Taiwan grows plenty of rice. Rice farmers get all sorts of subsidies to keep prices stable. Taiwan is surprisingly fertile, it's very capable in producing it's own food despite reliance on food imports on paper.

We have a typhoon coming in tomorrow, those reservoirs will be filled up. There were some drought scares a few years ago, but seems to have subsided. It was nice to have a few summers without direct typhoon hits.
