Yesterday, AI really surprised me.

On my desktop, the "simplex-chat" console client starts together with Sway. I use it to send files and notes back and forth between my devices. Obviously, there are a thousand and one ways to do this, but since I’ve had a SimpleX Chat server running on adre.su for ages, there’s no reason not to use it. So I do.

But the "simplex-chat" console client is an example of the most atrocious CLI/TUI application I have ever seen. Seriously, in 30 years I don’t think I’ve come across anything more miserable.

So I quickly threw together a script that works externally and is specifically meant for sending files or text. The problem was that I’d forgotten how extremely particular SimpleX Chat is about who gets to access its database. Every time my script sent a file, the SimpleX Chat console client would stop receiving messages. The different SimpleX Chat instances were basically fighting each other over the subscription.

Naturally, I turned to AI, already fully expecting the damn thing to write me an alternative SimpleX Chat client 😅

But AI pleasantly surprised me. It simply threw together a tiny script that finds SimpleX Chat inside tmux and, using a keyboard simulator, just types the necessary commands directly into it.

It’s so ridiculously simple that it’s genius 🤭
