> 1943: The Budd RB Conestoga made its first flight in Philadelphia, Penn., piloted by Guy Miller. The RB-1 Conestoga was a twin-engine, stainless steel cargo aircraft designed for the U.S. Navy during World War II by the Budd Company of Philadelphia. Although it did not see service in a combat theater, it pioneered design innovations in American cargo aircraft, later incorporated in modern military cargo airlifters. The initial order was for 200 aircraft that was later reduced to 17. The final aircraft was delivered in March 1944, and the fleet of Conestogas was retired from Navy service in early 1945.
