I sympathise - the instrumentalism of student's experience was a shift that was very apparent across my 25 years of university teaching....
When you say your 'generation nearly all went'... only recently has the proportion of age cohorts reached 50%, if you went when it was 'free' it was likely more like 10-20% at most, hardly 'all' (apologies for the pedantry)
