Călin Georgescu, one of Romania’s presidential candidates, was detained today for questioning over allegations of money laundering and falsifying financial information related to his election campaign. According to Romanian newspapers, a large sum of money was found in residences and offices linked to Georgescu.
He came in first place in the first round of Romania’s presidential elections, but the vote was annulled, and new elections were scheduled after the Romanian Constitutional Court uncovered fraudulent ties between Georgescu and Russia.
According to the accusations, although Georgescu claimed he had not spent money on his campaign, millions of dollars from Russia allegedly financed his candidacy. The Constitutional Court also accuses Russia of influencing the first round of voting.
