I think I know what happened.

Both Chuffed and GoFundMe campaign managers have an option to select both the default amount and the default cadence (one-shot or monthly) of their campaign donation forms.

Most of the campaigns default to one-shot, but there are a few campaigns where the default is "monthly".

LIPSERVANT (npub1hhq…hdrs) it's possible to cancel regular donations from Chuffed - whether you already created an account on the platform or not. Instructions are [here](https://docs.chuffed.org/en/articles/6066113).

If you didn't donate through a registered account, just make sure to use the same email address as the one you used for your donation when you create one, so the scheduled donation can be correctly linked to you.

In general I agree that campaign managers should be honest and make their campaigns' schedule default to "one-shot" - there are so many campaigns in this initiative that if they were all to default to "monthly" a lot of donors may get into financial trouble.

And perhaps we as #GazaVerified should also provide guidelines to campaign managers around this aspect to avoid alienating donors.

But I don't see it as something as extreme to report the campaign to the bank - a lot of campaigns play this trick on Chuffed and GFM, we agree that it's not a transparent practice, but it's not something illegal either.

I think all it takes is a decent virtualization layer. I use GrapheneOS and I can get most if not all of my Android apps to work, all while sandboxing Google Play Services the way I want. If PostmarketOS, Sailfish, UBPorts or anything else could manage to get the same sandboxing model to work in something that resembles Waydroid and it's reasonably efficient and stable, I'd probably be ready to make the jump.

After Madblog, how many of you would like #ActivityPub and #Indieweb support to come to [GPSTracker](https://blog.fabiomanganiello.com/article/gpstracker-a-self-hosted-alternative-to-google-maps-timeline) too?

This is an idea that I've been flirting with for a while.

Like many Millennials, 10-15 years ago I was into the Foursquare-mania. It was the age where pubs would offer discount to their Foursquare mayor and where people used to share their Foursquare stats and compete on how many badges they had collected.

Then Foursquare decided to pivot its platform towards the business-side instead, the check-in app was spun off into Swarm, it gradually lost users but it gained trackers, and by now I think only 1-2 of my contacts (out of >100 in the golden age) still use it.

By now I don't think anyone has filled that gap; there isn't any social media built around networks that share and recommend their check-ins.

#GPSTracker already supports a lot of tracking, timeline and check-in features, synchronization of geo events with mobile devices, and even stats with arbitrary aggregations (by country, time range, city, region etc.). Plus some features that Foursquare never implemented (like searching for checkins on the timeline by simply selecting an area on the map).

#Microformats already support location tags through the [`h-adr` class](https://microformats.org/wiki/h-adr), although they are rarely used. Both #Webmentions and ActivityPub could send check-in activities as permalinks to pages with those tags. And the #OpenStreetMap APIs could do the heavylifting of retrieving POIs in in a certain lat/long box.

The only hurdle would be implementing the protocols under the hood, as both the [Webmentions](https://git.fabiomanganiello.com/webmentions/) and [Pubby](https://git.fabiomanganiello.com/pubby) libraries are in #Python while #GPSTracker is in #Typescript. But it could be a good chance to start writing multi-language bindings for those libraries.

Let me know if it's something that you would use, or even self-host, and if you know if there's anything in the Fediverse that already fills this niche.

adding arbitrary Unicode-high constants (like 0xFE00 and 0xE0100) to text buffers to obfuscate payloads is something that malicious actors have been doing for a long time (on top of tricks like hiding code 10k spaces after the end of a line).

The thing is this is _exactly_ where automated reviews could be useful.

Even a simple grep test to check if your code runs `eval()` should at the very least trigger a warning in npm.

The presence of non-readable Unicode characters in text files (again, something that grep+sed can easily spot) should also be a big red flag.

And they could definitely train a small AI reviewer to identify common patterns (lines with too many spaces, cheap source code obfuscation techniques or execution via `eval()` of stuff that comes from arbitrary externally-controlled buffers). It's not like we've never seen these things in the past 3 decades or so, we'd have plenty of material to train a good model.

Extensions uploaded to Mozilla for example go through a similar pipeline of checks before being approved.

The fact that the npm (and even pip) registries don't run these basic automated checks, and packages are taken down only when shit has already hit the fan, is really disturbing.

And of course I know how frustrating it is to plug a low-power USB-C supply to a Macbook just to realize that it doesn't work, or plug the USB-C cable of a Macbook charger to a small gadget just to realize that it starts overheating after a few seconds.

But I compare that to what we use to have before (a proliferation of barrel connectors of different shapes and sizes that made it impossible for me to charge two laptops from the same manufacturer produced just a couple of years apart by using the same charger, Thunberbolt in a few variants, 3-4 USB connectors types, game consoles coming up with their own proprietary connector shapes, phones that couldn't exchange chargers...), and I think that this regulation has already gone a long way fixing the mess of entangled wires.

Ho anche contribuito la mia parte a mettere a posto l'integrazione ActivityPub di WriteFreely che era un bel po' rotta https://github.com/writefreely/writefreely/pull/1437

Il problema e' che ci sono diverse cose in WriteFreely di cui non sono molto soddisfatto, ed e' anche un progetto con cicli di sviluppo molto lenti e a volte ci vogliono 6-12 mesi per vedermi una PR approvata.

Madblog supporta in modo nativo mentions, risposte, boosts, quotes e ha anche un guestbook per le menzioni dirette al profilo federato che non sono in risposta a un articolo specifico - esempio: https://blog.fabiomanganiello.com/guestbook. E ho anche implementato un sistema di moderazione flessibile basato su regexes e blacklist/whitelist.

Tutta questa roba non e' implementata su WriteFreely (le reazioni a un blog post vanno piu' o meno in /dev/null), il supporto stesso per ActivityPub va meglio nelle nuove versioni ma ha ancora diversi bug qua e la' che non ho avuto tempo di investigare, e probabilmente mi ci sarebbero voluti mesi se non anni di sviluppo a implementare tutte queste feature sul loro codice.

Just bringing up the likely reason why GFM has started to put Gaza fundraisers under scrutiny - a few of those campaigns were hosted on GFM.

In the case of one of the campaigns I'm hosting it took a couple of days for funds to be unlocked after they asked a few questions and verified the identity of the beneficiary.

Of course opening a new campaign on Chuffed can help with getting some much needed funding in the meantime, but if you don't want to lose your funds on GFM it's probably worth to go through the verification process (another risk of not going through the verification process is that any further campaigns opened by the same person may also be flagged).

Back in 2015, when I was in a meeting with a user or stakeholder who said "I'd like feature X to be slightly different", and I realized that it was just a matter of changing 1-2 lines of code, I could just grab my laptop, change a Perl or JS file in a single monorepo that I could easily grep, push it, trigger a pull+reload on our uWSGI server pool through Puppet, and that's it - the feature was usually there within 5 minutes.

When I get the same request today, I know that it involves:

- Browsing through at least 4-5 different services or repos to even realize where the feature is, and how that change could impact a chain of theoretically-loosely-but-actually-tightly-coupled services downstream

- It often requires a round of Sourcegraph or Windsurf AI just to figure out these dependencies

- If the request touches any page or service with compliance requirements, go through a formal compliance request and wait for approval

- Wait 2-8 hours before one, two or three colleagues (depending on the project's policy) review/approve my PR

- If the change is spread across multiple repos, multiply the time above by that number of repos

- Wait 30-180 minutes for all the batteries of tests to run, for all the environments to sync, for Kubernetes to take pods out and into the pool, for Terraform to rebuild the infra, etc.

What was often a 5 minutes round-trip to production before, and could be easily done within a single meeting, now turns easily into 1-2 full days (if everything goes smooth).

Of course, I'm not saying that all the compliance, validation and orchestration layers we've added are bad. Most of them (but perhaps not all) are there for a reason, because we learn from past mistakes, and commit to add intermediate steps to prevent those mistakes in the future.

And I'm not saying that we should all go back to the time of monorepos running on production boxes that we could just SSH into, git pull and reload. I've seen a whole company IT infra fall with a simple push+pull cycle on a Bash or AWK script.

But there must have been a middle ground between the two extremes that we've missed, while only listening to those who believe that problems of process overhead can be only solved by adding more process overhead.

If someone had told me 12 years ago that in 2026 I would spent much more time to deploy even simple changes to a production server, that the complexity and number of moving parts running different frameworks would have been so high that I would have needed an AI assistant to navigate it, and that the machines would have been 10x more powerful but would have spent 10x the time to ship changes, I don't think that I would have felt very positive about my future.

There are [1191 W3C specifications and recommendations](https://www.w3.org/TR/) out there right now (actually a bit less than the time when that article was written in 2020).

That’s about ~110M words.

Put togeter the C11, C++17, UEFI, USB 3.2, and POSIX specifications, [all 9580 published RFCs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_RFCs), and the combined word counts of the [10 longest novels](https://www.britannica.com/topic/Massive-Tomes-10-of-the-Worlds-Longest-Novels), and you still won’t reach that many words.

Even building a fully POSIX-compliant operating system is by now 1-2 orders of magnitude less demanding than building a fully W3C-compliant #browser.

In my case it can be fully self-hosted, but in reality I synchronize most of my listening history with last.fm and then periodically scrape the API - for the simple reason that most of the music apps out there have built-in scrobbling integration through last.fm.

Your posts however boosted my idea of having a fully federated and open last.fm alternative, probably also compatible with the same API so it works almost out of the box with most of the players out there that support last.fm.

Any music activity can then become an unlisted post on your federated "music profile", also tagging the original artist if they're on the Fediverse.

libre.fm has been around for a while as an open scrobbling alternative, but it seems pretty much dead nowadays and I'm not sure if they ever considered full ActivityPub compatibility 🙂

[_Tools for Conviviality_](https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/tools-for-conviviality-2) by Ivan Illich is an essay that anyone who wants to better understand economic and societal trends in tech should probably read.

Written in 1972, it analyzes technological revolutions such as the sewing machine and the car, but it's surprising how the same patterns can also be applied to the era of late-capitalist tech enshittification.

The car is taken as the perfect example of early enshittification cycle.

Its introduction was welcome as a revolution for mobility and personal liberty. It allowed people to travel farther and get more done in a day.

Yet, as its production became standardized and in the hands of a few producers, while its penetration of the market increased, its marginal utility diminished - the industry started to offer fewer benefits and take more in exchange.

What was initially hailed as a _personal freedom_ (you _can_ take the car if your workplace is far, you _can_ take it if you want to go shopping) became an imperative - especially in places like North America. At some point the _can_ became a _must_. The industry started lobbying for more infrastructure to be built to accommodate a new car-centric world where people _must_ use the new technology if they want to go anywhere. And that infrastructure was paid by taxpayers money - including those who didn't use a car, and had to rely on underfunded public transport while subsidizing others' personal luxury. And those who owned a car had to pay subscription costs to the industry in the form of fuel and maintenance (and, nowadays, even actual direct subscription costs).

There's an "industrialization" phase in the development of disruptive technology that flips the purpose of a product on its head - from building tools to serve society, to reshape societies to serve the tool. At that point adoption is no longer optional, and those who don't embrace the product of industrialization face exclusion (the concept of _radical monopoly_).

Most of the technological developments since the textile revolution can be mapped in a precise framework: a net lift, followed by a push to extract value, and finally an insistence upon the technology's ubiquity.

Illich's solution to the _industrial tool_ (the "_convivial tool_") is remarkably similar to the "small tech" that many of us are building or hosting nowadays.

Convivial tools are defined as sustainable small-scale local-first solutions, designed primarily to enhance the autonomy and creativity of their users.

Bluesky has actually been more hostile towards Palestinian accounts even than other mainstream platforms (like Facebook and Instagram) that I expected to be more hostile.

If you still want to have some presence on Bluesky you can try and bridge your Mastodon account through this: https://fed.brid.gy/login. It basically creates a bridge account, and everything you post here will also be posted on that account, so people can still follow you there. But there's no guarantee that they won't shut down your bridged account too.

Increasingly often, you get a .pkpass file, which is supposed to be opened in wallet apps (like Google Wallet or any 3rd-party wallet app).

Since I don't like to share information about the events I attend with strangers on the Internet, I have decided to take a closer look at these .pkpass files.

They are just zip files that contain a background image, an icon and a pass.json with the actual information about the ticket. Nothing that can't be handled by a script rather than a 3rd-party 100 MB mobile app.

I have thus put together a simple #shell script that does exactly that.

In 1957 the average cost of a single-family home in America was about 2.2 times the average annual wage. Today it’s more than 10 times the average wage.

When the Boomer generation was the same age as today’s Millennials, it owned about 22% of the nation’s wealth; Millennials today control about 4% of the country’s wealth (and it’s the same for Zoomers).

From the 1930s (after FDR amended the ultra-liberal excesses that led to the 1929 crisis) right up until the Reagan Revolution, it was possible for seniors to live comfortably on Social Security alone; Reagan undid that with his “reforms” so today that’s nearly impossible.

In the early 1970s, a comprehensive health insurance used to cost about $35/month per employee, and in most of the States hospitals and health insurance companies were required to be run as non-profits.

Today, health insurance can be as much as 20% of a company’s payroll expense, and the idea of running the health service as a non-profit is by many seen as an abomination that never belonged to America.

When Reagan came into office, a single wage earner could support a family with a middle-class lifestyle, and fully 65% of Americans were in the middle class (up from around 20% in the 1930s).

Today, after 44 years of cynical Reaganomics, it takes two full-time people to achieve the same status, which triggers huge childcare expenses, which is part of why only 43% of Americans are middle class.

No wonder then that:

- A majority of voters under 40 want a democratic socialist to win the White House in the next presidential election.

- 51% of likely US Voters ages 18 to 39 would like to see a democratic socialist candidate win the 2028 presidential election (36% don’t want a democratic socialist to win in 2028, and 17% are not sure).

- Among the youngest cohort (ages 18-24) of voters, 57% want a democratic socialist to win the next presidential election.

- Among those who voted for Kamala Harris in last year’s presidential election, 78% would like to see a democratic socialist candidate win the 2028 presidential election.

And there's another demographic anomaly: as generations grow older they usually turn more conservative.

At some point they end up accumulating enough wealth, and their priority gradually shifts from their right to be given fair opportunities to gain wealth to their right of defending their wealth from any perceived external challenger.

Older Millennials are nowadays well in their 40s, and yet they don't show many signs of turning more conservative like their parents did.

And that's simply because the wealth from the previous generation never had a chance to trickle down to them.

No wonder that nowadays they're more scared of the unhinged excesses of the nefarious Friedman-Reagan-Thatcher economic school than by the idea of a socialist in the White House.

If it's just the campaign link that changes (as in the previous campaign is no longer in use) then it's ok to simply change the link in your profile note. The archive will switch and fetch donations from the new link automatically.

If however you want to keep both the campaigns because the second campaign is for a different purpose (your daughter) then it makes sense to have 2 accounts with 2 campaigns. We've already followed the same procedure in other cases.

I'm in contact with the GFM staff right now because of Khaled's campaign, which also received similar scrutiny lately.

So far the questions that they asked were just one inch deeper than standard KYC verifications, and I know what folks in risk management usually want to hear, so hopefully I'm left only with one question before getting them off the hook and unblocking the funds.

But yes, it looks like it's a synchronized action that is targeting several GFM campaigns in Gaza.

Some tips for our friends in Gaza: always keep a recent post with pictures of e.g. groceries, tents or medicines that you bought and mention a "thanks to your donations" with a link to the fundraiser.

One of the most commonly asked question is "how does the beneficiary make use of the funds?", and providing such a post as a proof should usually suffice - if you go into something more detailed (like covering moving or tuition fees) they're likely to ask even more questions about e.g. the transport company or contacts at the school/university to prove enrollment. With groceries it's much easier to prove the use-case without further questions.

But IMHO this is shameful on GFM. All the times I donated to Ukraine they never blinked an eye. They never dared to ask me "is your money going to the Nazis of the Azov battallion?". On the opposite, they set up fast processes to onboard fundraisers for Ukraine. I think that new campaigns should probably avoid it entirely.

If anyone gets their funds frozen on GFM and questions from their staff feel free to reach out to me, I'm happy to help.

My two cents:

1. Google is a morally bankrupt entity. If it refuses to let Palestinians even create an account, then we should tell our friends to ignore it. They can create a mailbox on Proton or Tuta, just to mention two less hostile services. I run some mail servers myself and I can also host mailboxes for them, if no other alternatives are viable.

2. GFM is being a complete disappointment. Chuffed is still a slightly better option, but given their very lax security I wouldn't feel like recommending them (they leak so much data about donors to anyone who knows how to poke their GraphQL APIs). Thank you for suggesting LiberaPay, I think that we should try and nudge new accounts to create their campaigns there. And crypto can also be an option for those who are tech-savvy enough. This is the chance for our cryptobro friends (or not-so-friends) to redeem themselves from the image of cynical cocaine-high planet-eating speculators and use their skills to help our friends in Gaza set up crypto wallets to receive donations, without intermediaries that can cut those flows overnight, and prove that crypto can actually be used in the real world to bypass restrictions rather than being just a tool in pump-and-dump schemes.

3. Bluesky must rot in hell. I thought that it would just go after accounts that spam a lot for donations, but it's actually actively and repeatedly banning anyone who registers with an IP from Gaza. Such obstinacy is beyond deplorable and they must be called accountable by history. But hey, we Westerns are not getting banned there. So those with an account there (or on any other major social media platform that bans Palestinians) should probably post about gaza-verified and the stories of these people. The Fediverse is showing a big heart but it's still a small pond compared to those platforms, and the donor fatigue issue here is real.

4. As Israel is taking up more and more pieces of the former Palnet telecom infrastructure, bringing ever tightening surveillance even closer to our friends, and as platforms start restricting Palestinians on the basis of their IPs, we should also start urging our friends to start using VPNs more. A Mullvad account is $5/month. It's not that far fetched to think of a campaign to cover that cost for anyone in Gaza who wants more safety online, and purchase bulk Mullvad accounts for them. And since they're here on the Fediverse we could also poke Mullvad VPN (npub1xh7…v9hj) directly and ask them if they could be so kind to create 100 or so VPN accounts for Gaza 🙂

More support is needed to provide tents for all the kids and their families (Mai's initiative takes care of 20 kids, many of whom are orphans, and recently a family with 6 children has also joined the camp).

Tents are expensive in Gaza, and in order to buy those two tents Mai had to use all of her funds.

If we all play our part we can probably provide a dozen of kids in Gaza with the best Christmas gift.

In the land of the self-made men, wealth is often naively associated to ingenuity - ignoring all the overwhelming evidence pointing to the fact that just because someone is rich it doesn't mean that they're smart.

The naive and shallow-liberal American mythology that interwines wealth with genius and merit has repeatedly put in the top positions of government and business some of the least thoughtful, least competent and lease self-aware people that the country could offer.

What the American mythology of wealth and genius often ignores is that talent exists everywhere - but opportunity doesn't.

It's privilege, not genius, that insulates foolish people from the consequences of their foolish decisions.

And yet the ultra-wealthy managed again and again to take the helm, and every single time they did, with no exceptions, it's the country as a whole (and anyone foolish enough to rely on the US as a stable partner) that paid the price of their imbecility and wickedness:

- Southern plantation oligarchs in the 1850s eventually tried to build a trans-continental authoritarian slave empire, launched a war against democracy itself, and nearly a million people died as a result.

- The oil and railway barons of the Gilded Age ended up hurting the economy as a whole and the purchasing power of Americans as a whole, and the situation only improved once Congress pushed for some of the bravest antitrust laws of the 20th century.

- The worship of wealth and financial recklessness of the Roaring Twenties, and of the earlier traders, led to the 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression that followed - and that could only be fixed by FDR's Keynesian and interventionist policies that restored the purchasing power of common citizens.

- The infamous 1971 "Powell Memo" turned almost overnight a niche economic view like the Chicago school into the only dominant economic doctrine without any form of academic validation. It ushered corporate control over education, media, public opinion, infrastructure planning, healthcare and the political system itself, it gradually forced an increasing number of Americans out of healthcare, education, housing and professional opportunities, and it culminated with the 2008-2009 financial crisis (where, again, common Americans paid the bills).

- The worship of wealth has led to two Trump terms, and all the Nazi bullshit that has come out of it.

Invariably, every single time the ultra-wealthy take the helm, America veers off the road.

And that's no surprise: extreme wealth isolates people from reality.

Studies on the wealthy show declining empathy, reduced capacity to recognize others’ emotions, and a dangerous overconfidence in their own intuition. Research on CEOs finds that around 20 percent exhibit psychopathic traits — lack of empathy, superficial charm, impulsivity — compared to about one percent of the public. These aren’t qualities that make for wise leadership.

Once wealth reaches a certain scale it becomes indistinguishable from hoarding disorder.

Billionaires don’t just accumulate money: they stockpile influence, lawmakers, media platforms, even entire political movements. They withdraw from the common good, then blame the rest of us for the social and infrastructure instability their own excesses have created.

The truth is that America has always been at its strongest when it remembers that great nations are built by great communities, not great fortunes.

When it measures character by contribution, not by bank balance. When it demands guardrails, boundaries, and democratic accountability for everyone, especially those with the most power to do the most harm.

The morbidly rich won’t police themselves. They never have.

At some point, hopefully, Americans will dismantle their mythology of wealth, and they'll stop repeating the same mistakes every two generations.

Until then, decoupling from this rogue actor fanatically attached to a rotten, fundamentalist and abhorrent idea of how to run a country or an economic system should be a civic duty.

That AOSP is already being dismantled? That was widely reported on tech outlets and I've been naive to share it without verifying myself. That's been amended.

Everything else in the original post was quite factual.

I mentioned a few names as possible alternatives, well aware of the tradeoffs, and well aware that GrapheneOS currently provides the best deal (and even saying that explicitly).

And I said that in the long term I'd rather have a 100% FOSS solution both on the hardware and software side.

Oh, and that relying on Google's goodwill is a liability (but that applies also to LineageOS and /e/, not only to you).

Does anything in these statements justify 30 messages shouting "misinformation"?

If you're triggered by anything that can be perceived as bad PR because you've been harassed in the past then I'm very sorry. But be aware that not everyone who brings up legitimate questions and opinions is in bad faith, and not everyone is aware of how entities who operate in this space may stab each other's backs.

Lastly, I stand by my stance that using Linux-based systems doesn't mean being subject to Google's whims. For a simple reason. Google may be a major contributor to the kernel and the ecosystem around it, but it's not the only one. And it's not the one who has the last say (even if it's definitely a big stakeholder). Linus first and the Linux Foundation as a whole second have the last say. It's not perfect, but it's a different case from a private company technically accountable only to its management and its shareholders which has already been going on an erratic path for a while. That's what I mean as liability. Thanks for clarifying - this detail wasn't actually reported by most of the tech outlets.

But I expressed my concern that this will keep being the case.

We're basically relying on the good faith of Google in releasing for free to everyone, and not only to commercial partners, the source code that they mostly develop in house - which I wouldn't take so much for granted.

Just like Graphene must rely on Google's goodwill in keeping the AOSP open, it must also rely on its goodwill not to lock up the Pixel bootloaders in the next iterations. This is a liability.

Partnering together with e.g. Fairphone, Purism or Jolla for example could help. Sure, they aren't perfect, but your deep knowledge of the Android ecosystem and the best hardening practices could provide invaluable insights on how to build 100% (hardware and software) FOSS devices whose bootloaders won't be suddenly permanently locked tomorrow.

If instead most of your online activities focus on showing how much better your solution is compared to what everyone else provides, and how each other single hardware and OS manufacturer sucks, then these strategic partnerships are harder to forge.

But we should also acknowledge that there are multiple dimensions to take into account when considering Google Android alternatives.

Some folks don't want the full spyware package, but they are ok to accept the microG trade-offs if they come with the comfort of using some apps that rely on the Play Services. /e/, Iode or LineageOS could then be viable options.

Other folks don't want to have anything to do with anything touched by Google, and want to have a stack as similar as possible to their Linux desktop. And maybe also easy root access. For those folks UBPorts, PMOS or Sailfish can be ok, even if of course it means less security.

Other folks want everything in their device to be FOSS. And for those, at the current state, an AOSP-based solution that doesn't close up anything it builds on top of it is a better option than Sailfish (but hey you've also got PMOS that is actually open).

Of course if you want something that is simultaneously 100% FOSS, de-Googled, secure and always up-to-date with the latest patches you go for Graphene. But there's a whole spectrum of alternatives that it shouldn't be ignored just because it accepts one trade-off or another.

Sorry, I used "make it harder" instead of "discouraging". But the message is similar. Stuff like LineageOS actively provides guides on how to flash rootkit. GrapheneOS discourages it and offers no support to users who do it. People usually choose one or the other according to their needs. If I want a device where I can run my Termux scripts as root I probably would opt for Lineage, not Graphene, even if it's technically possible on Graphene. And, of course, I take full responsibility of running custom scripts as root on my device. No need for anyone to remind me that it's very insecure if it's a trade-off I may accept (and no need to criticize those who accept those trade-offs).

All in all, I love and I fully support what you're building. But your aggressive interactions alienate people - and I don't think I'm the only one here.

Most of your posts fall along the lines of "look how much better/open/secure/purist what we build is compared to X, Y and Z - and whatever everyone else builds is awful". And of course I acknowledge that your points are 100% valid most of the times, but they ignore that different people who choose de-Googled products may have different reasons and may accept different trade-offs, and they also ignore some of your own liabilities (like your reliance on Google's goodwill both for AOSP and Pixels). This isn't the kind of constructive behaviour that empowers communities.

I took just a quick glance at it a while ago and it didn't seem like it added much on top of LineageOS (just some pre-installed applications like F-Droid and Aurora).

And it also suffers from the same issues of LineageOS when it comes to things that percolate to Google's servers (like microG connections and connections to Google's SUPL server for efficient location retrieval), but I guess that GrapheneOS (npub1kwa…e0nj) is currently the only AOSP-based alternative that fully addresses those issues. But of course different users lie at different spots on the anti-Google spectrum, so for someone who is fine to use microG to get Google Play payments to work without tears, and they're fine if it means a few connections to Google's servers, it can be an option.

My main concern however is that from what I see the development team that works on it isn't very big, and I'm not sure if security updates get (or will get for a foreseable future) released at the same cadence as upstream LineageOS.

I have a mixed feeling about /e/OS.

I know that the developers are doing an amazing job and they're also genuinely good people. But they still build a solution that is basically a thin layer on top of AOSP, which is now being disassembled piece by piece.

In the best case scenario they'll end up with an OS that they can't control because the development is done in-house by Google. In the worst case they'll end up with an OS that can't even be used on any device except the Fairphone and maybe Librem.

I asked their head of engineering in 2022 why they chose to use AOSP as a base rather than building a true Linux-based alternative and maybe support the efforts of folks like PMOS and Sailfish, and he said more or less "because AOSP is FOSS regardless of what Google wants to do". Curious to know if they still have the same view now...

Earlier this year #Google already took bold steps in [moving the development of several AOSP components behind closed doors](https://9to5google.com/2025/03/26/google-android-aosp-developement-private/), removing the open-source foundations of the project one component at the time.

Options to unlock bootloaders on Android devices are also narrowing down. [Xiaomi removed the ability to unlock the bootloader entirely in MIUI in August](https://droidwin.com/xiaomi-might-no-longer-allow-bootloader-unlocking-on-miui/) (after months spent making it ridiculously difficult), [same for OnePlus](https://droidwin.com/now-oneplus-restricts-bootloader-unlocking/), [Samsung did so in July](https://xdaforums.com/t/bootloader-unlocking-option-removed-from-one-ui-8-0.4751904/), and probably Google devices will soon follow suit.

And let's not mention the nightmare of the [Play Integrity API](https://developer.android.com/google/play/integrity) that forces all Android developers to register through the Play Store and use Google's signing keys, even if they don't intend to distribute their apps through it.

Sure, officially Google has [taken a step back](https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2025/11/android-developer-verification-early.html?m=1) and has pledged to provide a way for developers and power-users to bypass those restrictions. But we can all expect it to be a cumbersome and change-prone process filled with ridiculous amounts of frictions at every step - and I wouldn't even expect such a morally bankrupt company to keep maintaining this "sideloading" option.

Google once competed with Apple for customers. But in a world where Google walks away from the biggest antitrust trial since 1998 with yet another slap on the wrist, competition is dead, and Google is taking notes from Apple about what they can legally get away with. And the EU, the biggest opposer of its anti-competitive acts, is also becoming softer with Big Tech - both because Vestager has left the job, and because being soft with trillion-dollar monopolist tech titans is seen as a sign of being "technologically competitive".

Your best bet is to purchase a Pixel 9a _now_, before more manufacturers decide to block bootloaders, and immediately flash it with #GrapheneOS.

The long term plan would instead be to throw all of our efforts and energies on Linux phones. The folks at GrapheneOS are doing an amazing job and fighting against all kind of pressures, but at some point we should probably all just acknowledge that anything that is tainted with Android, or runs on a device intended only to run Android, is a liability, and we should no longer build solutions on top of hardware and software that we can no longer trust.

Sailfish, PostmarketOS, UBPorts, MeeGo or whatever comes next must succeed. No matter the cost.

Reason 2: usually the delivery of aid in a war-torn zone is responsibility of the UN and humanitarian NGOs. This is instead a quite exceptional case where traditional humanitarian actions are banned or severely limited, and the aggressor is also in charge of the aid (which would be as absurd as Russia demanding its right to be the only supplier of goods and aid for Ukraine).

The UN, MSF, Emergency, Amnesty International or the Red Cross have no interest in making profits. But private ventures led only by US-Israeli actors of course do. Creating scarcity of things that people can't live without is then a very profitable strategy because it pushes prices up - and if they sell you mostly expensive stuff with already high margins they see it as even free cash for them.

A quick heads up to our wonderful #GazaVerified donors: I have been receiving many calls from our friends in Gaza in the past few days that donations are slowing down and they often don't see a single donation for a 5-7 days.

While I understand that the requests for support can be quite overwhelming (especially now that we have almost 90 registered accounts, and not many regular donors), I also believe that maybe we can solve this all together.

When I look at how much is being collectively donated I actually don't see that amount going down. The same goes for the avergage daily per-campaign amount.

But that amount isn't fairly distributed throughout all the campaigns.

As I speak, the mean daily value raised by a campaign is around $80. Which would actually be quite helpful to cover many of a family's necessities (it's $560/week).

But as I speak only 13 campaigns are at or above that mean value.

The remaining 75 are all below - and _way_ below in some cases, the tail of the histogram is very long.

With 50 campaigns right now below the $200/week threshold, and 25 collecting less than $100, of course many of our friends are right to say that they are not getting enough support.

I know that it's hard to try and sustain so many people in desperate need, I know that adding more campaigns over the past few days has probably made some donors feel more overwhelmed. And of course it's entirely up to you to decide who you donate to.

But when I look at the numbers, I see the potential for us to give most of our friends a good $500/week baseline to go through this hardship. All together we're already donating more than $3000/day: that's wonderful, and that's a great show of humanity and the power of mutual aid grassroot campaigns!

Maybe we just need to try and distribute that amount more fairly. Or more and more of our friends in need may start feeling left behind.

The #fundraising [campaign tracker for gaza-verified](https://archive.gaza.onl/campaigns/accounts) has just been released.

The campaign tracker periodically scrapes donation data for the verified accounts from their official GoFundMe and Chuffed campaigns and provides a unified view over the amount raised by each campaign.

The default view is on the funds raised in the past week, but the date range can be easily customized from the date selectors - and flexible sorting is also supported.

The accounts that have raised the least amount in the past week will automatically be shown at the top, so donation efforts can focus on those who need them the most - not on those who reach out to donors more often.

Note that all donor names have been hidden.

The campaign data is also available over [REST API](https://archive.gaza.onl/swagger/#/campaigns/get_accounts_campaigns_api_v1_campaigns_accounts_get).

Also keep in mind that this may not give the full picture of the campaign, as some people from #Gaza also receive donations on non-public channels (PayPal, crypto etc.).

no worries for that - as long as the campaign link is either on the profile note or fields, and it's on Chuffed or GFM, I am already able to parse it, and it's actually already on the archive db.

There are just a couple of accounts that didn't post their donation link in either, but maybe in some posts, but those can probably just be nudged to use the profile fields/note too.
