It all depends on perspectives and beliefs. They are arthropods - so same group as spiders and insects. Many are filter feeders so you could argue they feed from the detritus of the sea (possibly why your uncle has this view). Biologically there’s an argument that we eat only “vegetation grazers” too. My view: we eat to survive. Everything is game but should be balanced seasonally with availability. Both meat and plant based.
