Bit of a history dive on the local community theatre I'm now chair of. It was built in 1887 as part of the Institute Movement in South Australia: setting up libraries, reading rooms and halls for public gatherings and education. The government encouraged it: by 1900 there were 196 Institutes, peaking at 306 in 1930.

In the 70s, public libraries as we know them here spread, and in 1989 the last Institute closed. This switch to govt infrastructure matches the Zeitgeist, I feel. The Institute (since 1909 owned by the local council) became a theatre in 1968, became run down by 2004 when the operator dissolved, and was sold off to a college (with significant covenants, including $150k of repairs and installation of air conditioning) in 2006.

Places like this only thrive when there's a community around them: and generally people find it gives them far more than it takes. I think growing that has to be my aim as chair. After we fix the plumbing!
