I would like to say I'm surprised at how people choose sides in these conflicts, but I'm not. The extreme black and white monotone vision is insane. Where is the understanding and nuance? One good way to gain understanding is to put yourself in someone's shoes. Make it personal (temporarily.)

If your tribe or people has been oppressed for generations, would I want to fight back? If a group of terrorists came into my country and killed unarmed citizens in their beds, would I want to fight back? Yes and yes. Who can blame either side for any reasonable reaction?

Both sides have issues and long-running histories where both sides have wronged and been greatly wronged by the other. Since that is the case, how can anything be solved?

The only way to fix a long-standing feud is for both to fully commit in the short term to be merciful and non-retaliatory. How can that be done when there is always some person or group within that wants to fight and kill and who always rejects peace?

The only way to win in the short term is for the majority of both sides to publicly commit to peace *and* to work together against the inevitable violent participants in their ranks. Peace without action is pointless. Someone has to punch the angry cousin in the mouth to shut him up so the rest of the family can get on with peace.

Frankly, I've lived long enough to see this over and over. It's very unlikely to happen. Ever. Yet my taxes are being used to fund both sides. What a waste.
