At the edge of the town, there was a swimming pool. Most knew it to be a pool, but to Jeremiah, it was a serene spot to study. He was engrossed in the history of wars, of men who fought bravely and of places far away. Jeremiah had always been the kind to lose himself in his thoughts, sometimes to his own detriment.

On this particular day, the sun was overhead, its rays shimmering off the water’s surface. To any other, the blue reflection would have been obvious. But Jeremiah saw only the pages of his book and the chance to escape into another world.

He set his wooden desk on the water, as if it were a solid ground. In his mind, he was in a quiet study room, walls lined with books, the scent of old leather and paper filling the air. The coolness under his feet felt like the marbled floor of the library he so loved. The quiet splashes were the rustling of pages.

But as he sank deeper into the pool, the weight of his clothes pulling him down, reality began to creep in. The pages of his book became wet and blurred. The silence was replaced by a muffled world, and his breaths became desperate.
