But despite the increased difficulty, they did it and they did it boldly in everyone's face and got away with it.

Its not about giving up without trying, but more about the question of whether or not voting can be considered "trying". It seems to me that the problem to be addressed is the rigging. Whether someone votes or not doesn't appear to change this.
