So interesting! Thanks for sharing. 🥰 El Corconero is an inspiring name and story. Haha. I have been the lucky man with the most fish a number of times, using this technique. Actually, if I needed food/protein/EPA&DHA desperately (we all do lol), I would always deploy this technique as it is so fruitful.

So the pencil float basically just sits there at the surface of the water, and when you get a good bite, it shoots under the water, then all you do is lift the pole and fight the fish if you hook it.

Mullet are definitely one of the fish you can catch here using this technique. Auntie SWIM and I actually adore eating mullet. They tend to only want to eat dough or bread, on small hooks.

Most white fellas where I'm from do not eat mullet. Black fellas don't either. They don't even care. They might use them for crab or shark bait or something. However, there are always smart Vietnamese groups/families targeting them all through winter especially here. Often in the middle of the city, they will find them wherever they are!

The Greeks here will use this technique, but not for a peasant's mullet. They chase garfish (they call them Sargana, a name I love.) Only difference is the bait—they use little "glass fish" which are tiny translucent bait fish that Sargana love.

The pole itself you just hold like any rod, the larger ones are just a little differently cumbersome. 🥰
