Paul says that OBEDIENCE...LEADS TO...RIGHTEOUSNESS.

This word "righteousness" is dikaiosynen. It is the same word used several times in Romans 4 when Paul talks about how Abraham was justified by his faith, that it was credited to him as righteousness (dikaiosynen). The word means righteousness or justification.

It might seem a bit unclear at first what Paul means here in Romans 6:16 when he says that obedience leads to righteousness. Is he saying that obedience results in righteousness in the sense that it results in justification? Is he saying that what we do in obedience somehow leads to our being justified???

Well this word righteousness/justification seems to be quite flexible and can take on different meanings depending on the context. It can be used to talk about righteous living - the righteousness God wants to see in our lives. Or it can be used to talk about being justified - in right standing with God.

But which one does Paul have in mind in Romans 6:16?

Well, many Protestants will not entertain the possibility that Paul is saying that our obedience leads to righteousness in the sense that it leads to our justification. Because, in contrast to the explicit teaching of James, they hold that justification is by faith alone apart from any obedience. And so this may be why the New Living Translation awkwardly translates this part of Romans 6:16 in this way: "You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living."

But is Paul really saying that obedience leads to righteous living? Does that make sense? Obedience IS righteous living... So it would be rather redundant for Paul to tell us that obedience (righteous living) leads to righteous living (obedience). Obedience leads to obedience???

I guess you could force this interpretation and say it means that obedience leads to MORE righteous living, or something like that. But it feels contrived.

Additionally, consider what Paul contrasts this with earlier in the verse. He says "...sin, WHICH LEADS TO DEATH, or obedience, which leads to righteousness."

Paul's point earlier in the verse is that sin leads to DEATH, not that sin leads to sinful living, or even WORSE sinful living. And by "death" Paul is obviously not talking about mere physical death. He's not saying that if we continue to sin, it will lead to our physical death, at which point we will be ushered into the presence of Jesus and welcomed into Paradise. No, if we continue sinning, leading to death, you can be sure the result will not be eternal life and blessing.

Therefore, when Paul says that obedience leads to righteousness, he must mean that obedience leads to righteousness in the sense that it leads to LIFE, that is, salvation, a right standing with God, a right relationship to God, JUSTIFICATION.

Paul is saying that obedience is how we remain in a right relationship to God, and how we are finally justified in the end. We may be justified initially without having done much of anything (we just came to faith, so of course we haven't done much in obedience yet). But we do not REMAIN in a state of justification without doing anything. No, we need to obey in order to stay in a saving connection to Jesus.

Or as James put it, "a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone."

I appreciate NT Wright's clarifying translation of Romans 6:16: "Don’t you know that if you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you really are slaves of the one you obey, whether that happens to be sin, which leads to death, OR OBEDIENCE, WHICH LEADS TO *FINAL VINDICATION*?"

Perhaps Wright is taking some license there in how he translates that. But he's trying to bring out something the original Greek readers would have understood from the context. And it certainly fits the teaching of the Lord who said that only those who do the will of his Father will enter the kingdom at the judgment (final vindication), and that "by your words you will be JUSTIFIED, and by your words you will be condemned."

Yes, friends. Paul seems to be telling us that we will be justified by our obedience. Not that we will earn something from God. Don't misunderstand please. God will never be obligated to anyone, and he will never owe us a thing. But he HAS laid down some conditions which we need to meet in order to remain in this unearnable relationship with him, and in order to finally receive the eternal gift he wants us all to have. None of us are entitled to it. But he will only give it to those who walk in faithfulness to the end.

So then, let's lay aside the things that distract us and slow us down, and let's go all out for the Lord Jesus Christ in love and in thanksgiving and in the fear of God.

Also a reasonable explanation. I think it's likely that both are correct. Fornication is unchastity between single persons and also irrelevant to the discussion of law because it is punishable by death under the Law of Moses.

It's also possible that the Romans weren't allowing the Jews to carry out capital punishment so they were choosing to end the betrothal with "divorce" instead of death.

There's another view that says fornication is an example that demonstrates that is okay to call off an engagement for any reason before the wedding.

According to man's school of thought, Eternal security, also known as "once saved, always saved", is the belief that from the moment anyone becomes a Christian, they will be saved from hell, and will not lose salvation.

But according to the Bible, someone that was once saved can still fall into sin, die in their sins and go to hell!

Let's analyse some examples:

Judas was once saved! One cannot fall away from a place he has never been. So, accepting this falling away as truth, the conclusion is that one can be saved and then "fall away" or lose his salvation. How can a fallen man fall again if he was never saved at first? Acts 1:25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
Judas Iscariot was standing in the Lord, and a follower of Christ before he fell into transgression.

The book of 1 Cor. 5 was written to believers who have fallen into fornication.

"It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife."

Paul wouldn't have preached to those that are not saved yet in this manner.

The Seven churches in Revelation were saved believers before most of them fell. The Bible recorded their good works. The remedy for them was repentance. Mind you these happened AFTER PENTECOST. The church at Ephesus backslided and left its first love. God out of his infinite mercy, sent a message of warning to them. Can you then say that these Church are not truly saved at first? Then read Revelation 2:1-5 and see their stand before they fell.

Revelation 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

David once fell into sin, Saul once fell into sin, Solomon once fell into sin, Ananias and Sapphire once fell into sin, lucifer once fell into sin! The lists are endless. These people were saved but along the lines, they fell into sin. Some have the grace to repent and utilized it while others wasted it, some don't have the grace to repent.

Those that say these people were not truly saved at first should bring evidence from the Bible and not self assumption. You don't assume the Bible, you believe it!

If once saved forever saved is true, why did the apostles write to believers that they should not commit sin and warned them to flee from fornication? Bible talked about repentance in various chapters. Eternal salvation is for those who always obey God. Once you disobey God, you will lose it just like King Saul in the Bible. The only way to reclaim it is through repentance.

There's some very disturbing teachings that are going around today in the apostate churches!

This claim that we can just believe in Christ and His finished work and it's just an intellectual belief, it's not a sin hating, modifying our wicked behavior to actually fit what all the epistles teach, just a believe and you don't have to turn away from your pornography to be forgiven. You can continue to lust after people that were made in God's image and you are covered!

Just believe in Jesus and you don't have to stop fornicating, just believe in what Jesus Christ did and you can continue to dress like a harlot and have filthy communication, you can continue as a rebel and there's no shame, guilt and condemnation, it's now overlooked and God is ok with it. You can continue to act like the rest of the world and be excepted by God now because you have this intellectual belief!

Folks this is one of the highest degrees of blasphemy to the shed blood of Jesus I've ever heard, what mockery, what hatred toward Jesus
Christs work at the cross.

These people that believe this and teach this have some very wicked and dark hearts towards God's laws, statues and commandments! This is some serious hatred toward people in general to teach this! Some try to use this verse to justify divorce and remarriage. At best, the verse makes no comment on divorce over fornication. An interpretation assuming permission for divorce and remarriage is inconsistent with the rest of Scripture.

The Law of Moses required death for the offenders who committed fornication. The Pharisees are asking Jesus a question of law, "is it lawful?" so Jesus answers precisely. The Pharisees very well knew the penalty for "sexual immorality" of any kind was death, so there was no need to discuss divorce for these cases. The "exception" here is not an exception to allow divorce or remarriage, but rather an exclusion from the discussion; it is an all-inclusive clause to include every non-capital reason one might want to divorce.

We know God disallowed divorce for sexual offenses in the Law of Moses because the penalty was death, not divorce. Then Jesus came along and banned divorce for all non-sexual offenses. Between the two, divorce was prohibited for each and every cause.

The account in Mark 10 without any exception is a separate occurrence when the disciples are asking Jesus privately on the matter with no reference to the Law of Moses and no need to distinguish one case from another.

The linked article agrees with the "one judgement" view, citing "the judgment" and "the day of judgment", but it doesn't address what is meant by the passage that seems to say there's a first judgment associated with a first resurrection. (He's mostly making a point against "once saved, always saved" (OSAS) doctrine.)

The verses seem to say that there are some who will be resurrected first, and that these will have "reigned with Christ a thousand years". Who are these people? Seems it at least includes martyrs (and/or unclear which) those who did not worship the beast and did not take his mark. Does this include all the just persons or only the specific named subset? Or is this describing something different? What is the 1000 years during which "the rest of the dead lived not again"? Why is it the "first resurrection" if there isn't a second?

My tentative understanding is that all will be judged and the outcome is final at the natural death of each person. Those who will be judged righteous will be resurrected 1000 years before those who will be judged unrighteous. "The judgment" would refer collectively to these distinct judgements described in Revelation 20. John 5 seems consistent with 2 resurrections, but doesn't describe 1000 years in between. I'd be very interested in other views of Revelation 20:4-6.

It is, indeed, a well-rounded article, but it's lacking in addressing the main question. Only a few New Testament verses are given in claimed support of using violence in self defense or defense of others by Christians.

Luke 11:21-22: "When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armor wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils."
The context is
Luke 11:15: "But some of them said, He casts out the demons by Beelzebul the chief of the demons."
Jesus is pointing out the absurdity of devils casting out demons. In the example, Jesus is the stronger man who overcomes the armed man. Doesn't seem to say anything about violent self defense by Christians.

Luke 22:36-38: "Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough."
This command seems to be solely to fulfill a specific prophecy and was given only to the disciples, not the multitudes; 2 swords were sufficient to fulfill the prophecy.

John 2:15: "And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;"
Doesn't seem to say anything about deadly force, nor does it say Jesus hit anyone with this non-lethal instrument. None of the commentaries on biblehub thought it a deadly weapon:
'This whip was made as an emblem of authority, and also for the purpose of driving from the temple the cattle which had been brought there for sale. There is no evidence that he used any violence to the men engaged in that unhallowed traffic. The original word implies that these "cords" were made of twisted "rushes" or "reeds" - probably the ancient material for making ropes.'
'Moreover there was no material which inflicted less lasting hurt on the body than this. Nor is it said, that He inflicted a single blow upon the men: He accomplished His purpose by the terror [which He inspired].'
'The "scourge," as Godet says, is a symbol, not an instrument. It was in Christ's hands a conspicuous method of expressing his indignation, and augmenting the force of his command, by an indication that he meant to be obeyed there and then.'

1 Timothy 5:8: "But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel."
This talks about providing for needs and says nothing about using violence to defend one's family.

The bit about the word translated "sword" in Luke vs a different word used for "sword" in Revelation was interesting:
'The word “sword” used by Jesus is μάχαιρα, máchaira. It means, “A knife, slaughter–knife, a sword for cutting…”1 and “a short sword or dagger.”2 And, “relatively short sword (or even dagger) used for cutting and stabbing—‘sword, dagger.’3'
'The word for sword there is ῥομφαία, rhomphaía. It means, “A broadsword used especially by the Thracians and carried on the right shoulder.”4'

It seems the final word was given when Jesus disarmed Peter:
Matthew 26:52: "Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword."
This is perfectly in line with "love your enemies" in Matthew 5:44.
Tertullian understood Jesus disarming Peter to also be disarming all Christians. (He also thought by the same logic that Christians couldn't join the military even during peace time.)
Tertullian in Of Idolatry, Chapter 19:
"But how will a Christian man war, nay, how will he serve even in peace, without a sword, which the Lord has taken away? For albeit soldiers had come unto John, and had received the formula of their rule; albeit, likewise, a centurion had believed; still the Lord afterward, in disarming Peter, unbelted every soldier. No dress is lawful among us, if assigned to any unlawful action."

If you are unable (for some medical reason) to not have normal sex with your spouse, you should pursue another means to satisfy your spouse if possible. Your attitude of trying to please your spouse makes a difference. You may need counseling or medical help.
This is NOT a woman only issue ladies. I know of men who did not give their wives enough sex and they ended up in divorce and or cheating. Some men have Erectile Dysfunction , low testosterone, low libido, low sex drive. This can sometimes be due to side effects of medication or illness.
Ladies, I see many comments where there are complaints of no action for months or years. That is a problem. How many times have you tried to initiate sex? What are you doing ladies to correct the problem? Are you actively involved or lazy / PASSIVE when it comes to sex? Are you part of the solution or part of the problem?
Men and women, IF your focus is on you and not on pleasing your spouse, you have a sex problem. Examples of self centered problem - I am not interested, I am too tired, I do not feel like it, I have a headache. Do you see a pattern here? The selfish focus is me, me, me, me.
True love has a focus on the other :How can I please you? I am interested in what works for you? I want to rock your world! What can I do to improve our love making with you so you achieve orgasim? This is a focus on the other partner and their pleasure and satisfaction.
YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCE OR THE WAY YOU WERE RAISED HAS A BIG IMPACT. Some ladies were told by their parents NOT to let a man touch your body area that is covered by underwear. Touching these areas is sinful, wrong, dirty, and evil. But this is only true for dating or pre marriage. Touching private areas is foreplay. Foreplay can lead to intercourse for the unmarried which is the sin of fornication. Fornication will send you to hell and could result in an unplanned pregnancy with a bastard child. Once you are married, your body belongs to your spouse (and theirs belongs to you). For a married couple, intimate touching is normal and a natural part of foreplay. It is NOT sinful for married couples to have intimate touching. Yet some women have the idea that sexual touching is still sinful, wrong, dirty, and evil with their husbands. This is so wrong. Both the male and female body was designed by God to be INTENDED FOR PLEASURE in marriage. That is why Father God made us with nerve endings and arousal responses to stimulus (touching).
NOTE
Not everyone, but for some people, all they need is to cuddle, to be hugged, to have their back or feet massaged, their face stroked, their hands held or kissing. This is not sexual intercourse but that is all they need to be satisfied in a very few cases (male or female).But for those who need an orgazim , this will not satisfy them and if you think it will, you are only fooling yourself.
