WELP, I attempted to install #NetBSD today, but I ran into some serious problems. Namely, after following the instructions on the official website to write the installer image to my USB thumbdrive (which keep changing what the block size should be!), the resulting drive fails to find the kernel and won't go further than the boot prompt. I'm trying some other dd flags and am about to try again, but if this doesn't work SOMEBODY is going to need to step up. Tagging NetBSD Foundation 🚩 (npub1ug0…dw2r) because you're the most obvious person here to ask for help with installing NetBSD

If the docs are still up-to-date, probably the easy thing to help them out with is making the two programs in the CDE application suite that are having problems become functional again: dtcm (Desktop Calendar Manager, has "a variety of problems") and dtmail (Desktop Mail, an email client which needs help with busted SSL support for IMAP and POP servers)

It's not a clipboard issue. Okteta has the right GUI design, but pasting into the hex region will instead paste it into the ASCII region, which is a known limitation. GHex doesn't have this problem but is too GNOME to be a usable program. And nearly everything else is either bitrotted away from neglect or wildly over-engineered.

The history of DEs and GUI toolkits in UNIX/Linux is... weird. Like, CDE was the big player but it was proprietary, so a clone called the K Desktop Environment was made, but it used the (at the time) closed source Qt toolkit, so people responded by making GNOME because freedom freedom freedom

Also XFCE had to be completely rewritten from scratch because it originally used the XForms toolkit, which at the time wasn't FOSS, so it instead had to be redone with GTK in order for distros to support it
