I'm a dermatology PA and see this in patients who have their hands in water frequently.
For prevention in the future I'd recommend Invisible Glove to protect the skin barrier.
If they're already cracked, Aquaphor or Neutrogena Norwegian formula hand cream. If they're moderately dry, CeraVe moisturizing *cream* or Eucerin Advanced Repair moisturizing *cream*.
I'd tell you to wear gloves when you're gardening but I don't listen to my own advice on that one.
