Once you know this, realize you have three tactics for influencing the direction the protocol will take:
1) Establishment: Find the biggest, most-powerful army, join it, and try to influence its decisions.
2) Start-up or spin-off: Build a counter-army and attempt to get past the flagpole first, by quickly building implementations.
3) Experimenter: Focus on occupying a space nobody has taken much interest in and tinker around alone.
