine Erinnerung daran, dass Kündigung, Auswanderung oder Neuanfang theoretische Konzepte bleiben sollen.

Im ÖD ist diese Logik besonders effizient. Geistige Abwesenheit bei körperlicher Anwesenheit ist dort kein Makel, sondern ein Karrieremodell. Viele sind innerlich längst ausgestiegen, kommen aber weiterhin pünktlich, weil Sicherheit nicht verlassen, sondern ausgesessen wird. Man spricht viel über mentale Gesundheit, vermeidet aber die naheliegende Diagnose: Das System produziert genau die Menschen, die es braucht – angepasst, konfliktscheu, austauschbar. Wer aussteigt, gilt nicht als konsequent, sondern als irrational.

Die Frage, warum man nicht einfach geht, gilt bereits als Affront. Sie kratzt an der Erzählung, dass man hier alternativlos gut aufgehoben sei. Trotz sinkender Dynamik, trotz institutioneller Erstarrung bleiben die meisten, weil Gehen als Scheitern markiert ist und Bleiben als Reife. Menschen ertragen lieber kalkulierbares Unglück als unkalkulierbare Freiheit. Viele planen ihre Auswanderung seit Jahren und produzieren zuverlässig neue Gründe, sie zu verschieben: Kinder, Steuern, Inflation, Familie, der Kredit. Angst wird dabei gern als Verantwortungsbewusstsein getarnt.

Selbst wer sich tatsächlich zum Gehen entschließt, stößt noch auf die letzte Ironie des Systems. Auch das Auswandern ist paternalistisch gerahmt, bis hin zur rechtlichen Regulierung von Auswanderungsberatung. Hilfe beim Verlassen des Landes ist genehmigungspflichtig, angeblich zum Schutz der Betroffenen.
