the thing that has killed me more often than anything else the past 15 years is disk I/O (and that has finally mostly disappeared with the ubiquitous rise of SSDs). Resurrected a 10yo iMac for one of my kids, too slow to even be bearable despite 8GB/quad-core 3.5GHz Intel, had it boot/run from external SSD and now it sails right along.

the worst is when there's clearly something blocking other things from executing and there's no obvious culprit, so annoying.

ok, going to attempt a liveblog of Caltech’s 5th #Quantum Engineering Workshop. If you don’t want to see a bunch of pics of amazing new research and my attempts to understand it textually, then first off what is wrong with you and secondly, might want to mute me for the day. :)

(Also, a caveat: I am not an expert, but I sure am an enthusiast. Any mistakes or confusion of ideas here is strictly on me as I try to articulate ideas that will frequently be beyond my current level of familiarity.)

(Further, I’m going to try to thread this properly; last year I tried to make each new post as a reply to the previous instead of the OP, and ended up with a horrible mess.)

Going to try to get a hike in this next weekend before it gets hot and stays that way; there's at least still green and yellow on our hills (in another month they'll all be brown again)

Want to give another shout out to the Watch Duty crew: I feel so much more empowered and informed than during big fires of previous years, thanks to the work they do on one of the best apps I’ve ever seen.
