The project initiators establish specific milestones, denoting the timeline and funding requirements of the project, they also define members of boards and threshold of each board to vote for the release of coins back to the investors. Each investor wishing to participate locks their Bitcoin in to a smart contract based on those parameters plus their own key. These smart contracts are programmed to release the funds to the project once the date of a corresponding milestone is achieved, or when sufficient number of members in one of the boards achieve the threshold votes required that will trigger the release of the funds back to the investors.
