As for BoF, I've heard horror stories about V. Is it really worth playing? Also, does the rest of the series innovate at all with the combat?
Also, about FF being revolutionary, I think that's what makes the series so special for the genre. From 1 through 6 the games did new things which were not fully explored. The same could be said for the SaGa series. Other companies didn't follow suit and take note of mechanics like FF's active time battles or SaGa's replacing EXP and levelling with incremental stat advancement. In fact, SaGa is the only RPG series that has consistently blown me away (between Romancing 1 and Frontier 1) as an RPG, and it's hard for me to enjoy a more traditional RPG.
