Great question... My take... I'm learning so it is always better to do your own research... The lightning network is a layer 2, built on top of the Bitcoin protocol, or the base layer. When you run your own lightning network node, you can open a channel with another node, making an on-chain transaction. Then you push the SATs from your node to other nodes to make payments or the other around, when accepting payments. It is possible to settle transactions and bring back the sats on chain by closing a channel.
I still have to investigate how the unified addresses work. There might have some custodial services as well to go back and forth from lightning to on-chain.
I'm sure all of it is explained on plan.network I have to check it out myself
