Sounds like Metro Trains Melbourne has just had their contract extended for a further 18 months, beyond May 2026.
About a year ago they got an 18 month extension from Nov 2024 (covering the start of operations for the Metro tunnel).
Little detail yet - one key issue for passengers is infrequent services on many lines outside peak times. That's up to the State Government to fund.
