The first English settlement in America was Jamestown Virginia. (1607).
Between then and 1776 there were 169 years of taxes, levies, regulations, land rents, and general all around oppression from England.
Not that there wasn't push back, but the build up to a revolution that actually effects change can take a lot longer than any of us think it should.
