i agree with most of the arguments, but nevertheless those who resist the progress will be rendered obsolete. Too many examples in the history. Skilled programmers can be x10 more skilled with new tools if they adjust their mind to the new tool. We’ll see how this plays out. Personally I’m benefiting from it - things that took me months to complete now take days/hours. And I’m talking both for programming and legal work.

I’m experimenting today with inline image rendering in #nomadnet micron pages. This is entirely rendered in the terminal. I personally think this is a very good feature to add to micron. In fact it doesn’t use special tag, just adds attributes to the file link tag. In the background it uses the decades old #Sixel protocol to render the image in the terminal. Most of the modern terminals support it. I personally don’t want #reticulum to look like 80s so images in nomadnet is a must.

ok one thing, which I’ve apparently missed - LoRa config is located in the general config file tdeck_config.py, but now, with Launcher integration, the only way to edit it, is to copy ot locally on your computer with mpremote, edit the settings and upload it back to deck. In the next version, I’ll have this settings exposed in the UI. I’ve made at least 10 meshtastic solar nodes with nrf52 Xiao, total cost goes to around 20 euro/node including battery, solar panel and the 3d print. These nodes are working 1+ year happily. If we can flash stable reticulum nodes on it, it would be a game changer.

to be fair to Mark, he said he’s giving the protocol as freeware (with military restrictions) so anyone can do anything with it, including forking. So if the community picks it up and start reimplementing/improving he might even join that community fork (my interpretation) if the fork is improving and adopting rapidly. Not everyone agrees with me, but I think putting Rnode repeaters on solar powered microcontrollers is the key to mass adoption.

In general anyone can add ‘protocol layer’ on top of reticulum by attaching a packet named scope. I for example was thinking of experimenting with specific telemetry packets, like Meahtastic has.

The above images are taken with hardware jpeg compression 640x480 with quality 90 (the highest), transcoded to WEBP with quality 8 (out of 100) to handle small sizes. There are quite a few parameters which I implemented and can be tweaked on the fly with keywords sent to the camera over #LXMF. I need to take the camera out (currently behind a window) and tune up the day exposure somehow to reduce the image burn.

Yesterday was quite productive day for #reticulum esp32s3-cam module. I’ve implemented minimal webp encoder to match the standard for images in MeshChat(X)/Sideband/Columba. This made possible sending average(to low) quality 640x480 images in the range of < 16kb - perfect for LoRa only. Since the board has a LED, I’ve implemented a flash and night mode (bigger exposure + fish). It’s not ideal since the led is not very bright.

Behold! 😁The first standalone #reticulum LoRa camera, running micropython reticulum. I made a custom pcb which I’ll share separately. After TCP only interface tests were successful, I decided to use seeed’s wio sx1262 for lora interface. This lora board was already working fine with xiao esp32s3 and shouldn’t have problems with esp32s3-cam board. As it turned out I was right,. I now need to bindle this with solar panel, bms and at least two 18650 batteries. Esp32s3 is a power hungry board.

Whoa success! I managed to send audible voice msg from t-deck #reticulum to MeshChat. Three days struggle 😭 The culprit was the tight loop of screen refreshing, keyboard poll, LoRa poll and i2s mic capture. It turns out esp32 core was skipping bytes from the mic which caused the codec to encode partial voice, causing inaudible msg. I gave preference to i2s bus and now the msgs are good enough and go over LoRa to meshchat successfully. Now i have voice and image transport on t-deck!

I can’t test/fix properly unless I reduce the dbm of tree nodes and simulate network and not going up and down the roof all the time; 2. When I’ve put up #reticulum nodes out in the wild and the (LoRa part) network grows, some problems start to surface, mainly due to hardware constrains. It turns out nrf52840 based nodes are good for battery efficiency, but the insufficient flash, is kind of bummer. The problem was
1. routing is saved on the flash - 1 file per heard node. However LittleFS works with 4kb per block, which means we are wasting precious space as most of the block is empty. So the free 76kb is exhausted really fast

Going beyond the home lab, today i put up 2 more #reticulum transport nodes with modified #microreticulum firmwares (responding with battery % on msg). I managed to get messages through from about 7km away with 3 hops over LoRa and 1 TCP interface. Obviously the ultimate goal is to send an image at that distance, I but need to fix some bugs on the t-deck firmware because it failed me.

I fixed the bug! As a result of the efforts 3 major #reticulum micropython improvements:

1. Added IFAC support - now node can join password protected interfaces

2. Implemented the cryptography modules in C with #micropython bindings with fallback to native module The result on this is mind blowing: complete decode chain reduced from 3 sec to 75 ms!

3. Camera works! You can select quality and resolution of the image. I’m still to test over LoRa but on TCP receipt it’s almost instant.

Whoa #reticulum #micropython #camera ! It’s working! Currently testing TCP interface only. Also a bug i need to go around - if MeshChat tries to initiate Link, the confirmation packet from esp32 doesn’t get the confirmation, so MeshChat keeps retrying. However if I send opportunistic msg, esp32 initiates the Link and the image gets sent successfully. Good progress anyway 🥳🎉

it’s a coverage issue and would be valid for all three - meshtastic, meshcore and reticulum. Think about putting repeater solar node between you and your nearest mesh neighbor. I do the same thing- I throw a disposable small one in the wild and it works great.

cool! it was working with LoRa when I tested it. I must have broken something while implementing the other features. Nice addition about the deepsleep and the folloup tests! Definitely the way forward for solar nodes. Do you want to make a PR for the improvements?

great! I’m thinking of defining a special scope rntranaport.telemetry which is actually allowed as per reticulum specs. The receiving side however need to be able to decode it too. I think Sideband has something similar. I’ll have more time to tinker and improve in couple weeks. If you have ideas PRs are welcome 😄

good choice! As you said, they are cheap enough not to bother with the others. I got one working since yesterday with sds011 and bme280 sensors, serving a nomad page with the (almost) live data. Current uptime: 14h 8m 41s, so looking good 😊 Yesterday I’ve uploaded the latest changes to the repo btw (driver for sds011).

honestly, buying a board with more ram would be the easiest solution. There’s a c++ microeticulum firmware but it’s not complete. If they complete it, you should be able to use it on more memory constrained boards.

just replied to you in the repo, but you just need board with more ram. Micropython itself consumes more than half of the your board’s ram. I could try to cross-compile the drivers into the firmware, which potentially could reduce ram consumption.

Just added particle sensor sds011 to the #micropython #reticulum firmware. On the image below you can see a #nomadnet page showing both bme280 and sds011 readings. I need a custom PCB to get rid of these jumper wires 😁 The lxmf node example can also return the value of the sensors, when it receives keyword “sensor”.
