A moment to celebrate my mother-in-law, who passed away this morning after an eight year battle with Alzheimer’s and a major stroke.

A pediatric nursing instructor for decades, it’s hard to estimate all the good she did for children both directly and indirectly.

She was absolutely the greatest, and I will miss her.

This Gray-headed Swamphen was elusive at first, just giving us glimpses through the marsh grass. Eventually, it decided we were cool and walked into a more open area where my wife captured some images. This was at Orlando Wetlands in Florida last month. #birds #birding

2025-03-11T11:14:12Z

This Townsend's Warbler appeared at a suet feeder in Charlotte, NC in late February and has been reliably visiting ever since. My wife and I went to see it on Saturday.

Normally, this species winters along the west coast of the U.S. and in Mexico and Central America. So it generates quite a bit of excitement when it appears in North Carolina.

This Mourning Warbler was singing prolifically in a narrow patch of dune vegetation in Carteret County, NC on June 2 2014. I couldn't see the bird at first and initially misidentified the song as Kentucky Warbler. I quickly realized my error when the bird finally flew past my head. ("Idiot. Stop telling people I'm a Kentucky Warbler." LOL.)

For a while in August 2011, this juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk made our bird bath its base of operations. This was at our previous home in central NC.

We moved in late 2020 and did have some Red-shouldered Hawks that very loudly ruled over our current neighborhood. Unfortunately, they abruptly vanished this past winter. I have no idea what happened.
