Uneris 饕餮姐姐 (npub1zf4…3zta) ren (npub1vdd…tkfq) Emily Wilson's is alright, her vocabulary bores me and she loses some of the essence of the thing, making it feel oddly quaint. Caroline Alexander's Iliad is the best imo. It has a lot less awkward syntax than older translations and sings beautifully, and has a much more vivid and rich vocabulary than Emily Wilson's. As for the Odyssey I have Fitzgeralds and liked it more than Wilson's, although it has some of the pretense that you describe. It feels a bit grimey and I'm not sure if that's just the personality of The Odyssey or if it's because of Fitzgerald himself. I just hope Caroline Alexander will translate it as well eventually. For prose I think Hammond's translation is great. I hear Lattimore's is standard in Academia, and most translations ultimately run down-stream of his, but it has unnecessarily stilted syntax that has been improved a lot since then (Which says a lot because I have incredible patience for retarded syntax). I'd like to read Peter Green's some day since it sticks close to the dactylic hexameter but is much cleaner than Lattimore's, but I have already spent too much money on these two poems lmao
