Fed to cut rates twice this year, starting Sept; but one or none still a risk: Reuters poll

A majority of forecasters in a Reuters poll predict that the U.S. Federal Reserve will cut its key interest rate in September and once more this year. However, there is a significant risk that they may opt for only one or no rate cuts at all. Economists have consistently predicted two cuts, unlike the markets which were previously pricing in one cut in November. Fed officials have indicated that they are not in a hurry to cut the policy rate, and some economists believe that the Fed's latest projection will show two or fewer rate cuts for this year. Around 60% of participants in the poll predict two quarter-point cuts this year, while a minority of economists see only one rate cut or none at all. Inflation measures are expected to remain below 2% until at least 2026, and the unemployment rate is predicted to remain around 3.9% until 2027. The U.S. economy is forecasted to grow at a rate of 2.4% this year, faster than the non-inflationary growth rate of 1.8%.
