My early career involved adapting signal processing algorithms found in textbooks and research literature to new applications. A mix of your points 2 and 3 above, reworking existing ideas and invention of novel ones to a certain degree.<br/><br/>Then Matlab made huge investments in boilerplating every possible algorithm in the field and turning them into Toolboxes. And now any programmer with a minimal background in the theory and development could larp as an engineer.<br/><br/>The results were as expected. Great waste and retardation. Managers dabbling in tools they didn&#39;t understand but could now generate impressive plots to peers. Huge amounts of wasted time and projects that went nowhere, small companies (and large) going under because they couldn&#39;t afford the wasted time they didn&#39;t realize was a waste in the moment.<br/><br/>But it all shook out in the end for better or for worse for individuals and companies and organizations.
