Have you ever seen a headline along the lines of

'Gilt yields show bullish sentiment'

So what's a 'Gilt' and how did the term 'gilt' come to be?

Definition of Gilts -

"Gilts are a type of government bond issued by the UK government. They are essentially loans made by investors to the government, which promises to pay back the borrowed amount along with interest over a specified period."

There are 2 different types of Gilts available to 'investors'

Conventional Gilts: These pay a fixed interest rate (coupon), biannually (every 6 months) until maturity, at which point the principal is returned.

Index-linked Gilts: The interest and principal payments are linked to inflation, meaning they can rise with inflation rates.

The coupons (interest payments) are calculated based on the gilt’s nominal value and its fixed interest rate.

Gilts are marketed to retail and institutional investors with the following 'features'

Safety: Gilts are considered low-risk investments since they are backed by the UK government.

Liquidity: They can be easily bought and sold on the secondary market.

Returns: Investors receive regular interest payments, typically semi-annually, and the return of principal at maturity.

If you were to look at Pros and Cons, these are the points you would consider:

Pros first:

1. Low Risk
Government Backing: Gilts are issued by the UK government, making them one of the safest investment options available.

2. Regular Income
Semi-Annual Payments: Investors receive predictable interest payments twice a year, providing a steady cash flow.

3. Liquidity
Easily Tradable: Gilts can be bought and sold on the secondary market, allowing for flexibility and easy access to funds.

4. Stability

Ok, so now we are up to speed as to what a 'gilt' actually is, let's turn our attention to the term itself.

Many migh think that 'GILT' is an acronym for something and just never thought to ask what or why.

Well, it isn't; it's much more nefarious than that, especially considering the term 'gilt' is still used to define this product.

Origin of the Term "Gilts"

The term "gilts" originates from the historical practice of issuing government bonds that were printed on high-quality paper with a gold lettering or gilded edges. This made the bonds visually distinguished and suggested a level of prestige and safety.

Want to know when this all started?

Well, we have to look back to the formation of the Bank Of England in 1694.

Shortly after its formation, the Bank of England issued the first gilt in 1694. This was part of its initial efforts to stabilise government finances.

Translated - 'to trick the public into buying government debt to build a war chest in order to invade France'

Over the course of the following decades and centuries of war, murder and general psychopathy the practice of gilding the edges of government bonds (gilts) gradually ceased, and by the early 20th century, most gilts were no longer physically gilded, nor even printed on 'High Quality Paper'.

Today’s 'gilts' are primarily electronic and held by a third-party custodian, completely eliminating the physical characteristics that originally defined "gilt-edged" securities.

In short, you own nothing but a claim to some coupon payments that the government promises to pay you, bro.

And we have seen how that can turn out!

As of recent estimates, the UK gilt market is approximately £2 trillion in outstanding debt.

This makes it one of the largest bond markets in the world.

But wait, how on earth can a government pay off all of that debt?

Read on if you want a laugh!

The UK government has several strategies for managing and servicing its gilt debts:

1. Tax Revenue (Translated - Theft)

Income Generation: The government collects taxes (e.g., income tax, corporate tax, VAT) to generate revenue, which is then used to pay interest on gilts and eventually repay the principal.

2. Refinancing (Translated - kicking the can down the road/Ponzi scheme)

Issuing New Debt: The government frequently issues new gilts to pay off maturing ones. This practice is known as "rollover," effectively refinancing existing debt rather than reducing it.

3. Economic Growth (Translated - LOL)

Increased Revenue: If the economy grows, tax revenues may increase, allowing the government to manage debt more effectively and ensure timely interest payments.

4. Monetary Policy (Translated - Economic Fuckery)

Central Bank Support: The Bank of England can influence interest rates and govern monetary policy, potentially making it easier for the government to service its debt.

5. Budget Surpluses (Translated - Mythical term in Gov Land)

In times of economic prosperity, the government may run a budget surplus, which can be used to pay down existing debts.

So, there you have it.

Now you know why they are called 'gilts', even though they are now completely digital, and no gilded edge of any high-quality paper that you could have self-custodied has existed for decades.

I've never understood why people take to the streets to protest. I saw a million people protest the UK's participation in the Iraq War in the early 2000s, and we went to war anyway.

3m people signed a petition to protest against Digital ID in the UK. The government said it will go ahead anyway.

I recently re-read The Cypherpunk Manifesto. These sections stood out:

“If I say something, I want it heard only by those for whom I intend it. If the content of my speech is available to the world, I have no privacy. To encrypt is to indicate the desire for privacy, and to encrypt with weak cryptography is to indicate not too much desire for privacy.”

And

“For privacy to be widespread it must be part of a social contract. People must come and together deploy these systems for the common good. Privacy only extends so far as the cooperation of one's fellows in society.”

Why these passages in particular?

Because months on I am still dumbfounded by a group of very high profile UK Bitcoiners (business owners, authors, old-hands on TradFi stages) who basically said they didn’t give a shit about privacy and were gonna stay on WhatsApp for the sorts of conversations they were having that should be more secure.

I’m SUCH a fresh newbie by comparison, and 100% could still learn a lot from many of them. But on this one thing I will never look at them the same again. Not that they care, nor should they.

And yet if they are trying to increase adoption, then without the strong underpinnings of privacy measured alongside the current abysmal state of the UK - they are just setting their fellow countrymen and countrywomen up to fail and fall right into the governments outstretched and thorn-covered arms.

I'm on holiday at the moment and have time to think about these interactions when they pop into my head. But as 2026 takes root for me on my return I really hope I'll forget all about this because it's serving me no purpose at all. Well, almost no purpose aside from the meme I made and stuck in my Nostr presentation at BitFest. I can still get mileage out of that at my next talk in March 😂

I must admit, I think it would be better to be a bit more quiet about my utter disdain for 'the system' when talking to normies. I actually don't want to draw too much attention to my developing plans. But it's so hard - I want more people to see what so many of us see.

There are two ways to respond to a system you reject. You can fight it, or you can leave it.

Fighting means petitions, protests, elections, reforms. It means working within structures designed by your opponents, playing by rules written to ensure you lose. Generations have tried this. They won battles and lost the war. Every reform became the foundation for the next expansion of control. Every victory was temporary; every defeat was permanent.

Leaving is different. Leaving means building alternatives so complete that the old system becomes irrelevant to those who use them. It means creating facts on the ground that no law can undo and no election can reverse. It means making your exit so quiet that by the time anyone notices, there is nothing left to stop.

We have chosen to leave.

The Discovery

Sometime in the last decade, a threshold was crossed. The tools for genuine exit became real.

Not theoretical. Not "someday when the technology matures." Real, functioning, tested under pressure. A Venezuelan can now store value that his government cannot seize or inflate away. A dissident can publish words that no platform can delete and no state can trace. Two strangers on opposite sides of the Earth can transact without any institution's permission or knowledge. These facts repeat millions of times daily.

The significance of this is easy to miss. For all of human history, exit required physical movement. You could flee one jurisdiction for another, one lord for a different lord, one cage for a slightly larger cage. The territorial monopoly of power seemed as natural as gravity. Where could you go that was not already claimed?

Now there is somewhere to go. A set of protocols rather than a place on a map. A society defined not by borders but by cryptographic keys. A jurisdiction you carry in your pocket, entered by choice and exited at will.

What Changes

When exit becomes possible, the nature of power changes.

A ruler whose subjects cannot leave can afford to be predatory. A ruler whose subjects can vanish into the ether must offer value or be abandoned. Anyone who has moved their savings into sound money, their communication into encrypted channels, their commerce into peer-to-peer networks already knows this. They have already left. The old system simply has not updated its records.

The interesting question is not whether this works. It works. The interesting question is what happens when enough people notice.

Nothing dramatic, most likely. No storming of barricades, no moment of collective uprising. Just a slow bleed of legitimacy as the most productive, most independent, most capable people quietly relocate their lives to systems that do not require their subjugation. The old institutions will continue to exist, issuing proclamations to subjects who are no longer listening, enforcing rules on activities that have moved beyond their reach. They will not fall. They will simply become irrelevant, one person at a time.

The Principles That Emerged

This did not begin with a manifesto. It began with problems to solve and tools to solve them. The principles came later, distilled from what actually worked.

What works is voluntary association. People cooperate when they choose to, defect when they choose to, and bear the consequences of their choices. No authority assigns roles or enforces participation. Reputation emerges from repeated interaction. Trust is earned and verified, not mandated.

What works is individual sovereignty. Each person controls their own keys, their own data, their own identity. No administrator can freeze your account, no committee can vote away your access, no terms of service can change beneath your feet. You own yourself in a way that is mathematically enforced, not legally promised.

What works is building over arguing. The cypherpunks had it right: code beats law. A working alternative accomplishes more than a thousand essays about why alternatives should exist. Too many decades have been spent explaining why freedom matters to people who do not want to hear it. Better to spend that time creating systems that make freedom the default for anyone who chooses to use them.

What does not work is asking permission. Every request for reform is an acknowledgment of authority. Every petition concedes that the petitioned has the right to grant or deny. Those who have left do not concede this. They do not ask. They build, use what they build, and invite others to do the same.

An Open Door

There are no membership requirements here. There is no initiation, no dues, no loyalty oath. There is only a door that is open to anyone who wants to walk through it.

If you are tired of asking permission to live your own life, the door is open. If you want to keep what you earn, say what you think, and associate with whom you choose, the door is open. If you are willing to take responsibility for your own security and your own choices rather than outsourcing them to institutions that do not have your interests at heart, the door is open.

There is no promise of utopia here. Voluntary systems have their own problems, their own failures, their own injustices. What they do not have is the forced participation that makes existing systems inescapable. If something does not work, you can leave it. If someone wrongs you, you can exclude them. If a better alternative emerges, you can adopt it. The freedom to exit is the freedom that makes all other freedoms meaningful.

Some will find this frightening. A world without guaranteed outcomes, without authorities to appeal to, without safety nets woven from other people's labor. The fear is understandable. Most who have left felt it too, before discovering that the safety promised by the old systems was always an illusion, that the guarantees were funded by theft, that the authorities served themselves first and everyone else never.

The fear passes. What replaces it is something better: the quiet confidence of people who have stopped waiting for rescue and started building their own lives.

No Conclusion

There is no conclusion here because the work has no conclusion yet. This is the middle of something, not the end. The parallel society is being built in real time, by countless of people who will never meet, coordinated by nothing more than shared protocols and aligned incentives.

No one knows what it will look like when it is finished. No one needs to know. The beauty of emergent order is that it cannot be designed, only discovered. The direction is clear: away from coercion, toward consent. Away from permission, toward sovereignty. Away from the loud politics of fighting over who controls the cage, toward the quiet work of building lives outside it.

The door is open.
